When I was little, we had to drag our decomposing cow, Oreo, out from under the shed and out into an open field where the vultures could peck her body. She died from being underfed. It really disturbed me when I was younger. I think about it often. Thank you, Adrienne.

I really loved 'Songs & Instrumentals' when it came out but generally skipped over this song until 2 weeks ago, when stray dogs killed our neighborhood cat Budzgi who was semi-feral but lived at our porch for 3 years and was affectionate towards us. Seeing his mauled body was quite traumatizing, as well as arranging burial for a creature that was alive and well hours ago but I kept composure. For some reason, the next day I put on the album and when this song came up, I listened to the lyrics and completely broke down into tears - which is part of the healing, I guess. This is a perfect album from start to finish - poetic, mystical and melancholic

The line "everything eats, and is esten" oddly enough makes me think of a line from a completely different song. "Hungry makes us human", it doesn't make much sense, but it makes me think of it and it has a meaning I can't quite grasp yet. Also, if you've ever watched the Silent Voice, this song reminds me of Shoko's sister. The way she would take pictures of carcasses or dead insects to drive her sister away from death, it reminds me of this. Again that's only through vague association, but still. This song is beautiful :)

last year or maybe the year before, i had a pet mouse named athena, but we liked to call her tina. tina was the best girl, she loved to be held and pet and she loved strawberries. i don't know what happened but one day she got sick, she got an awful rash on her back that she couldn't stop scratching, i felt so awful whenever i looked at her. days after it appeared, we found her lying down, barely able to breathe. she tried so hard to stay, she fought so hard, until i held her. as i held her, her breathing slowed till it stopped. she died in my hands. she felt safe enough to die in my hands. i think about her every single day, and i cry, till there's no more tears i can cry. you were the best girl athena and i'm grateful to have been your person
