A person claiming to be the owner (Grew K) commented on Schooner Girl's comment to say that, "Well I got my notification that there was a new video and lo and behold there was my painting. I sat down and watched with the kids. It was absolutely emotional watching the varnish come off and the sea roar to life. I got the painting for the faces of the two Mariners. Even with the varnish and the terrible condition the canvas was in I had to have it. It just spoke to me. I am shocked and pretty darn excited!" So based on that and their other comments in the thread they didn't know it was done yet. But Covid times aren't really the best to try filming reactions of owners, esp. if they're living well outside of Chicago.

sometimes I just go and looks at the work of old masters or world renowned artists just to remind myself that nobody, in the history of art ever, has been able to paint feet. It makes me feel better. Also the knowledge that feet are really weird. It doesn't matter the creature: badger, cat, birds, humans, - they always look weird.
@Stettafire3 жыл бұрын
I'm probably the only human alive who actually enjoys painting feet. Feet have all kinds of interesting shapes. If you start with a basic construction with a curved box it's not so bad. You just need to know how to turn that box around the place and remember, the bow has a curve because your foot (even flat feet, just to less of an extent) has an arch.

The water looked like a mountain with green/yellow grass until the varnish came off. Seeing the whitecaps on the waves be revealed was pretty awesome. I’m usually most enamored by vibrant colors or the subject’s skin being revealed, but in this case simply seeing rough seas go from yellow/green to a pretty tame blue but a very bright white was super satisfying.

The artist was not only talented, his sea being one of the more realistic pieces i've seen, but he also either saw or did the research on what a raft and how people (edit: at sea) would look like. Awesome to see this piece get brought back to life. It's so well made.

@@DrWhom As an artist, I'd want my work treated like this. He restores things to what they're meant to be. I'd be thrilled to know my work was in his hands, that he'd put forth the effort to give it life again. Museums leave nasty yellowed varnish on as 'patina' when PAINTINGS ARE NOT MEANT TO HAVE THAT. If the artist had wanted it to be yellow, they would have painted it yellow.

There is not a single video from you so far, that doesn't leave me stunning about your work. About how a painting was in the first place, than discolored and some times humiliated over time trough us humans, and then giving his beauty back to the art and enable the world to see the art again how it should be. How it was in the eyes of the artist. And seeing your mastery of craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing this with us. Really appreciate.

Julian, since discovering your channel I have assembled an impressive toothbrush collection since ONE toothbrush doesn’t do the job of cleaning and polishing every single different tooth. Your work, narration, skill, and dedication purifies my very own convictions of change-the delicate tension between then, now, and the future. My world is more vibrant after viewing one of your restorations, essentially restoring my own energy to pick up my paintbrush and start painting again after a long, unnecessary hiatus. Thank you.

Wouldn’t you love to know the back story of these paintings? Someone loved the picture enough to purchase it, how did it lose the love so that it’s now in this condition? What caused the holes, tears and paint loss? I think it would be fascinating to know the how and why paintings such as this end up in Julian’s studio.
@louckykoneko3 жыл бұрын
possibly bought by someone who did care, eventually (possibly a few generations later) passed on to someone who didn't care, kept by people who didn't care for a while (again, possibly a few generations) until it is eventually passed on to someone who does care and brings it to Julian. alternatively, the owners all did care but didn't notice the discoloring for such a long time because it happened gradually, eventually the painting was damaged in a move/during an accident/whatever and kept in storage for a while before someone remembered or rediscovered it and decided to bring it to Julian.

So I bought it from a person in NY who bought it from an estate sale. I loved it as I see it as a beautiful display of hope during a bleak moment. Everything is uncertain but they aren't alone. I have no idea who the artist is, I've been told it was panted sometime in the 1800's and is "European New School". I still can't get over how beautifully they painted the ocean, something I had no clue about until after this restoration. I love that he made a video of it!

This is the first video I've seen on this channel, and watching the center man's hair emerge from under the old varnish felt almost profound. It's something about showing devotion and care to an inconsequential object that feels like a deeply human love, like finding a piece of masking tape on the side of a doorframe and knowing that someone was there before you and they were as determined as you to treat it well even though it was not necessary
