how timely it is that you mention theresa hak kyung cha! i only learned about her through Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong yesterday and found myself going down the rabbit hole of her homicide and her work Dictee. have you read Minor Feelings by any chance?
@nathansnook14 сағат бұрын
exactly how i learned about her! through Hong’s essay which is one i think about constantly when it comes to violence on the body when really Theresa’s work is an exploration of the body and its inherent place and language. so to see the work she put in, only to have her life so quickly destroyed hurts so much 💔

I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on Intermezzo. I have it on hold from the library so hope to read it soon. Love that you saw the Lee Ufan / Rothko exhibit. Wish that I could do the same. I went to the Venice Biennale and recently the Armory Show so I feel similarly “art-ed out”. There was a lot of art I’ve seen this year that I would describe as ‘intestinal’ or reverse anthropomorphic. Similar to your thoughts on staccato and modern communication, which was so wonderfully described, I feel that these are ways to punctuate what it feels like to be human today.
@nathansnook16 сағат бұрын
wishing you a speedy hold! i know it’s gonna be quite a long wait 😵💫 The Ufan/Rothko was beautiful! except on one floor was Rothko, and another floor Ufan, and i wish curation space would’ve put them side by side as i thought they would be better in conversation with each other. but yes !!! being arted out is so real! it’s a dream of mine to one day do the Venice Biennale! what a treat! and i think it’s beautiful how we are all trying to pinpoint how we are living today. the Anicka Yi show seen her also looks at the intestinal, but also through the use of AI. manmade vs human made, taking the manmade and putting it in human form. it’s a beautiful time to be alive in exploration ✨🤍

I really like the monologue portion of this video, I love that you do this in general, and this one felt to me like an exercise inspired by Bluets. There are so many things I want to respond to, but as to your question of what Sontag "we" read. I attempted to read through her massive catalogue (Fiction, essays, plays... oh my! She really did a lot of different types of writing!) in chronological order but got distracted a few books. I enjoyed Against interpretation the essay collection. Illness as Metaphor/AIDS and Its Metaphors are important texts for me but I have a specific interest in cultural production surrounding HIV/AIDS. One of my favorite parts of Cookie's book is the story of her and Divine driving in the WV van. So sweet.

i've just finished On Women since i've put this video out and i can't get enough of her! i've been watching interviews on my free time and she is such a strong voice, a strong writer, and the many different kinds of writing lead into the many different kinds of things she was interested in but also did. how she got to reading and doing everything astounds me. and I LOVED the parts about her and John Waters and Divine. so so beautiful <3

@nathansnook5 күн бұрын
sorry! meant to expand and talk more about other cw mfa writing programs, but yes! fully funded in the sense that it’s good to be enrolled for the 2 years but not in the sense that it’s financially viable if you took out large sums of student debt. in ways, it has always been about buying time until you fish out a book deal but in the end, i don’t think many writers get to achieve this.

I rewatch Howls Moving Castle every year when it’s summer as some sort of tradition so that’s definitely a favorite! but I also love the Wind Rises and Porco Rosso. One Studio Ghibli film that I never really enjoyed was Ocean Waves partially because it wasn’t directed by Miyazaki and like you mentioned the forced relationship between the two characters. The main character had more chemistry with his best friend than the love interest 😭
