Beauty Light with Speedlights | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Sometimes what you really want is a flash that’s small in size and light in weight and that sounds exactly like a Speedlight. A perfect example of this is beauty lighting which traditionally makes use of a boom arm to extend the light above your camera. But if you’ve ever tried to do this with a large studio flash you’ll know all that extra power means a whole lot of extra weight.
In this video photographer, Gavin Hoey uses two Flashpoint Speedlights and a lightweight Glow softbox to create three looks that all make use of beauty lighting in different ways.
Gavin starts with the classic beauty light combo of an elevated flash with a reflector below. He then adds some simple styling to the scene and ends with a one-light beauty light look.

Really nice pictures, but hey, with a model like Chloe it is hard to get it wrong :) It is nice to se that two speedlights and a small softbox will get you a long way. You mentioned that a downside using speedlights, is the lack of a modelling lamp. I do believe the V1 (X) has that feature, at least the Canon version has that.

Hi Marts. Both the Flashpoint speedlights also have modelling lights but on the rectangular one the softbox blocks it and on round head the LED is no match for the video lights!

Fun, informative video Gavin. Question: I'm a beginner who has only done natural light portraits. I have used a reflector, but don't yet have a proper flash. I want to get something that I can use outside for things like HS senior photos, before prom photos, children portraits. Do I need to go with something more powerful than a speedlight for outside? So far, I was looking at two units, the Godox V860 and the AD200 as possible choices. My camera is a Fujifilm X-T3. I am not looking to do this professionally at this point. Only shooting for friends who ask. Thanks for any thoughts you might have....

The eye-detect feature of modern mirrorless cameras is the only reason I'm considering changing my camera (well of course I mean buying another camera). Getting eyes in critical focus, especially with a wide-open portrait Prime, is the hardest part of Portrait photography. Just when you think you got the perfect photo.... you check focus..and you know the rest.

Gavin, I am new to digital photography and have learned a lot with your videos although starting to gather the equipment for flash photography to start applying your lessons. Also enjoy the energy and enthusiasm you put on each video. Chloe also enhances the portraits with the posing and beauty of course. I notice that you use a 12 to 40 mm lens, contrary to what I have read that for portraits medium telephoto lenses are better suited. What can you comment on that?

12-40mm on my micro 4/3 camera is a 24-80mm equivalent in full frame (35mm) and I'm generally around the 40mm end (80mm). That said I'll use wide lens and telephoto lenses if that's what I think works. My advice Jacinto... stop reading and start playing ;)

Gavin you always make the best videos!! I have a question you might like to address in a future video. I am trying to do full length portraits with white curtain background and white floor. I nearly have it right but not quite. I have a white backdrop and then sheers. A Godox 200 either side between the two. A Godox 200 in a big black umbrella at the front and a reflector at my tripod. My problem is I still get light drop off down the dress and I don't want that. So how can I get the beauty light on her face but keep everything light and bright. I hope this makes sense.
