They are great because the only good counter to the bomber is the fighter which is useless against ground units meaning they have a unit worth 20,000 which is useless.

Ironically Sonja is one of the only CO's capable of making bomber vs anti-air an unfavorable engagement for the bomber thanks to her superpower

Works with sending in bombers too, attacking her bombers during her SCOP with anti air will result in a full hp bomber and a dead AA

the Custom CO Spec from Mangs own contest makes AA vs Bomber complete bullshit due to him having the same ability as Sonja but day to day and only 50% firepower, but still would make an AA take 42.5% dmg before attacking a Bomber, greatly decreasing their effectiveness as a counter.

Kanbei's Anti Air on his superpower are also pretty safe from bombers. Eagle bombers might get some millage out of attacking a 7 HP Kanbei AA not on a city if he can make sure the AA won't come make an effective retaliation on Kanbei's turn, but anyone else just gets wrecked on the counterattack. If Eagle has a tank and bomber and Kanbei has no mech, bomber, fighter, or indirect nearby starting the attack with the tank (reducing it's HP) and then following with the bomber on the AA can make Eagle come out positive this turn. But then Kanbei has his turn... unless Eagle has Lightning Strike. If Eagle has his lightning strike right after Kanbei's Samurai Spirit, and the bomber can only attack the Anti Air or infantry on its first move, he still comes out positive attacking the Anti Air (assuming not on property) on the first move, assuming you can weaken it with a tank or something, and then an artillery on the second move. Cities pretty much mean he only takes 10% damage, so almost nothing is even worth it at that point unless you're suiciding units to charge up your CO meter. And that would be dumb since why would you want to use something like Max Blast, Overdrive, or Hyperrepair when Kanbei has his super power up?

Even when hit by antiair, a 3hp bomber can still be a wall to most units in the game, will take nice chunks out of vehicles, and can interrupt caps.

You forgot to mention that flak is really good with bombers as he turns them into indirect bombers, same with battleships as he can make them spawn in tiny lakes.

To be fair, even thought a 3-2 HP bomber can be an annoyance, a relatively cheap Anti-Air taking off a huge chunk of an expensive Bomber can still be cost-effective. I think that’s what they were going for at least.

Yeah, but Anti -Airs are only 8 mana, whereas Bombers are 22 mana. So if the Anti-Airs get a first strike in, it's still worth it cost-wise.

you'd be surprised how a fighter that have no target is still useful,it serves as a roadblock that can't be oneshot by a single AA at the cost of a lot of power charge,and they can enable you to make bombers of your own and have a fighter to contest ennemy fighters with

The Devastator, the Obliterator, the Annihilator, the Ravager, the Pancaker, the Cratermaker, the screaming nightmare of ground troops and the harbinger of heaven's divine wrath has arrived. The bomber is an interesting unit because its price makes it something of a niche unit, but one with an extremely broad and powerful usage. Like the infantry, tank, anti-air, B copter, and medium tank, it is something that must always be planned for, but unlike those units, it isn't always present. Supreme Commander has a class of units called "game-enders"- nuke subs/silos, giant artillery cannons, and a few special units designed to break the game in return for their obscene resource commitments- and while it isn't as extreme as these, I think it's reasonable to consider the bomber as an Advance Wars equivalent. Like Supcom's game-enders, many matches will end long before one can even consider building a bomber, but it serves as a sort of ultimate doomsday weapon to decide the outcome of the game one way or another. If you build a bomber and it gets to do its job, you win. If the bomber is successfully countered, the you'll be at a crippling resource deficit and you'll lose. Either way, it represents the limits of what a player can do in the game and creates tense situations that inherently make it an exciting unit when it's in play. *(I would also say that the same principle applies to the megatank, but the bomber is both more common and more useable)* Given how powerful the bombers are in-game, it makes me wonder how differently the story would have played out if Sturm had just cranked out tons of conventional units instead of dumping resources into the overpriced dumpster that was the death ray. What if the nations had shown up at Black Hole HQ and a bazillion bombers came out of the clouds? They would have been turned into guacamole before Andy could ask what an airport is.

This is why the unit balance of Days of Ruin. For example, Dusters add a more cheaper option to take out bombers and battle copters that also have a good range and can also engage infantry.

Bombers. Boom boom boom. Apparently are indirects via Flak. OS has B-52 but with only four engines instead of eight. BM has Avro Vulcan but that plane is delta-wing aircraft. GE has Hawker Siddeley Nimrod, which irl is a maritime patrol aircraft. YC has a mix of B-17 and G4M but with jet engines.

Always loved the bomber. The end game finisher. They can crush walls that would normally stonewall you. They are invincible to a lot of enemies so as long as you can shoo away AA with tanks, they are pretty much uncontested. Even a lone AA can be tackled due to their mobility.

I love bombers. When I reach the late-game as Colin and have that massive 100K+ fortune with 50K every other turn a swarm of bombers combined with a push of neo-tanks just flood the map and obliterate everything.

@@Mangs1337 I do think the mistake most make is going in right away. With Colin the key is building up that fortune. I always try to keep in mind my fortune and make sure it climbs with every "gold rush" I use. In the first couple of times you need to be very economical and actually be very protective of your units.

@@ninjaexperto7217 Yeah, Colin's normal power is a relative increase so once the fortune is up your bases really are the limited factor. So why not just spam bombers instead of battlecopters?

This is a good series, but it seems to have halted. If you still want to continue, how about we see the Anti-Air next? It's my favorite unit, and people tend to ignore how it stands up against ground vehicles.

I love bombers. The only bad thing is that they're pretty impractical in early to mid game. But there''s nothing more delicious than obliterating a lot of hapless smucks on the ground and sea. Specially the anti airs since I like to use scissors to cut the rock. >:D

A grand total of 4 units can even target the bomber, and of those only 2 can kill it in one hit. Its survivability alone would make it an amazing unit, but it also OHKO's most units. In short, the only thing better than a Bomber is a Stealth Bomber. Or two Bombers.

Ah yes, the bomber The mere presence of one mean that the enemy must spend resources to deal with it. Anti-air is the most cost-effective counter, as 2 units (16000) can easily destroy a 22000 unit. But that means building an unit that has little versatility, as it can only fight air units and infantry effectivelly, Worse is the case with missiles, cruisers and the only other option would be the fighter, which is still very expensive, but can zone out any other air units. If the enemy lets the bomber roam about, it would mean 9 units destroyed or crippled, which is devastating. The main benefit is the lack of counter attack, if you put this thing where there are tanks and no anti airs, you will always attack at full force. whereas if you put a Neotank, it will slowly get damaged, samething to a megatank. All options could be cost effective, but the bomber could just resupply and keep going unscathed. take care of it, and it will take care of you(r enemies) In DoR, it received some changes, It is more durable, as it can now tank fighters (interceptors in this game) missiles, take a little bit less damage from anti air. But are still wrecked by missiles and now they have 2 new rivals and a new nemesis. The first rival would be the duster, as it can too attack ground units, but just using its machine gun, and can do moderate damage to air units, these thing now prey upon bombers, but can become escorts too. Then there is the seaplane, which comes from the aircraft carrier, powerful attack, low range and reserves. And finally, the cruiser...a laughable unit in the previous 3 games, but a force to recon with in this game. Now it deals 100% damage to any and all air units at full health, costing just 16000 and getting its defenses to sky high. Now the waters are not safe for air units. Still the bomber received another minor buff in getting it´s cost down to 20000...at the cost of carrying 5 bombs. That infantry better be worth it.

I think even if the bomber gets the first strike on a DoR cruiser it's not a good matchup considering the enormous defense boost it received against air units, only dealing about 60% or so i think, so in the end the cruiser will take out a sizeable chunk out of your bomber's health in its counterattack and if it has good luck it could even beat the bomber by itself in the following turns.

Anti air is very versatile, it's a viable threat to everything except tanks and ships. It can even be used to finish off weak tanks or other AA, and wins against mechs if you strike first. It is the perfect addition to any area you use a tank, since it can deal with most tank counters, and finish off weak units if needed.

@@LopsidedMoz I understand what you are saying, but I do not fully agree. In an airportless map, you would not see this unit build in high numbers or at all Why? Because it would be effective against 3 units, whereas a tank could cripple any infantry unit type, and hit many more units quite hard. True, an aa unit will wipe out any infantry unit on open plains, but a tank will do about 70%, and a infantry unit out open is most of the time a non threat. The threat comes when they are capturing, where an aa unit will not be able to destroy it in one attack, requiring at least 2 attacks, which the tank could also do...even a recon unit or a flare unit. There are uses for aa units in airportless maps, yes specially when the opponent does a mech rush, but most of the time it is better to stick to the ol'reliable tank we all know and love

@@LopsidedMoz precisely my point. A tank is useful in all maps, whether there are airports, ports, or just bases. Anti air is useful only in maps where you are expected to encounter air units. And then if it is an island map, you are better off with a cruiser or a duster. (In DoR of course). Nonetheless the aa unit makes foes think twice before engaging combat, specially if you conceal them

Personally, I'd like to see some (mostly cheaper) alternatives to the bomber (to supplement the Bomber, which would've probably become this expensive all-purpose anti-surface air unit with good survivability against anti-air, and plenty of bombs to spare), such as the following: - A CAS, or Close Air Support (like the A-10 Thunderbolt or Su-25 Frogfoot (btw, Green Earth could've used some different units to represent their Fighters, like the Saab Viggen for example), or alternatively, WW2-era dive bombers like the German Ju-87 Stuka, or the Hawker Hurricane), that would be primarily designed for combat against land units, and would, admittedly, probably function similarly to the Battle Copter, only with the following differences: -- being a high-flying air unit, like the Fighter and Bomber -- being incapable of attacking other air units, including copters -- being quite strong against most land units, yet not as strong against them as the Bomber, such as one-shotting footsoldiers, nearly one-shotting lightly-armored vehicles like recons, artillery, rockets, and missiles, doing strong damage against light tanks and anti-air (like, say, around 70% damage), doing modest damage against medium tanks and neo tanks (around 35-45% damage), and doing little damage against mega tanks -- being about as ineffective against naval units as tanks (with another unit design idea suggested below for that purpose) -- being extremely vulnerable to not only fighters and missiles (whom would've probably overkilled them), but also anti-air, cruisers, and DoR dusters (all of which might one-shot a CAS if at full health), since they'd be smaller and less armored than the bomber -- having a small ammo supply for their bombs (around 3-4 for example), necessitating more frequent resupply runs -- having a movement speed of 8 (as opposed to 7 for the Bombers, or 6 for the Battle Copters) -- and finally, costing around 12000-14000 per unit in order to make them not only more expensive than the Battle Copter, but also a little more expensive than half of a Bomber - A Torpedo Bomber (like the Japanese Nakajima B5M or the U.S. Douglas TBD Devastator) that would be primarily designed for combat against naval units, with the following traits: -- being a high-flying air unit, like the Fighter and Bomber -- being incapable of attacking other air units, including copters -- being incapable of attacking land units -- being quite strong against naval units, though not as much as the Bomber, dealing around 70-75% damage against subs, cruisers, and landers, and around 50% damage against battleships, thanks to their usage of homing torpedoes that are equipped with their own sonar systems (which would even allow them to attack submerged subs) -- being extremely vulnerable to not only fighters and missiles (whom would've probably overkilled them), but also anti-air, cruisers, and DoR dusters (all of which might one-shot a Torpedo Bomber if at full health), since they'd be smaller and less armored than the bomber -- having a small ammo supply for their torpedoes (around 2-3 for example), necessitating more frequent resupply runs -- having a movement speed of 8 (as opposed to 7 for the Bombers, or 6 for the Battle Copters) -- and finally, costing around 10000 per unit in order to make them not only more expensive than the Battle Copter, but also slightly less expensive than half of a Bomber - A Striker, essentially an indirect bomber, armed primarily with standoff weapons (like the AGM-158 JASSM) for attacking anti-air units from longer distances, with the following traits: -- being a high-flying air unit, like the Fighter and Bomber -- being incapable of attacking other air units, including copters -- being decently strong against both land and naval units (akin to artillery or missiles), though not normally nearly capable of one-shotting any kinds of units, usually doing no more than 65% damage against most ground units (including anti-air, tanks, artillery, and even infantry), 40% damage against heavily-armored land and naval units, and 25% damage against battleships and mega tanks -- possessing a direct attack range of 2-3 to allow them to attack anti-air without fear of return fire, though leaving them largely incapable of returning fire if they themselves come under fire -- being extremely vulnerable to not only fighters and missiles (whom would've probably overkilled them), but also anti-air, cruisers, and DoR dusters (all of which might one-shot a Striker if at full health), since they'd be smaller and less armored than the bomber -- having a small ammo supply for their standoff missiles (around 2-3 for example), necessitating more frequent resupply runs -- having a movement speed of 7 (much like the Bomber) to better allow fighters to close the distance towards them -- and finally, costing around 18000 or more per unit in order to make them pretty pricey for being essentially indirect bombers

I like the CAS idea if you want to keep it modern theme I would go Orange Star: A-10 Tunderbolt Blue Moon: Su-25 Frogfoot Yellow Comet: Mitsubishi F-1 Green Earth: British Aerospace Harrier II Black Hole: This one is tricky considering Black Hole is going for a futuristic vibe to contrast everyone else. There are two options the first is a Reaper drone. Another choice is the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk For Bombers I would go Orange Star: B-52 Stratofortesss Blue Moon: Tupolev Tu-22M Yellow Comet: Xian H-6 (Note Japan was forbidden to develop heavy bombers after ww2, so I decided to look to China instead for a candidate for a bomber) Green Earth: Avro Vulcan Black Hole: B-2 Spirit

Because in Advance wars 1-3 naval units suck. The 4th game, Days of Ruin, improved naval units greatly, but among all the improvements I think the new art style is a miss.

Missiles are a fantastic counter to bombers because they cause massive area denial. A missile can support anti air and further enhance the coverage and denial, thus YEAH your bomber CAN kill an 8k AA, but then gets one shotted by a missile. This means you lost 22k for 8k, with a 12k investment. Putting the defender at a 2k investment advantage, -1 factory disadvantage, and 13k value advantage. All in all, quite worth it. You ALSO have to keep in mind, if the enemy goes jet counter and you transition to ground warfare… they can just… build bombers. Bombers who now have an escort and scouts. Transitioning to pure ground is a tough call.

Jets are also B copter counters which puts one of the best units out of comission. Depending on the battlefield, vital t copters are also shafted. The bomber IS GREAT and IS OP! But there are many many ways to handle it and defeat it.

I don't think anti-air is as bad of a counter as you make it out here. Bombers do well against them, yes, but only one. A single anti-air is only slightly more than a third the cost of the bomber, so if anti-air travel in pairs, you'll have a hard time making that funds exchange work out.

Yeah but it also forces another issue on your opponent. Making 2 anti-air would take two bases, while making a fighter only keeps your airport busy. If your bomber forces the enemy to build 2-3 anti-air you can easily pump out more tanks, or recons if fog. Sure you made your bomber but you could easily field infantry that turn. So even a bomber being countered by anti-air still forces your opponents hand and can give you a unit count advantage over time because those anti-air are far less likely to be nearly as impactful in a brawl scenario than tanks would be.

I'm not a fan of their power against some units even though those are edge case scenarios. if I was designing the game from scratch, I think the damage to naval units should be capped at 35% unless the attacking unit is a Neotank, Rocket, or naval unit (say a sub attacking a battleship). This doesn't make them objectively overpowered since naval units suck so much that it's not a matchup anyone will see anyways unless the winning side is just showing off because he is ahead by 6 cities and can waste all those funds (this is why I don't like turn limits, on the few times I'm winning against a human I like to do it my way). I also think their damage to Neotanks should be reduced to 30% so that the Neotank's main weaknesses are mainly Rockets and Neotanks, with the air units able to do cost effective medium damage but not demolish it. I also think that even though it makes no sense, air units except the fighter and battlecoptor should have a range of 1 vision if only to make people invest in the wheeled Recon more.

hey question, does resistance change if you capture a property? I'm gonna say no you always get 3 stars while a city whether or not you capture that or if it stays neutral though what if you're on an enemy city, would the city allow resistance?

Stars remain the same no matter what. The benefit that using an allied city gives over an enemy city is the +2 hp and ammo/gas refill every turn.

Bombers are almost perfect as is. The ONLY thing I would want to change is give it at least 1 more Movement, because it just makes no sense for an air superiority military payload vehicle to struggle to keep pace with jeeps. No bomber with hostile intent flies that slow if they mean to do a hit and run.

Fighters can't really attack a lot of units, but at least they can scout, and block the enemy, because they need Anti-Air damage to remove them. But anyway, Bombers are great, they're funny and so volatile, it's stats are pure madness.

in a map where mountain/river are common, bomber force the opponent to build fighter since you will start to need 3 to 6 A-Air (2 per side and maybe one can be in between to cover other A-Air) to zone a bomber depending the size of the map. without them 2 A-Air can zone a bomber decently well. While they are strong, I find that they don't wall break "extremely well" without a bonus. it sure deal high dmg to expensive unit (usually the reason you build them) but not that high on light unit (so less wall break potential)
