I'm not knocking ADV bikes, but the off roading I do is pretty serious. Those big heavy bikes would not make it. That's why I ride a street bike ( VFR800) on road, and a full on MX bike (YZ250) off road...

You dont want to drop a GS 1250 (500 + lbs) in a middle of a hill, cause if your alone, forget it man... throwing the key in the bushes and declare it stolen would be more simple than trying to lift it back on 2 wheels.

Down here in Australia, the term is ‘two-track,’ as opposed to ‘single-track’. The former is typically shaped by the wheel tracks of a four wheeled vehicle. Also, an adventure bike will take you places you wouldn’t usually go. I guess that’s why the term ‘adventure’ is so apt, but you have to be OK with dirt, dust, mud, rocks, sand, slower speeds and sometimes being a million miles from civilisation.

To each his own when it comes to dual sport vs. ADV, but I'll simply say this: worldwide ADVer and KZbinr, Itchy Boots, would take issue with this. None of her bikes have been bigger than a 500. She's travelled tens of thousands of miles in multiple countries on different continents, and it seems to me that a lighter, more basic bike is better. A big, fancy ADV bike with rider modes and other tech is not only heavier and more unwieldy off road; there's more stuff to go wrong.

On the other hand, she's tiiiiiiny, and is able to spend most of her time offroad (or at least, off pavement). Spikes point here is that for many of us (most?)you MUST spend a ton of time on pavement for a little time off, so it's damn nice to not have that pavement time suck. With that said, I agree the tech is meh. You're best off - if lots of time on pavement is a reality for you - going middleweight ADV. Much easier to handle and less to go wrong vs the big bikes, and every bit as fast in practice. Dual sports make more sense if you're trailering them out somewhere, or just live super close to where you want to ride. Or you want to do MUCH more challenging riding than fire roads and doubletrack. Sure, Pol Tarres does crazy shit on a T7, but if you want to learn that stuffz you want to learn it on a dual sport or even a dirt bike, not a 450lb adv bike.

I'm new to riding, endorsement for 6 months, I don't know alot about motorcycles, but I can confidently say that I am going to do 1,000+ miles on my new Honda crf250l rally in the 1st month after the snow melts, I'm going to hopefully level it out at 50/50 for those miles and fully enjoy it, if it's uncomfortable then get some mods or a new seat, customize your bike for you 😁

@@MudOregonVet You're new. You don't have the perspective to appreciate what it's like to do pavement miles on something designed to do that. Don't get me wrong. I love bikes, all bikes. But different bikes do things VERY differently and the experience is entirely different. If you think the experience of riding a crf250l on streets is anywhere remotely like an Tenere 700 or GS1250A you're in for a marked surprise. But where the CRF250L is sublime in the dirt, it's sooooooo slow once you're out on twisty roads, let alone highway. You can do it for sure, and any time on two wheels is good time, but it's nowhere near as enjoyable on pavement as a bigger bike.

A couple of weeks ago I brought a Royal Enfield Himalayan and haven’t had so much on a motorbike in a long time even if it’s has only 24 hp It’s fun coming across a dirt raid and actually seeing where it goes and not just wondering. The Tripper Nav is brilliant you set your destination and it lets you know if that dirt road you just turned down is a dead end or not if it’s not it just reroutes and I have found some really cool dirt roads and trailers. Plus it is super comfy for a long ride.

I went from big to small. Got a van for my vacations and a CRF 250 L for riding around wherever I go! Best thing I ever did. Just unload it and start exploring or go into a town. If the weather gets bad I just load it into the back of the van. Cheers Yammie, and happy New Year!

Adventure bikes are awesome! Dual sports are awesome! Totally different machines but one is obviously better off road and one is better on road. I use my DR350 as a light weight middle ground machine (4.2 gallon tank and Tusk soft luggage). It will run 60/65 MPH all day long and I often do 500 miles a day with it. Great older enduro for the $!!!

Hondas CB500X is probably the most underrated, small ADV bike out there! I've taken mine places it probably has no business going 9ff road and it's also got good wind protection and legs for the highway

This video is more in the scope of the limitations applied to those of us that live in Texas, especially in one of the bigger cities. I'd much rather have a CRF300L than my Tiger 800 XRx, because it takes me at least 1hr of riding in Houston in either direction to find gravel and dirt. For the rest of the country, probably 90%, a big adventure bike makes no sense unless you'll be touring too. I've been riding 20+ years, a lot of it on dirt, but at the end of the day, even the most skilled rider will have a better time on the proper equipment. I've put my Tiger on jeep track, and single track... it's a chore.

@@sirspectrum6865 I'm well aware I have a tiger roadie with a 19" front wheel. A 21" front wheel will still not change the fact that it's still an almost 500lb motorcycle. There are better tools for the job, but like I said, the video was with a Texas slant where if you live in a big city like Austin or Houston, you can't really have a small bore thumper. It takes an hour to just get from one side of the city to the other, another 30 minutes to see countryside or dirt.

@@TexasLeverGunner yea your right I just wasn't sure if you were aware about the different models of the tiger I myself just bought a tiger 800 XRt , I live in the north of England and I would assume the riding would be totally different than from were you are from. i can ride 10 minutes and be surrounded by farms another 20 mins and be in the Yorkshire dales national park, I do have a question though. touring is a massive deal over here because there are so many different countries packed into Europe, is touring not as popular in the US.

@@sirspectrum6865 The XRt is great, and when I bought my roadie I strongly considered it. In the end I couldn't justify the 21" front as most of our roads within 200-300mi of me are just poorly paved roads that haven't had repairs in 20-30 years, or gravel. You're right, it is a lot different where you live. I used to watch svengalie (RIP) when he was still with us, and you guys have an amazing trail system over there I guess you call "byways"? I envied it then and I envy it now! Touring is a really big deal here. You just have to keep in mind that motorcyclists make up roughly 3% of the US population. We just don't have as many motorcyclists here as you guys have in Europe, but amongst the motorcycling community, touring is a real big thing.

The trick to make the DRZ 400 a better bike is a FMF full exhaust and Kiehin carb. Will feel like a completely different bike. And a Corbin seat will extend how long you can ride

Two months ago I bought my very first Motorcycle... I chose the BMW F850 GS adventure and couldn't be happier, I'm tall enough to plant both feet completely on the ground so I don't struggle that much the weight (you just feel it while slow speed maneuvering) and I come from a Mountain bike background in Baja so there's a lot of trails to enjoy on my bike.

Love your work, Spite! I think you’re absolutely right, that ADV bikes are excellent fun and will take you to the trails as well as on them. But here’s the thing - if you haven’t ridden on dirt before, an ADV bike is not a good place to start. A GSanamerica is not dirt’s turbo busa-it’s definitely not! And unless they’re called Boorman or McGregor, anyone you speak to about riding actual distance on all terrains will favour lighter bikes.

I have 2 bikes a TW200 and a VStrom 650. Love them both to death. The 650 crunches highway miles way better than you suggested. Ive done several trips from Atlanta to Nashville and it's been fantastic. Sure it's not a cruiser or an fjr but it's still more than enough for running an hour up the road to the mountains. My tw is for the muddy days close to my house or trailering to the mountains

I have a Duke 390 and it's basically a slightly scaled down version of that bike and I rode it 80 miles on freeway, 30 miles highways, 60 miles over a mountain range and came out at the Oregon coast and than rode another 120 miles on highways and backroads back to Roseburg. I didn't need extra gas and I'm a 60 year old crippled up man. The only limitations that bike has is the people that ride it.

Adventure bikes are appealing in many ways and not for their minimal offroad capabilities. Much more comfortable for longer cruising than any sport bike or dual sport. Handling and performance closer to sport bike at prudent street speeds. Lighter and better performance than most cruisers or touring bikes yet can stil.comfortably carry a passenger plus gear. Better suspension and tires for rough road or fire road riding.

As demonstrated in the video. Your physical condition will help you the most in riding off road or even on-road with any bike. I have done all day rides on pavement with my buddy on his Ninja 1000SX on my WR250R. Good core strength gives you the endurance so you are just fine doing all that seat time with no wind protection. On the flip side, muscling a larger adventure bike off road is so much easier when you have cardio and strength to back it up. Plus you will need the strength to pick up the bike when you go down.

I love my Scrambler 1200xe, it is a little big, but with a better than stock tire, it can go a lot of places and its not to heavy to get it turned around on the hills or in the mud.

My KLR650 with a 16 tooth sprocket cruises on the highway no problem and takes me off road no problem. Yeah I had to add a lot of technology to it but I don’t cry when I drop it. But I get having a bigger adventure bike would be nice. Personally paying $20k+ for a motorcycle is a deal breaker for me. I don’t finance vehicles.

I’ve been taking my R1200GSA to some gnarly places and it performs amazingly well. Only issue is short tricky embankments or scree where traction control kills momentum. Otherwise they make average riders great (which equals more fun!!).

The key to getting the most out of an adventure bike offroad is getting super comfortable balance on the pegs. (a MX skill) When you can let them move under you, it is flat shocking where one of those big bikes will take you. A good steering stabilizer is also your friend.

Very important tip : some people are really stupid and hate motorcycles going on trails because it's " annoying " them , even though you're legally allowed to go on those trails as long as it's not private property , so what they do is set up wires on those trails thinking it will stop riders from going there . What would really happen though , a guy or kid be riding his dirt bike or adv , doesn't notice the wire and next thing you see is a headless rider . So be safe out there , stay sharp and keep your eyes open for traps set up by crazy people who have a boring life and they don't want others to enjoy theirs .

Have to be honest, I have been toying with the idea of swapping my 2020 Husky 701 Sumo for the new Husky Norden 901. I think the Norden would better line up with the kind of riding I normally do and with the cross country travel plans I have in mind.

im actually considering the 701 as a commuting hooligan adv explorer. lol sporty enough for canyons, hop up and down curbs and hit a fire road here and there. then back to commuting duties during the week.

Thanks Yammie Noob, nice vid. A nice spanking new Africa Twin is the answer! Torque where it is needed and not sacrificed for the purpose of unnecessary high end superbike-like power. May be the perfect bike. Can run with the best on the trail and cruise ALL day long with a passenger AND luggage at 120 - 140 kph (75 - 85 mph) all day long and into the night. Best looking so-called 'ADV' bike too. I view it as a 'big trailbike' like they did in the 70s. I currently ride a 2014 Multistrada but the unreliability and iffy quality is getting very old. I need that wonderful Japanese Honda reliability & quality again in my life, me thinks 🙂 Yep, I'll do with less top end power which I rarely use on the road. DCT has this Africa Twin moving as quick or quicker than any Multistrada around town (real world use) - and MUCH smoother for the passenger. Can hardly wait!

I currently own a 2019 Kawasaki Z650, but I'm considering either a Yamaha TW 200 or a Triumph Tiger 900 GT Low for a second bike. I'm mostly leaning on the Triumph Tiger though.

1) it’s called a “two-track” because there are two tracks. 2) since you passed a power line pole every 100 feet, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it’s a “power line road” put in for line maintenance by the utility. 3) your super-moto is geared UP, not down. If it was geared down it would have a top end of like 50 mph.

I agree that your wrong. Of course if you mostly ride the freeways, it's not going to be best choice for that...dah! But what it does do, is open up a lot more options and opportunities for urban adventure and mountain roads. The biggest problem with DRZ is fuel range and that can be remedied by packing extra fuel and that's not a hard thing to do.

I'm amazed its that bad, my enduro 250 (generic honda clone) made 90 mpg WOT trying to burn fuel (would still do about 65 mph on gravel roads), and if you needed fuel economy driving slower then you could make 108 mpg with 2 people riding it. With its 3 gallon tank, you could easily do 250+ miles driving like mad doing stoppies and drifts every turn, then pull a wheelie taking off again, slap a similar sized fuel tank on it and you'd be making 400 miles especially on a highway. I'm not sure how it could make such little fuel economy on his, but maybe he's referring to off-road only.

I have a Gsxr 1000 and the xr650 supermoto and when people come to visit I let them ride the Gsxr... I love the speed and the power but it's so much fun to go off into the trails or exploring off the highway

Takes out big life insurance on all friends: Hey guys, I got a little turbo busa you can borrow! Never ridden before? That's fine, its a good beginner bike, remember if you're going too fast twist harder. Actually that reminds me, my uncle at one point (fixes a lot of motorcycles for free), got a deal on one and the throttle was backwards (whoever owned it before was weird I guess), so you had to twist opposite. As he was approaching a stop sign naturally letting it forward it was accelerating, so he moved more to slow it down and was slamming on the old drum brakes for dear life. I don't remember if he crashed it/or kill switch or what happened, but either way I'm sure that throttle was the first thing he corrected driving that back, haha!

a drz400e works well for me in Australia, since I can get to many fun dirt places after only doing 80kmh (50mph), or stretching it to 110kmh (65mph), nowhere near the high revving 75/80 mph. I live in the middle of Sydney, too, so I have to travel

The offroad performance depends not just on the bike but on the tires as well - maybe even more so. But there are no tires that perform well in sticky mud as well as on the tarmac. Adv bikes are harder to pick up (which you will likely be doing quite often off the road) and there's more to break when they fall but while they're going, an adv with offroad tires might even perform better than dual sport with hybrid ones, doubly so because most adv bikes are more expensive so they have better components such as the suspension etc. And if you really need the offroad performance, you're better off with a dirt bike which is lighter, generally has better suspension and better engine response.

It looks a little ridiculous having the DRZ400sm stuck up a hill but those tires really suck offroad. I feel you... disliked the small gas tank, too frequent fill ups. Got saddle burn due to seat on a one day 650 km loop - Timiskaming Loop Northern Ontario. Needless to say changed something more appropriate to my style of riding - Ninja 650 sport/touring which is ok but looking for the ideal ADV bike... suggestions?

Bit of a weird video concept, let's disparage dual sports while riding around on one. Would you rather have been stuck up the middle of that hill around the 18th minute mark on the bike you were on or a gs1200? You would rather be on a monstrous dual sport in the sand rather than say a tw200? It's just a weird way to make a point.

I used to be strongly "against"(?) Adventure bikes. Just never liked the look. Until last season. With my aging body, I needed a comfortable ride. I bought a Honda CB500X and I've never had so much on 2 wheels!! Especially in a sub 500cc motorcycle!! I'm gonna keep this bike for a long time and when I do upgrade, it'll be for another adventure bike. Maybe a Tiger 800.

If you ride interstate highways, get an ADV bike. If torn between an ADV and dual sport, get a small 300cc to 400cc ADV bike. They're in their own niche. Small and maneuverable to be most of a dual sport off road, but comfortable on the road and able to ride at interstate speeds almost as well as a big ADV bike. Love my G310GS. Small ADV bikes are also great for older riders who can no longer comfortably muscle a big bike, allowing them to ride into their 70s or 80s.

I got a Tenere 700 it’s an amazing ADV bike that won’t destroy your bank account! One of my most favorite bikes I’ve ever owned and I’ve had WR250R, 16 Yamaha R1 and 15 Superduke 1290r!currently have a 17 FZ10 as well and I always choose to ride the T7 over the FZ10! The T7 does everything I’d could ask for from a street bike perspective! And having a bike that could go anywhere makes even more fun! You see side roads or trails always tempting to explore! Guess a dual sport vs ADV I would say it all depends on how far you live from off-roading trails and what type of bike you need to ride those trails! I’ve seen some pretty insane riding of people taking the T7 to some tight single track trails it is possible!

Hah I've a Tracer 900GT and a T7 myself now and find myself wanting to ride the T7 a lot more as well. Yeah, it's a lot slower, and lacks the tech. The Tracer is better if I'm gonna really get my zoom on in twisty mountain roads and want to go really fast... But the T7 is happy on the edge of the tire over 100mph too. It is, at heart, an MT07/R7 CP2 platform bike. But the T7 is super nimble, simple, tall - it's a far better commuter bike than I expected it to be. You've got excellent visibility, more than enough power for regular (even aggressive) street riding, and lots of down low torque. If I could only have one of them, 10 of 10 times I'd pick the T7.

Off road is also fun, one of the joys of owning a bike is that you can almost go anywhere so I say this is a very pleasant video but am I convinced? No! Adventure bikes are not only costly but they require a lot of skill, that said I do fancy those smaller advs like that GS 300 then there is the Kawasaki V300 and I think that Suzuki has one too but they cost.

back roads and gravel are what it's all about for dual sports anyway. tons of the good stuff here in the west, unlike Texas 🤢 hop between national forests, small towns you'd never see otherwise, camp wherever you want, point your bike wherever you want and you'll get there. small bikes have more fun ;)

Whichever manufacturer makes a modern drz400(6 speed, lightweight, bulletproof, efi,simple and affordable) will make bank. Maybe bump it to 500cc, but keep it lightweight and simple. Not high strung/maintenance intensive.
