It was Advance Wars sudden popularity which showed Intelligent systems other popular turned based strategy game, Fire Emblem, would have an audience outside of Japan.

Intelligent systems needs to make like infinity more of both games. Also, despite the fact that DoR was the most balanced, I liked the art style of the first 3. It's just something about the cartoonish lightheartedness charm that made them so great. DoR was missed that trying to be dark.

I did like the soundtrack to Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict, but looking back, I don't really care about the characters in the same way I did about the CO's in the previous games. If you mention Advance Wars to me, the first things I think of are Tough sluggers like Jess, Grit's nasty Super powers, and the Black Hole Super Power theme. They did add some neat stuff to DoR, but I felt removing the CO powers from the previous games seemed to make unwinnable multiplayer matches drag on far longer than they should have. I had more DoR games won by my opponent getting bored or the battery running out than actually winning. At least keeping a Tag power up your sleeve could turn the game around, that's for sure. Still, I thought they were all good games in their own right. :)

I'm also glad it introduced me to the Fire Emblem series. I bought my Gameboy Advance to play Advance Wars, and the respect I gained for Intelligent Systems from that led me to buy a DS for Dual Strike and a 3DS for Fire Emblem: Awakening. This particular company on reflection has convinced me to cough up the cash for more consoles than any other company.

Iain Cousins I know. There have really only been 3 series that have ever convinced me to buy a system. Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, and Golden Sun. It's funny that all 3 are on the handhelds. I count pokemon as 3.5 since I already had the system prior to the pokemon game coming out but if I didn't I would have. And yeah. I feel pretty much the same about DoR. The multiplayer was balanced, but you end up with those stalemates which are boring. The chaos and unbalancedness is what made Advanced Wars so great. I was fairly attached to the characters, though the story and the dark tone made it feel like I wasn't playing AW any more. But yeah, all great games. But the first 3, simply because they didn't build the game around a balanced multiplayer, are the stronger ones in the series. I liked that the first 3 focused on fun, vs. making the game competitive online.

Nintendo is literally letting this series fade away... They can do so much with this franchise. Give FE a rest a bit and bring back this beloved series. There’s so much in terms of gameplay, story, characters, music, and overall charm in this. Days of Ruin was bit too serious for me but it was still fun to play. @@Freedmoon44 tbf Sturm (in AW2) has like a really huge boost in atk and def when you do his meteor strike, nearly at the level of samurai spirit, so he already has the broken units for his turn. He gets a mocking 150% atk and 140% def units that are simply nearly impossible to kill Rachel goes first to deal maximum damage, then sturm goes and deals the meteor and create a big push with his ability to traverse through terrain ,and with his kanbei levels of units that can demolish anything.

True they can't go too far from the nearest carrier, or APC, but to be able to attack literally every unit in the game, sans submerged submarine, with impunity while stealthed (minus enemy fighters being the only things that can attack/retaliate against stealthed fighters) for great damage... that was a bit much in my book.
