It is now Jan 2022 - My batteris do not run out. I motovlog and use external Anker brick batteries. I have recorded a trip from CA to Texas on one battery and one SD card with the camera runing constant. Of course I used loopiing and the gopro on one battery ran for 18.5 hours and still had a charge when I reached my desitnation. Long bike ride!

What will happen if say I set the looping mode to 5minutes and the shot that I want is a 30 second clips that starts on the 4mins 55seconds mark? Since it will overwrite the previous file, am i left with only the first 25seconds of the new clip?

I've never used the Looping feature and I'm not sure I understand it either. I think, though, that when you press the shutter as it's recording (assuming it's set to 5 minutes) that you will essentially be saving only the last 5 minutes of video leading up to you pressing the shutter again. Hopefully someone who knows better will correct or confirm this. =)

I know this is a long time after you asked this question, but the answers is yes. That's the one downside to looping video. If you have a 5 minute interval, and the cool awesome thing starts happening at 4:27 and lasts 2 minutes long, You'll lose the first 33 seconds of that clip and only the remainder of it that was recorded on the new 5 minute interval. You can avoid this but only at a pretty inconvenient process. You'd had to recognize that a cool thing was about to happen, or happening, stop the recording, and start it again. Youd lose a few seconds of the beginning, but better than cutting it out in the middle. Again, it isnt very practical. Best way to avoid this it to use a longer interval. I wish they had a 10 minute interval, because the jump from 5 to 20 minutes is quite large. Bottom line is yes. If the cool thing happens at the end of an interval, you will lose the beginning of it. Best ways to avoid it 1) use a longer interval, 2) get lucky and hope nothing cool happens in perfectly timed segments haha. Good luck! ps. In my own experiences, I use this while biking to work and just for leisure. I use the 5 minute loop and so far, I've caught 2 car accidents in about 15 months and a bunch of funny moments or encounters with animals, passengers, or my own wipe outs. The looping-end has yet to happen right when something video-worthy happened. Knock on wood!

3 years later.. i've tested this on my GoPro3 Black edition. Contrary to what has been said here.. you will NOT lose your clip if it starts @4:55 mark. My gorpro created 5 x 1 minute "indexed" recording files on 5 minute loops mode. Whenever you hit stop recording button, it'll save that most recent "indexed" files plus the others to fulfill your 5 minute recording. I'm definitely going to use this mode now... why'd it take me so long to realize :)

I put it on looping mode, stop recording after I have caught a fish, i caught 5 fish, shouldn't I only have 5 sections that recorded plus the last one. I end up with 60 or 70 sections. I took it off looping and just recorded all day long thinking I would have only 1 section, again, 60 or 70. What am I dong wrong?

@adorama - Hero 4 Black - I have it set for 5 min loop and it captures something I like. I press the shutter "Record button" to save the recording and then press the shutter button again to start the 5 min looping process?
