im only 27 and feeling the same way - jaded and numb. my 9-to-5 involves a lot of writing and by the time i reach home at night or have some space on the weekend to journal, my brain is drained. just navigating this bizarre adulthood and accepting that it is what it is… but then my inner voice constantly bugs me, “is this all there is to life?” i feel ya, nathan, i feel you.

You are definitely not an adult loser. "Adult" is largely a concept imagined by children. It's kind of doesn't exist. I remember as a kid thinking how much fun paperwork would be. Kids are dumb.😂 A long walk sounds like a great coping mechanism and so does a studio Ghibli fidget toy.

I am out here adult-losering with you Nathan :)) I have never been big on comparison with other people but it's mostly in a "I have disappointed my child-self" way and not being where I imagined myself...Lots to unpack in therapy !!!!! I am trying to think about myself less though and more about the world around me. It helps a lot to decenter oneself, to enjoy the people and things that surround us. I rewatch Howls Moving Castle every year when it’s summer as some sort of tradition so that’s definitely a favorite! but I also love the Wind Rises and Porco Rosso. One Studio Ghibli film that I never really enjoyed was Ocean Waves partially because it wasn’t directed by Miyazaki and like you mentioned the forced relationship between the two characters. The main character had more chemistry with his best friend than the love interest 😭

Haha Levy can indeed be cringe but I appreciate that she gives herself the space to be quirky, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Her non fiction is lovely, especially real estate, and swimming home is imo her best fiction!
