The Taco Bell dog was a chill lil Chihuahua named Gidget. He died in 2009 at the ripe age of 15. Honestly since he was just a lil yellow Chihuahua it would of been pretty easy to replace him but he actually didn't leave because he died - it was because Taco Bell same store sales fell by 6% when they were running the ads, and Latin American advocacy groups were upset about it at the time. So in 2000 Gidget stopped being the Taco Bell dog but he went on to be in a Geico commercial in 2002 and played as Bruisers mom in Legally Blonde 2 Red White and Blonde.

I 100% get the idea of, 'never turn computer off' mentality, and actually lost my old PSU that way. PSU at some point apperantly broke, but not enough that it couldn't run, just not enough to START the computer. So when I shut it off (as I tend to do every 1-3 months or so), it wouldn't start again. Had I never turned it off, computer would've worked 'fine'.

To add to the immersion argument: when I play Spider-Man games and I swing by a billboard or Time Square and there are fake ads, some can be funny but they take me out of the game a little. If I swing by a Coca-Cola ad or the Lego store or whatever, it would make Spidey’s New York feel more real. I never understood why games like that didn’t use more real ads.

I saw a lady watching a movie on her phone sitting on the steering wheel one day. she kept taking like 20 seconds starting off from traffic lights so i got up beside her to see what she was doing and she was fully watching a movie, i blew my horn at her and she assumed she was in my way so she went to get over to the right side of the road, the problem was she was in the far right lane already so she drove off the road into a field.

Just past halfway and I'm surprised that there's been no mention of Oddworld: Munch's Odyssey and their advertisement of Sobe as the vending machines in the game. It works so well, too. I legit love the Strawberry Daiquiri flavor, and I'm still sad they don't do glass bottles anymore.

Without spoilers: That Ad appears when Sam delivers a No.2 Specimen (a poopy), and in some places when a baby does this, it's called "making a boom-boom," and some parents attach a motorcycle noise to the process to make it more entertaining for the baby.

World of Warcraft did an advertisement at one point for Mountain Dew. I recall code red and blue would give you a in game code which you could then juice your robot pet that was introduced at the same time and if you had a player with red and one with blue your pets would like mini battle like rock sock em robots! I think at that point is when shortly after they introduced pet battles in mop as the Mountain Dew thing was 2009

The placements are fine, when it makes sense tbh but only thing I have in the back pocket for the ad-pocalypse and when it eventually hits gaming is the fact there are still enough games that I haven't played to go back to. On emulators etc. If you keep bending over they'll keep thrusting, tbf 🤷

9:11 I loved this captain crunch game, but more importantly the OST playing is from a gamecube game called Darkened Skye. It's about a girl named Skye who goes on an adventure to vanquish evil, and she uses her staff and magical runes that combine together to let her cast magical spells-and by magical runes I mean magical skittles. It was fully voice acted so yes the story involved people talking about skittles. The music was pretty good and is still stuck in my head 'til this very day.

OMG, I remember Cool Spot! It was one of my fav games on the Sega Genesis and I spent way too much time playing it, lol. But I have to agree that advertising has become so much more predatory. When I was in high school (bk in the 90s) I took an English Media course and very quickly learned how ads manipulate ppl. My fav example of this is dishwashing soap/detergent where they tell u it gets ur dishes "virtually" spotless. I then went to college directly out of HS for Graphic Design, which included marketing. I have nvr trusted ads and always hated them. I used to record my fav TV shows on VHS so that I could ffwd thru the ads, and then DVRs became a thing and now streaming. I have an aversion to advertising so if I see an ad in my video game and it's massively out of place (ie Death Stranding) it's just going to mk me angry. Thankfully so far this horrible practise has not entered the games I enjoy, so far.

17:30 In my town our Pizza Hut works just like a fancy restaurant you'd take your date to and sit in a booth except you're ordering pizza instead of food you can't pronounce. They also serve alcohol in restaurant only. By far the best pizza in town. Dominos has the best cheesy/garlic bread though.

Twinkies are not exactly well known in my country. But after watching zombieland well.. no doubt about what a twikie is! and the best part is that it feels integrated into the movie. Waynes world is a little more rough around the handling, but i think its also at least partly used for comedy, and that definitely works. In Death stranding though.. perhaps if he just picked up a random monster drink from somewhere.. and there werent 5 of them plastered in the foreground.. It would have felt way more natural. Sadly though, the death stranding example is a perfect case of bad publicity being better than no publicity. We all talk about this death stranding situation, and it was a low cost solution for Monster. They gain a huge amount of publicity for a very low cost.

16:55 there are two types of pizza hut stores btw asmond, there are the originals like the pic, where you sit down to eat, and then there's what they call the Delco stores which are Deliver and carry out and those are the stores people typically associate with pizza hut's decline as they're trying to be the best delivery service. Its funny because the old sit in Pizza Hut in my city is now an aquatic pet store.

If an ad makes you laugh you will remember it because of the good feeling you had from the laugh. If an ad makes you annoyed to the point of losing hope for humanity then you will remember it even more. The second being a case for mobile games. Its a same concept with KZbinrs too. A great youtuber is remembered but so is controversial youtuber. Companies have a choice which route they will take the creative one or the shameless way.

Back in 2001 there was (and still is) a Funcom MMO by the name of Anarchy Online. It's set in the distant future after humanity has had its civil war between class systems, one side being the Corporations and the other side being The Resistance. Players could choose to be on either side, but that's not what's important for this rant. What's important is they had massive in game Billboards in the main cities for each faction that played Ads for In Game Shops AS WELL as real sponsors. You'd be walking through a main city listening to Gregorian Chanting and suddenly the Old Spice Jingle would cut in. And it was fucking amazing. No one cared that it broke the "immersion" of the futuristic setting to have Old Spice commercials playing on billboards. No one cared because it didn't force you to stand there and watch the ad. It was just there in passing as a video on a billboard that you could watch or just keep going, it'll play regardless with or without you. I believe that addressed the main issue with ads in games that force you to stop playing, momentarily cutting off the dopamine feed, which makes the player respond with impatient annoyance as no one wants to be made to sit and pay attention to something they don't give a shit about. Much like in 2012 when Micro-Transactions started making their way into paid AAA games, we all raged and said we wouldn't play any games with them. Fast forward 10 years and it's in every game. To keep to that creed would mean we just don't get to play games, anymore. Ads will be no different. I just hope they do it in a way we still have a choice like Funcom figured out 21 years ago.

A year or 2 ago My friends and I bought a "Jurassic World the Board Game" one night just because we were board as hell and stuck in the city for a couple days. And hidden on one of the pieces was a QR code and we were like wow I bet this leads to some cool easter egg or something. And it just linked to an ad for the movie like why the hell would you have secret qr code on a board game piece that just leads to an ad.

When there is an ad in a video game or movie and you don't notice its an ad because its just part of the content. That is how you make a good ad. When a movie does the lil zoom in on a can of soda you know its just an ad and it takes you out of it.

when games you like start to have ads in them then what happens is the arms race of advertisers vs adblockers. I can predict that if that were the case then cheat programs would be engineered into adblockers. (Btw if you wanna play mobile games w/o ads look up Blokada 5s for android users, and infolock for iphone users)

Games basically have ads now. Battlepass, DLC, skins/cosmestics, etc. It's not that big of a jump to just change the ignored pixels from battlepass to Colgate toothpaste.
