I put a poll up on our Instagram page and asked what you thought it cost to K Swap my FD RX7 and the price estimates were all over the place. Rightfully so, it's a tough thing to put a value on. There's so many variables that goes into a custom build. Most of the parts on this car were created from scratch, they can't be purchased at a store. Queue the comments telling me I made a mistake K swapping my RX7:

I honestly don't know why so many people get butthurt when someone buys expert labor to reduce the cost and pain of doing things incorrectly. This whole "Built, not bought" pride thing is super silly. If everyone could do everything, then there wouldn't be a need for anyone to have jobs to do anything. (Besides, most of those folks just omit the cost of their own labor efforts. Every action costs something. ;) ) Sometimes, it's just better/smarter/easier to just buy the labor or the finished thing you need, and go straight to having fun. I like that Ben is straight up about this.

@marczamo2500
@marczamo2500 3 жыл бұрын
@@marquisethomas5611 that's very optimistic number. Reality is to get driving and running reliably is minimum $15k and that's with a crappy roller. Solid Good condition fd rollers with full interior including buttons and plastics (those are always missing and/or broken) are running $15k+ easily these days. FDs are shooting up in price and interior pieces are hard to find and very expensive. If you do all the labor yourself with a good clean solid roller, you can do the swap for probably $30k. Remember his roller was not the best...needed body work and a good wrap job is not cheap.

I have decently low mileage Z32. I'm dead set on a swap. After watching your K swap series I was almost convinced to do the K swap. After a lot more research and spreadsheets to do comparison swaps I decided to do a 2JZ swap. Yep. Smoother operation. Huge power potential. Cheaper. Yes it's actually cheaper. I started with a GE engine. Even after all the machine work, swap parts, conversion harness, ECU, turbo, ect... Still cheaper. The k Swap parts are EXPENSIVE. So much so that the $500 engine price makes little difference between the two. Still... I really enjoyed your K swap content.

the thing that is frustrating about these types of "I swapped it to be more reliable" videos is if you spent 20-30k on a rotary build or hell, even a billet housing build, you'd be just as reliable. it's the lack of maintenance that kills these cars not normal wear.

Kinda expensive now but in the long term (and i mean like 10 years down the road) reliability, maintenance and repair costs are gonna make this build worth it. A lot of people in the comments keep talking about power but in all seriousness is it really worth it to have a super beast thats scary to drive and gives you anxiety about one of its parts failing versus a "no worries" daily driver that you could fix in no time and for really cheap. I personnally love this build and wish i had the time, place and money to do a project like this. Great on them for making it happen!

For under $20K US, you could get a 2017 k20C2 6MT Civic Sedan (Canadian version which is well tuned from the factory), cat-less down pipe, RPF1 rims, Tien Springs, replace the shocks and bushings if too old, ditch all the weight meant for cargo (including underside cladding), spend on the RPF1 rims with some cheap Taiwanee tires (SA-57), replace brakes for stuff that can do duel-duty, k-Tune it to lower the Vtec activation. So here’s to another $10k to get it fixed and hopefully then I’ll get it repainted. Might be a couple years before it’s running again but I should be at about the same cost as yours just about when I’m happy with it. Thinking I’ll shoot for a f-it 700whp build this time though, I’ve got other cars for reliability like my k series accord or restored triumph spitfire-surprisingly reliable and cheap to repair.

This is the kind of true to life video I love to watch. Sucks when someone sees build videos, gets excited and drops money on a project car only to find out that the true cost is exponentially higher than what they planned to spend. This results in an unfinished hulk sitting under a tarp and slowly rusting away.

As much as I love the Honda K, it is not for everything, 20B all day in a FD and for that money you get a lot of rotary sauce my friend. Not to mention newly built rotary can be made a lot more sturdy and trusted than any stock 13B from factory, again for good as the K can sound it does not beat a highly tuned rotary in that department either imho. From wrap, wrap, wrap to an explosion that send off to a 9k+ primal scream other set ups just cannot reproduce.

Honestly i don't believe that n/a honda k series engine with turbo and 400 whp will be more reliable than original rotary engine... I bought my mazda RX8 from Copart auction...I got lucky and compression of my rotor is OK for now. But i checked the prices and brand new complete engine for my RX8 will cost less than swapping it to a different engine...And i actually bought it because i wanted to try rotary engine! And so far i really love the feel of rotary car. Sometimes i have a feeling like I'm riding a four wheel sport bike))The best way i can describe it))

Yeah, I kinda thought it would be expensive. But as a hobby it doesn't really matter.

Start with a less complex car. I had a Fiat X1/9 K swapped with upgrades to the suspension, brakes, new wheels, tires, and a few other things for roughly 38K total including labor, the included cost of the car is 3K. Still expensive though...any resto modded car is gonna be pricey.

That RX7 is a beauty, even though it doesn't make any sense, I still think I'd have it over a similarly priced C8 Corvette despite the vette being a much faster and much more reliable car 😅

I had no idea you used an S2k transmission. Damn, this must actually be my dream car just there. Always loved the shape of the RX7 but hated the rotary reliability. Going all HONDA where it matters is the best choice ever. Hope you get to keep it forever man! 🤘

Would really like to see how the gross weight, and weight distribution of this build compares to a stock FD. For an added bonus compared to a well done LS swap. Not trying to start anything, just curious.

$16k for a rolling shell just souds awful. I understand there was a lot in it when purchased, but its clear from the start, this is not a budget endeavour. Very nice fd though.

Cost wise is erradic and not the same for everyone. As you could see he alone has discrepancy on prices. Not everyone will do a wrap pay andy ect. Not everyone will use the same ecu. Bottonline have a bigger budget than what you might think you'll spend.

ok....a rolling shell rx is expensive af.. in the end its worth it and im sure you didnt need some of those high-end parts . This a build you dont count the money taken to get your dream and some of us will try parts out , 15''vs 17 we may not like the 17 and go back to 15s then try a short ram intake then a cold air an back to stock box and the testing goes on. I believe in when you buy a car it should be a car you love and not whats the coolest or fastest and to have an rx7 you can ramp on ? is a dream some of us will never see happen ( lol ask the guy that started the swap ) side note ...dont sell that car man dont ever sell it

Mam rx7 fd 2jz.
