Whilst the fight isn't 100% realistic (it was unusual for duels where neither party wore armor to last even 20 seconds) the stances and the techniques used are still real, and they are using the swords competently. This proves that only a little exaggeration can get you really far.

One thing I really enjoy about this fight in particular is the subtle fact that both fighters know they could die. In most media, sword fights are typically conducted with both parties having no fear. In this, they frequently retreat, hesitate, or halt altogether when the situation becomes a gamble. Even when one is thrown onto the ground, the other is hesitant to rush in not because it's a bad idea, but because they fear death. Also, this film does a good job of showing how not all duels have to be fatal.

@@lucianlihaciu1916 not exactly. Depends on the people and situation. People dont go down easily with one stab or strike unless its fatal. Most duels tend to be first blood duels. A wound would easily get infected and you would be likely to die after a duel if not treated soon. Also there are no rules when engaging another person. You can use your hands and feet as weapons. Also the reason they shove eachother down is to get the enemy off balance and get them on the ground.

Just wanna throw in some appreciation for the stunt quality in this fight. These guys are doing throws, falls, and rolls on a stone floor, and going at it with those swords like they actually want to hit each other, instead of just clang their blades. That shot where the guy gets the head cut looks quite real, and like it would have been dangerous to do even as choreography. You can see the belligerant fencer with the long hair start out enraged and reckless, then quickly see the rage dissolve into fear as he realises he's not dominating the fight. His opponent remains calm and measured throughout. Likewise the reckless fencer quickly exhausts himself while his opponent controls his energy. Finally, the more skilled fighter wins in hand-to-hand combat and ends up holding his reckless opponent at longpoint, but he's so assured of his superior skill that he tosses his enemy his weapon again, just to quickly disarm and defeat him again while sparing his life.

I don´t think so: I would argue that doing the ankward stuff actors and stuntmen do in actual films IS the same or even MORE complex than this. And you know, smart camera working and practical effects can make a dairly bad ejecution look very good. Best 1v1 fight scene I've seen in years. I love how this whole scene, with absolutely no dialogue, hints at an utterly epic story just out of camera shot. Perhaps the gray-haired man, his dueling days coming to a close, desperately wants one last fight to regain what honour he has left or go out fighting. Or perhaps his opponent wronged him somehow, and this is the climax of a story of political and social intrigue. Who knows? Make of it what you will.

Don't blame Hollywood. It is just a place where various people gather to make movies. Since various people work there, various things can happen in movies. It's not like there is this one boss at Hollywood who controls and dictates films. Hell, there are many filmmakers that strive to have their films be realistic. What you CAN blame are the filmmakers who use this ideology. Blaming studios can also be acceptable as they have can have authority over a movie.

brandon zhang I was referring to filmmakers other than ones working on swordplay (Drama or other genres and/or methods in conveying a genre such as bare-handed fights). My point was that you shouldn't blame filmmakers altogether nor should you blame a place that just helps provide resources for various filmmakers to make movies. Also, many filmmakers do not care for accuracy in terms of fight choreography. Reasons can vary such as that sometimes they want to express their imagination with their choteography, wanting to tell the story a certain way, or that they just want the fight scene to advance the story. Also, choreographing a fight scene is not easy. While I have no qualms pointing out innacuracies and/or problems, it does irritate me when people get all condescending and scoff at the hard work the filmmakers put into, such as them "bullshit". It's one thing to point out mistakes but to be mean about it? I honestly don't blame filmmakers not wanting to cooperate with these people.

Real stuff does not really support such prolonged fights, unless both fighters got superhuman reflexes, kinetic vision and exactly same level of fitness/skills. It's no Hollywood that despises helmets. Hell, Hollywood can't despise anything as it is just a place where various people gather. What can despise the helmets are the filmmakers working on the project.

@cadethumann8605 7 жыл бұрын
Croz Raven Actually, they are not. There are no rules that forbid you from doing anything in your story as Hollywood is just a place of gathering. Granted, it is true that filmmakers tend to prefer their protagonists to be helmetless as to show the characters' emotions. Just don't go blaming a place that has nothing to do with the issue other than helping filmmaking.

Croz Raven I'm sorry. I just couldn't tell if you were mocking Hollywood or just being playful. It just sometimes get annoyed when people treat a place like crap for having weird film decisions. It also irritates me when people disregard the many good things that came from Hollywood (good movies, many dreams coming true, gave people jobs, lots of profits made, etc.).

Wild, intense, violent, dynamic, and overall beautiful. This was much better than the sword fights you get to see in the movies. I loved it. Especially the part where he throws the sword back to his opponent. Keep it up!

Love the palm strikes there, they don't risk injury to your knuckles, have a greater stunning effect, and allow for a quicker transition from striking to grappling/wrestling. And yes I can just hear it now when the average MMA nut job fan reads this he or she will be like "If palm strikes are so effective then why are they not used in MMA?". Then I would reply "take the gloves off that protect your fragile knuckles and lets see what happens". Early UFC all over again with career ending hand injuries. And honestly I've done both, and it seems like the two really have about the same amount of power and the only difference is not the quantity of power but rather the way the power is transferred into the target. Punches concentrate their force onto the knuckles, a much smaller surface area so the energy is transferred in a more penetrating fashion. With palm strikes the energy is transferred width wise which is how it creates a bigger stunning effect. Also obviously since the hand is already open its easier to transition from striking to wrestling/grappling.

I fucking hate it when people go with the "waaa if it's so effective, why MMA doesn't use it". People think that a fight for your life plays out like a UFC match. That's the appex of not having a clue how self defense works...

Yeah, but they'd mix source material to the point, where these guys wouldn't even meet, and one of them would've been long dead before this even happens, but then he resurrects god knows where, something, something happens, they try to build a moral story behind those characters, but then forget they were trying, and then you won't even see them for two more seasons.

+Jester814 We've already seen badass characters clear a room with a longsword before in the show. They needed to emphasise the point that Arthur Dayne was a brilliant swordsman to non-HEMA enthusiast audiences with the time and resources they had. Why can't people just use common sense and realise this instead of resorting to being a triggered keyboard warrior?

I don't know where all these HEMA elitists came from, but suddenly you're somehow smarter because you know about half-swording. Directors aren't the biggest problem here. It's money and time. Remember these guys are experienced longsword fencers, not actors. And actors will need (a lot of) time to learn choreographies like that, and doing stuff like this without risk to the actors is pretty difficult. Not to mention that shooting fights like this in a manner that communicates what exactly is happening is a challenge in it of itself. It's no coincedence that a movie like John Wick (which, regardless of any discussion about accuracy, was extremely complex in it's fight choreographies) was concieved of and directed by men who are stuntmen in their own right. and had a ridiculously dedicated actor to work with. The same would have to happen for a historical movie for it's fight scenes to be like the one we see here.
