How to fix KitchenAid mixer that stopped working. We have not used our kitchenaid professional 6 mixer for a long time and suddenly it stopped working. It does not spin at all.
I opened it and tested the electrical flow. The electricity stopped at the Thermal Fuse. Basically the thermal fuse broke somehow.
I short circuited the 2 cables to bypass the fuse temporarily so that my Wife can user the mixer for 1 day then I ordered this thermal fuse:

You will need a soldering iron to fix it, if you don't have a soldering iron yet PLEASE consider using my link to buy from Amazon (helps with my channel):

IF it is needed to WELD a THERMAL fuse, great care should be used to avoid the Welding Heat to trip the fuse. Use a wet piece of paper towel over the fuse, maintain the longer leads and use pliers to sink the Heat transfer between the welding spot and the fuse.

Thanks for this video. It appears the tank look of the device is deceiving. I recommend reading and following the directions to a "T." You can't mix more than the directions state without the risk of over heating.

Same issue with my mixer. FWIW, they put the thermal fuse there next to the motor winding so that it can be in contact and trip if the temp gets too high. Remember, it's not an electrical amperage fuse, it's a thermal fuse, so putting it on the PC board would not protect the motor from exceeding the thermal tolerances of the design.

As said, thermal overload due to excessive heat. This happens for a reason. At near 10 years old, the gearbox grease my have lost its effectiveness. Time to clean the gear box and replace the grease. This should reduce friction and hence load on the motor. When any fuse fails, it's a warning that something is wrong. Without finding out the cause and avoiding it from happening again, another fuse will fail. At least these machines are repairable. Many now made are not.

This happens for a reason? Then what’s the reason. The same thing happened to mine as this person’s. Working fine. Put it away for a while then went to use it and it’s dead. That’s not what thermal fuses are supposed to do.

Yes a bad design. Mine worked to make a loaf of bread and then popped a puff of smoke on the second use. So maybe a total of 15 minutes running for $300. Not very well engineered. Mine is a Professional 550 HD. I hope I can find the fuse. Thank you for your video. I will need a better soldering iron that I have so I will get it from your Amazon page.

The best way to prevent it from overheating in the first place is to use it well within its operational limits. Have a 5 quart unit and I won't put anything more than 3 quarts. Plus, I frequently feel for overheating on the motor casing during operation.

I'm not an electrician, by any means, but I'm not afraid to try to fix it on my own. Do you think it could it be a short somewhere? I am going to jump the fuse for now and grease the gears. Is there as a circuit breaker that will break due to heat instead of an overload of electricity? This is a thermal fuse that feels the motor overheating and will burn out to prevent the motor from burning out.

While i was waiting for the new fuse to arrive, i temporarily bridge (just connected two wires directly together). Please be warned that without a fuse, bridging the wires may cause fire and/or damages to your mixer. Because if the mixer gets overused or something got overheated nothing will stop without a fuse!

@MikeSims70
@MikeSims70 Жыл бұрын
Inline thermal fuses like the one you found are not "bad design". They are triggered leveraging thermal characteristics and so then it becomes a matter of PROPER DESIGN to have them inserted into a break in the wire and kept close to the device they are actually protecting. Having such a fuse on a circuit board would actually be considered a bad design for several reasons, one being that it would add heat to the circuit board that could then create other problems for the whole circuit and also it would not be in close proximity to the motor, which would mean that you have to ignore the requirements for implementing this type of fuse as it was designed to be used. So NO ... kitchen aide didn't make an amateur design choice when they put the fuse where you found it. They actually did it exactly as it was engineered to be done and the entire circuit is precisely and accurately following proper engineering standards. Making the fuse easy to replace for a home tech is never a design requirement for a quality product and it never should be. Proper engineering to result in a highly durable and capable machine is always the number one goal for a company like Kitchen Aid. And they consistently deliver that goal to their customers as their reputation speaks to so loudly even in these years where competition in this space is fierce.

2 years later. Any tutorial on how to put in the new fuse? Not everyone has experience with a smoldering iron or welding. Can’t we use a heat gun to shrink wrap instead?
@albertsmedley3636
@albertsmedley3636 Ай бұрын
Shrink wrap is only to protect a bare wire from touching something and creating a spark and possible fire. The wires in this case still need to be soldered. Also, there isn't enough of a stub on the fuse to try to use a mechanical binder of some sort. You must properly solder in this case. There are many excellent videos on how to solder and what tools (different types of soldering irons) to use for each case.

@albertsmedley3636
@albertsmedley3636 Ай бұрын
He just removed the bad fuse and then reconnected the wires without the fuse. The motor can then get power but is dangerous as if it does overheat, it could start a fire. The thermal fuse is there to stop everything before it gets hot enough to burn. The thermal fuse is a safety device that precludes a fire.
