How To Make Your Rap Vocals Sound Better (2018)

You're wondering how to make your rap vocals sound better. Watch this video to understand the basic, but crucial tips into making higher quality rap vocals. Today I'll be talking about:
1. The Proximity Effect
The proximity effect is something that occurs within your microphone while recording. If you’ve ever noticed the closer you are to your mic, the louder and richer your voice sounds. The reason for this is because the closer you are to a microphone the more emphasis there is on lower frequencies due to the change in frequency response.
2. Compression and Over Compressing
Essentially, compression takes the loud parts of a vocal and makes them quieter to balance out the dynamic range of the audio file. This allows for the vocal to sit better on the beat.
3. EQ and Finding the Right Frequencies
Make sure to get rid of those unnecessary low end frequencies that don’t come through in your voice. Majority of the time, the average male voice doesn’t produce anything lower than 87.31 hertz and the average female voice doesn’t produce anything lower than 174.61 hertz. This means that anything under those frequencies are better off being cut out to keep the vocal sounding cleaner.
4. Determination
You’re might not be able to understand everything when you first start off. That’s just fact. It takes time to develop an ear for finding those nasally frequencies, and hearing the difference between good compression and “pumpy” compression. Don’t let that discourage you! I started off in the same boat as you. But through time and practice you’ll catch on and learn to hear things differently than the average listener.

More ratio just means more compression! If I have a 2:1 ratio that means that every 2 dB will be turned into 1 dB. So if some parts of your vocals sound way too loud and other parts way too quiet, add more ratio to balance out the loudness so that everything sounds more evenly balanced. Thanks for the love bro✌🏼

Thanks man! I would search for the answers of any problems I was having. If I had trouble understanding how to use EQ, I would search videos on how EQ's work and why people EQ the way they do. And I wouldn't just watch one video, I'd watch multiple to make sure I get a good grasp on the concept. And after every video I'd go back to my project and make adjustments based on what I just learned. Make sure that you're learning 50% of the time and actually putting it into practice the other 50%!
