for those who weren't obsessed with vampires as a young person, and thereby rather liked the movie enough to listen to the commentary track/DVD extras: Raze, the werewolf with the ultra-deep voice, is portrayed by Kevin Grevioux, and a) that's his real voice, no digital alteration, man's just a proper bit of mutant in real life; b) he wrote a shitload of the script, likely accounting for all of the interesting choices, leading to c) he has an undergrad in microbiology, and a master's degree in genetic engineering, from Howard, which is why the script has some genuinely interesting attempts at trying to square vampires and modern biology, in spite of, well, all the other writing choices

Vampires vs Werewolves were definitely made "cultural canon" by this movie. Before, it was an unspoken and so implicit sort of thing. It existed within the lexicon, but never outright said. This was the first story to really make it explicit. Twilight would not exist without this film. I have 0 doubt that Meyer saw this movie and decided to make a lame ass Mormon take for infantile women. And ever since this movie, internet nerds have insisted that vampires vs werewolves have literally always been a thing. Buuuut in "vampire lore," vampires basically were werewolves. Bram Stoker, at least, presented the idea that Dracula could *TF* into a lycanthropic form, among other *TFs.* Abiding by actual anthropology, most cultures didn't adhere to a "vampires vs werewolves" mindset. Most cultures had variant takes on either notion, and before Hollywood, werewolves were generally understood to *TF* into full wolves, not hybridized humanoid forms. One notable exception being the Old Norse with the hamrammar. Uldhednar and berserkir were depicted as *TFing* into upright humanoid wolfmen and bearmen. Then you have Greek myth, but those were less *TF* cases, and more like satyr, minotaur, centaur, etc., which were just hybridized human-beast peoples normally.

There's pretty much nothing about vampires and werewolves hating each other in folklore. There are bits of it throughout 20th century media, but Underworld is actually one of the first series where vampires and werewolves are strictly sworn enemies.
@ThreadBomb5 ай бұрын
Bear in mind that the 'folklore' is just shit that people made up. Vampires and werewolves have appeared in movies since the Universal Studios monster mash-ups of the 1940s, but I think the first werewolf/vampire fight was in Frankenstein's Bloody Terror (1968).
@ZelphTheWebmancer29 күн бұрын

Suddenly the recent gap between YMS videos, and the "moving forward" title of the previous vid made a lot more sense. It's devastating. Scoot was 100% the only reason I paid any attention to the Oscars each year. I got a bit choked up hearing his voice at the beginning. I was reluctant to watch for a bit, but im going to enjoy these just like the rest of the series. Love you guys

The usual "Synecdoche" at the end of the video really hit hard this time.

If Scoot was here rn, he would have said “fun fact - did you know that this commentary was recorded BEFORE I died?”

This film is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's so early 2000's.

I still can’t believe Scott is gone, may he rest in peace. Thank you for this, Adum, this could not have been easy for you to put together despite everything but we appreciate it and its good to hear from all three of you bashing a movie one more time.

This is great, just the Twilight Bros shooting the shit. Shout out to the editor too. Adum and his Pals never fail to make me smile.
