Putting a Honda K20 4-cylinder engine into a Mazda RX-7 might seem like blasphemy to some, but for Adrian it was just a way to make the car more reliable. The swap has definitely worked out, with its performance on the circuit, drag strip and even on the street undeniable.

As a rotary fan i have no problem with this swap...and yes people rotarys can be reliable as well. you just have to be well knowledge of how they work and know what to do with them. Like any other car if you dont take care of it will break, and no matter how good the engine is if you drive it like hell and dont maintain it. it will fail

far as budget wise smart move for the swap. maintenance on your car, im pretty sure its alot less than a standard rotary engine. happy that u are enjoying the car my dude but i cannot and will not ever take the heart and soul out of my FD.

Smart man and nice build, if you are a track man just like me, you do whatever you need to win and go faster. I have a Mugen built K20A in an LMP3 car at moment and it goes very well, about to go supercharged with 400ish HP, with just 510kgs for total car weight it is going to take a bit to get used to I reckon.

I would prefer to do a full LS3 NA build. The K20a and LS3 come in at the same weight, but the NA LS would be slightly lighter with no turbo etc. An NA 600HP LS3 might also be a little less reliable compared to this K20 turbo build, but hey if you want to go fast, you have to make some sacrifices somewhere.

Many people are giving him crap about this, but until you've worked/owned both engines, you'll never know the potential of them. Both have their pro's and con's. In my honest opinion, the pro's of the k20 outweigh the 13B or even 20b, at least for me it does. Daily driving, the K20 is a much better option (i.e. better gas mileage, bullet proof reliability (as in you can actually push it 24/7 at the track and drive it back home, not trailered), similar power, BEST TRANSMISSION (S2k). Now as far as being modified, many people will find it hard to believe that the K20 gives even the 20B a run for its money. Not to mention, you run into way less issues.

As far as the reliability issues goes for the rotary engines. That is purely subjective to the owners of the cars. I've seen rotaries that NEVER break down, but hardly ever driven hard and babied. And then, I've seen the ones that do break/blow seals often, and thats from 2 types of people. 1) people who don't know how to do maintenance on their engines / do proper mods that will benefit the lifetime of the engine if being driven hard. 2) people who always drive their cars hard at the track w/ proper mods and always have fun with it (believe it or not, it can actually be quite reliable too if taken care of properly. It prolongs the engine before needing a rebuild. NOT 4-5 months like everyone says)

K series engines are cheaper and easier to come by. The F series engines were essentially the prototype for the design of the K series. The F20C is rated higher from the factory but that's mostly because the K engines are detuned from the factory. Add a couple bolt-ons and it doesn't take much to surpass an F series, the F engines also lack i-vtec. Some have gone so far as to swap K24s into S2000s.

I have owned a Japanese Type R EP3 and numerous Mazda Miata before that... An FD 1JZGTE was my dream build but after experiencing the Type R k20a I would go with this. Especially I can get each of these for quite cheap. Clean FD body ¥150.00 , k20a most likely from a Accord Euro R as they go cheapest here ... or crashed EP3... and and the same transmission as the S2000 is from the Altezza with the Beams ... I am hunting for a k20a from now on. The Altezza is common as hell here , that 6 speed should cost about ¥30.000 probably with the 3SGE or a whole crashed Altezza

There is one thing about rotaries that no one ever talks about. The horrible gas mileage/power ratio. A Mazda RX-8 makes 231 hp AT THE CRANK and gets 15-18l/100km(13-15 mpg). That's just poor. My mom owned one for a few months, we had to sell it soon because we ran out of money. THAT is a bigger issue than the reliability. Rotaries are reliable, but not efficient at all.
