2015 Young Australian of the Year, Thomas King talks about how the world expects young people to plan for a world that won't exist
After last year being named Victorian Young Australian of the Year and VCE Leader of the Year, Thomas is now 19 and works as a youth campaigner at Animals Australia. He believes that ‘no matter who you are or what your age, everybody has the ability to create a profound impact.’
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

When I was his age, I used to spend the vast majority of my time doing absolutely nothing. Really proud of his ambition and bright future ahead of this fella!

Congratulations Thomas, on your Young Australian of the Year award. Your work, especially regarding palm oil, is hugely impressive.

Searching for examples of great speeches for my Marketing class and came across this gem. I really loved this speech, Thomas. I'm passionate about helping people break out of traditional employment and business models and to start thinking about what they can 'create' to take control of their financial and vocational stability. So, this really resonated with me and gave me some fresh ideas to pursue. And I really loved hearing about the support you fought for and gained to make your path a reality. Please continue to advocate for this in your generation and generations to come.

Great speech and very inspiring, apart from the dystopian future of Uber, which obliterated the gig economy they created and a vast population of nomads chasing the next available overpriced AirBnB just to have shelter for a few hours from the hurricanes, floods, sand storms and 60 degree heat wave.

Just a suggestion Thomas that you check out Eat Right for Your Type, old-school No.1 best seller, suggesting how the lectin content of our food preferences affects our resistance to disease. And when we follow the pre-destined requirement for our blood type, a lesser intake of harmful lectins can be managed. That this is actually embedded in our DNA - determining whether we are carnivores or vegan. I found it interesting putting this somewhat to the test, as a fitness coach trained in nutrition. In a consultation I was suggesting to my gym members, who wanted to lose weight, that they follow a high protein diet. Several said they don’t eat red meat and rarely chicken or fish. Out of curiosity, I asked if they knew their blood type and: is it Type A? Those who knew their type, were amazed. They were indeed Type A. Type A were the original vegetarians. These members of mine were not meant to eat meat and here it was, as if their bodies intuitively knew this. Type O needs to eat meat, in moderation sure, but it is essential to build their muscles for the activity they are wont to do & for optimal health & longevity. The author Paul d’Adamo was following in his father’s footsteps and the two generations of research grabbed long lasting attention. Recent author & podcaster, Dr Steven Gundry MD (The Plant Paradox), as I see it, condones aspects of D’Adamo’s book, but he also agrees with, & follows, similar guidelines where too many of the wrong lectins - many found in grains - are precursors to disease. Many people - of my generation sorry hehe - have read D’Adamo’s book. I’ve met two 20s somethings friends who have too. People out there who may be following you. I find it sad that because the halt to deforestation and carbon fuels isn’t winning the environment battle, it comes down yet again to Joe & Jill average who have to pay the price by modifying the content of the most important human function - eating. Thanks for this opportunity of communication. You’re excellent work deserves all the input you can get, challenging or otherwise. Couldn’t agree more about palm oil. In fact all harmful oils being insidiously included in the ingredients of all our processed foods. From biscuits to long life milk this is only now, after all the decades of damage, coming to the mass awareness. Best wishes in your quest. 😉🙏🏻

I appreciate that this young man is driven, and I tend to agree with everything he said, but it's one side of the picture. It's a ways off before AI and automation take over all the mundane jobs and someone has to wait tables, dig ditches, and drive the dumpsters in the meantime. You might have to do things that don't make you feel fulfilled; get over it. And learn stuff - don't you want your brain surgeon to know exactly how to remove your tumor without looking it up on wikipedia druing the surgery? And maybe be a little scared. Because in preparing for a future where AI eliminates all unfulfilling work, we may also need to think about how we'll convince AI to not eliminate us.

its inspirational. but naive. think man. everything that you are using. clothes, techs, books, food everything - always use something that needs to be exploited. and that is nature.
