On City-Skipping: If there is a City within 3-Range of your base, and there is a City within 6-Range of your base, skipping the 3 range base to get the 6 range base only leads to a temporary income disadvantage. If you take the nearby city first, and then send another infantry on a 2 turn journey (and ultimatively a 3 turn capture) for the second city, by the day you first gain income from that city, your income is the same as the income of the city-skipper. The city skipper instead of starting to capture now, starts capturing 2 properties at once next turn, and by the time it is done, the next day the total funds are identical. I didn't do the full math to see if there is an excuse for cityskipping to a 3-days away city or the like, but the 2-days away property rush results in exactly the same funds at day 4 (counting from day 1), at which point combat is unlikely to have happened yet anyway. In fact, one could speak of a potential, if situational, advantage to the city-skipper here, because on day 4 he gets to move both infantry, while the non-skipper needs to use the second infantry to finish the capture, though the first infantry got to move twice compared to the skippers first infantry's once. P.s.: This works because the conventienal approach takes the first city in 2 days but the second city in 4 days, while the skipper takes both cities in 3 days. The city skipper winds up in a slightly better position, provided no immediate counter needed to be build from missing funds, while mitigating the 1000 lost on day 3 with and extra 1000 gained on day 4. Provided successful capture of the cities is assured, this approach is always applicable, if the point of origin of the capturing infantry is the base that produced it, no matter the game time. With skipping, after 4 days, total funds gained are equal to the non-skipper. This also applies if you have 2 infantries near each other, one that can reach a city now, and one that can't, but the first Infantry could target to reach a farther away city to start capturing next turn, while the second starts capturing the city skipped by the first one next turn. Again, provided the area is uncontested (usually early mid-game at some edges of the map), The 1000 funds disadvantage 2 days later is mitigated by a 1000 funds extra gain 3 days later. EDIT: Just confirmed that the same logic applies if city 1 is 2 turns away and city 2 is 3 turns away, though it takes until day 6 until both approaches lead to the same fund-total, with the temporary 1000 fund disadvantage sitting on day 5 for the skipper. EDIT: After doing some more calculating, I want to correct mangs here on the claim that the Skipper lost 1000 funds multiple times going for that corner city in the upper right. While I won't go in detail here, ignoring inoptimal play afterwards, what was lost is not 1000funds x turns yada yada, what was lost was 1000 funds once, meaning, for an expected fundtotal at the end of the match of 100.000, you will have a 99.000. And the only reason that this happens in this case is, that there is not just a city 2 turns away, and a city 3 turns away, there are in fact multiple cities reachable in 2 turns, so ignoring one of those for the benefit of capturing a 3-turn far city is a total net loss of 1000 funds, or one infantry, over the course of the match.

I appreciate how Mangs has grown as a competitive player. I still remember when Mangs loved to open with early recon and would ignore the no-go zones in his earlier matches. Analysis from a Third Party 1:10 I suspect Klok only started after I mentioned reaching 1000 elo overall, majority of the matches played are in standard. Like most beginners and me initially, I believe the impression they got was that elo is easy to earn. If only they knew... (I struggled for a bit before putting together ideas that worked) 2:56 Strikethrough. Played a match here and there are some parts of the map that you must do in order to win. Here, breaking the pipe seam is a must. Kantbei recommends you do it with your first B Copter, and although it is a strong enemy tell, I argue it is worth it for speeding up reinforcements by one turn. 6:36 You won't be punished as easily for this in fog until later, but an experienced fog player who sees you reaching the comm tower early will know their funding curves enough to sense weakness when they spot this. As noted later on, rushing for contested properties does not make them easier to defend (in fact they are often harder to defend as giving up the early income will deprive the build tempo needed to get your tanks and additional infantry). 7:28 Would prefer the capture path of city airport to airport city here. Income is better and you will still get airport when you need it. 12:56 At around this level, I do see this a fair bit, using recon to harrass infantry early on expecting your opponent to open recon. I often punish this by opening tank instead, keep it waiting somewhere and reinforcing my infantry, and then punishing when I see the recon because of infantry defence and space counting. This gained me the tempo to win all but one match in the 800s, and most likely will work in the 700s. (On a more serious note, open recon can work if you know what to do with that recon and your overall gameplan) 15:52 (with hindsight from 17:41) Normally not that well advised. Even with a sonja recon, a tank can still have hiding spots. The infantry is still free at this point, but if he attacked from the south or the west, he might get away with it. 16:35 Not the right timing for a transport. It is either something you open with or something you establish later on once you establish map or unit advantage. Tank on that side would be better since you know that is the enemy recon side. + Tank Chain to back up any tank hit. (mentioned somewhat at 20:24) 18:11 Made this mistake myself a few times, often it is to get vision, but infantry has two vision (Sonja has three), so actually we could position one (or two for Sonja) space back and get an idea of what is on that property without being unfavourably first striked. (Ah wait, you already explained this) 19:07 Pretty sound advice. Although if your opponent does follow up with a tank, at this point you can safely take one to two pot shots on the other side of the map provided you capture gamed safely. Again, funding curves. (Not in this case though, I am not surprised if they went two tank here) (Note to 20:12 - Recon is not free btw, now that the tank is very much there.) 21:19 I also missed this city until Day 10 in my own game here, and only got it capped on Day 13 by incurring a brief tempo pause. That can trip you up if you do not plan for it. (29:48 The City is still not captured, 34:19 Finally went for it. Scheduled for a D14 capture) 22:15 Suspect he might be trying to call his opponent's bluff here with his split up tanks, but sound opponents will back up their tanks. 22:59 About comm towers, I had games where I lost my comm tower to my opponent (I won all of them by the way). Facing an opponent with 20% more firepower than you can hurt a lot more and either getting or preventing that is why beginners go for the comm towers. (To compensate for poorer tactical skill) What I do instead is to prioritise income because they wasted 4 infantry turns on 1 - 2 units to try to cap it, sometimes more, and then find good engagements to take, or just hold the line. Because 20% firepower advantage over you does not save you in all situations, and I can generate unit mixes that my opponent cannot counter. 23:25 Two recons on the same side is a pretty good opportunity to pull the tank back if you are weak there. On the other hand, that is a free 4 HP Recon over there if you can position the tank right. (26:20 - Yep, he took it and positioned it right based on sighted and potential unsighted tanks.) 24:35 THREE RECONS? That is two tanks the opponent does not have. It could have been prevented, but Klok will need to forgo that capture to do so. (Given prior decisions, this is a better decision) By this point, tank would have overextended in my opinion. 26:45 No comment here. 29:06 OK, this is an unusual play, I would consider B Copter to smash this pipe seam so that we can hold the center but I won't fault this move if he was ahead. 30:14 Arty party, except he is gonna lose the match this way. 31:38 It is very tempting to attack what is in your vision, but this is why it is better to scout first and understand your areas, more so if you are Sonja. 32:58 My literal dream scenario - I think by this point, I should be suspecting hidden armour in there somewhere. 35:13 Teching up at this stage.... Double edged sword. It can either be win faster or lose faster. Looking at this situation, Klok needs unit count and a B Copter could have helped more here. 35:57 Agree with you here, revealing AA to take infantry is dubious even if the AA does not get punished. 37:00 My guess is the opponent is feeling good about the KD Ratio. 38:03 Counter Break would not have been super impactful for Klok either way. Even if it disincentivises a push, the opponent can pull back and regroup as he sees the Arty. (38:39, which they did, somewhat. If he is then bringing out a tank, I should expect Anti Air or something.) 38:49 Arty yolo 700 elo edition. 39:20 And that's the end, and the bomber did nothing but just moved around.

I figured out playing Days of Ruin where missiles have 6 range, covering missiles with other missiles makes punishing a push from air units much easier. The AI in that game likes to make pushes with air units, which with a little preparation are easy to pick apart. They should also be spaced outside each other's minimum ranges. Two missiles cover a LOT of air. Anyway, the point is, I hadn't considered this about tanks! Note for the future, and I'll consider what other units can cover my tanks.

I think more low elo games would be a good idea. I feel like most fan casters for competitive games usually have a series of low elo games they cast. As it's a really good way to point out common mistakes and how to play better, I think it makes for a really good resource. Plus sometimes if you're looking at low elo games in the wild you can just find some wild stuff, people doing crazy out there tactics, which is also a really fun way to look at the game. Not just the people who really know what they're doing. Obviously I'd never want the high level commentaries to stop, but I think low level stuff can be just as fun and even more valuble for players looking to learn.

Hi Mangs, I believe, I have to disagree with your baseskip statement in this case. The baseskip allowes the early Com-tower, and this gives the the reccon enough firepower to slow down the capture in the bottom area 1 additional turn. On a money decission I believe he hurts his enemy more, than he has lost. And on this way he ends up with an comtower advantage in the early battles. I personaly liked the skip.

27:45 Klok could’ve reviewed the turn history to see the enemy Tank on the HQ, move to hide in the forest next to the Comm Tower. The enemy pulled it back next turn, which you also missed. 35:12 Klok had to base skip to build a bomber, which you missed. You frequently pointed out how enemy HP is hidden, but in a match against Sonja, you can use the calculator to deduce how much HP the opponent has based on the damage you do to the enemy unit. In the GBA games this would take fuel, but AWBW bypasses the fuel reduction for fog movement.

8:25: Is it better to have a recon to scout/harass? You know they will have a tank to chase off the recon. Why not follow up with a tank to counter punch the tank that ends up hitting your recon. Follow up depends on how the scenario works out, wither the recon can continue scouting for you, and do you need to follow up the tank with another tank. I would say even before any of this, you have to consider the the apc and when to use it. It's all about timing when to construct the apc. When you make you apc will dictate how efficient it is. 1st job is effecient capture game. High income will get you into tanks alot quicker, allowing you to begin a strong side. A side, potentially, with a apc, masses of infantry where you need then to cap and smart engage the enemy. There is so much in fundamentals inside this game. What it comes down to is piece harmony, just like in chess. You never want to win a pyrrhic victory. Sacking units to cap an hq is as close to sacing units to checkmate a king. capping a factory or airport is the same as not allowing the enemy to keep making queens, which is pretty much over if every turn you can spam pieces.

*Mangs features a match you're in* Fan: OH MY GOD! He featured a match of mine, this is awesome! *Mangs calls the match a NOOB GAME* Fan: ..... (emotional damage incurred, -10 HP) Jokes aside, this is nice for the newer players. Maybe after 1 or 2 more low MMR game analyses, do 1 or more intermediary MMR game analyses (around 1,000 to 1,200 MMR)? That way you can show to the newer players what the learning curve is like and what to expect as you climb higher in rating.

Hey Mangs I just started playing in my adult life and I have a match that has lasted almost 100 turns its just about over. IT was my first match i started and i had started watching your videos. I did a big nono and didn't monopolize on the rewards for attacking instead made an ifrastructure and focused healing using Sasha. Its a funny match this guy was probably beating his head off the wall i would love to send it to you.

While talking about the no-go zone you referenced a video from someone else, which makes me ask: are there any good channels out there I can binge to get a better understanding of the underlying rules/strats of this game? Btw if it doesn't exist yet you should consider doing it, there is a demand
