The objective here is not to fall on your back but to roll so the pressure of the fall transforms into forward motion. I agree the risk of injury is high if it is not performed properly. Better to hit the ground with the higher part of the back underneath the shoulders where there is more muscle. But that would work better with a backward roll or keeping the feet on the ground

Really very good stuff, unfortunately it is only useful to show off but nothing more. First, this is not ukemi, why? Because there is no reception of any technique by Aite (Uke) part. This is an example of just an acrobatic or "stylized" drop, executed only by Aite alone in response to nothing/no technique at all, so there is no reception and thus no ukemi. When Tori (Nage) enters in Irimi Isoku for real, a well-trained Tori will never allow you to do this kind of maneuver since it will not provide you with the minimum opening to execute it. This is because Tori in true Irimi will never let you go. By entering in Irimi Isoku the only thing an Aite would gain from trying to execute this maneuver is a broken back simply because the head is going in one direction and the rest of the body in the opposite direction, which leaves Aite's lower back uncovered. No matter how agile Aite may be, if Tori executes Irimi correctly the body will whip the ground. Of course it works very well as the video shows it, with an accommodating Tori just guiding without actually doing nothing. "Receiving" in Aikido IS NOT synonymous with "falling". There are no "falls" in Aikido, there are ukemi and ukemi is the most practical and effective way to meet Tori. How? What are the basic exercises that are practiced in Aikido over and over again? What is essential in each class to NOT injure yourself? You have to focus on the basics and delve into it (Kihon Waza), because everything you need is in the basics for real practice. No offense intended.

Aikido are efect numai contra unui adversar agresiv.
@HesteBremse6 жыл бұрын
That is not entirely factual. The problem is that many modern Aikido dojos have far less emphasis on attacking and on the openings for strikes and kicks. Also, the clear distinction between Omote and Ura are often washed out - That is in many situations ok, but as a basic understanding it is not. The Omote is far more offensive than most AIkido practitioners realize and yes you can initiate attacks with Aikido, that is if you practice the few basic Aikido attacks with strong intent. And naturally, it is a good idea to train and try out other attacks from more offensive styles - Trying out other Martial Styles was even encouraged by Ueshiba - Not unsuspected since he had a background in several other Martial Arts before he developed Aikido. But you are also not entirely wrong - The philosophical intent of AIkido is not the get involved in the Violence applied by the aggressor, that is not only meant physically but also mentally - If you are on the way to the bakery to get some bread and someone is obstructing your way, playing into the mindset of the obstructor is not fruitful for your life overall - you just want to get some Bread - That is why Aikido mainly focuses on deflection, bypassing, going to the hidden side etc. If you are about to get run over by a Truck, kicking it will not help anything, you will still be trashed. But yes Aikido is a very defensive style and the main reason it has no place in the Octagon or in other fighter to fighter situations - Anybody who proclaims it to be effective in the Martial Sport event is simply wrong - You need a bigger set of tools to do that. Aikido is sometimes also called the hidden Martial Art, because most aggressors will not expect and/or perceive what is happening. Against nearly any other skilled Martial Artist the Aikido person will soon be in trouble if he or she has not practiced additional skills, like hits, strikes and e.g low kicks and perhaps some groundfighting. Take something like Krav Maga - highly effective, to the point and very destructive - many parts of the repertoire have Jui-Jutsu in it, several very similar to Aikido. Many people also do not know that Aikido includes highly fatal techniques for breaking a person back, neck or arm in very short movements. Most Aikido shown around the internet and taught many places all over the World has sadly become a Western intellectualized version of its original roots and why it is subject to a lot of mockery. In fact not training to initiate the attack can turn into a disaster in a stalemate or build up real life defense situation - The adrenalin will pump in your body and if there are more than one agressor you will need to initiate if no other options are to escape the situation while the pressure is building. Also if Aikido still wants to be the "Art of Peace" then some Aikidokas need to consider how they effectively will be able to protect other persons that might be at risk wihtout having initial openings at their disposal. And I am not saying that Aikdo should become an offensive art, just that initiation with the aim of frist strike must be part of the traning. Most of the time when I have sparred or a person wanted to show a bit off heareing about Aikido - I do not even get to use AIkido because the sparring partner does no come at me hard enough, I will simply use low kicks or "hit them" before they get to it and that kind of ends it before it even have begun.

Unfortunately, as great as it looks, this form of ukemi is dangerous on the lower back. I destroyed my back from successfully practicing this ukemi for two years or so (on hard tatami mats), even against the advice of an anatomy-expert. The L4-L5 joint in the spine is simply not designed to take this kind of flexibility to go from standing to lowering the hand 180 degrees to the ground. No one, and I repeat 'No One' can do this movement for a long time without damage to the lower back, and that will spell the end of their aikido career, not to mention putting a severe handicap on our normally fully functional bodies. You just have to look up average ranges of mobility in the different sections of the spine. Any anatomy book would tell you that. Yogis and gymnasts are the exception and can bend backward like that but that is done as a result of various strength training movements. And even then, no one does a serious back bend and expects someone to jump on them while they do it. You do not want to bend backward as someone is trying to put their force into your body (such as in Irimi-nage). A bent body is vulnerable, not strong. If you add a large force to a body that is already forcing itself to be vulnerable, you are only asking for a massive injury. Sorry to sound negative about a wonderful video (I admire Mihaly's ukemi skills) but I think this ukemi is beautiful but, if we want to preserve and protect our own body as well as our partner's, it is not functional in that sense.
@unmeaninglessly1436 жыл бұрын
do you have another good example to break this type of fall? so no bending the body?
@jochenschepers60666 жыл бұрын
do you mean the form of practice or do you mean this kind of falling? - hence this particular kind of falling is and always was so common that I have problems to accept it being dangerous. The practicing method, bowing backward until you reach the mat with your outstretched arm, however seems to me more suspicious to injure the spine. Sorry Mihaly, but my reason to avoid training this kind of ukemi, it would be your bending-backward movement. I think I will give it a try and decide how it feels then.
@saardean44816 жыл бұрын
i think he means that it is ok for saving your self once in a while but it shouldn`t be used too often just "for the kicks" of it. Like everywhere even in good things that feel good you can easily overdo it and damage your body. nothing more, nothing less
@HesteBremse6 жыл бұрын
If I took falls with my arm 45 degrees outwards/upwards like shown in the video I would severely put a strain on my shoulder - The arm and shoulder are not very strong at this position - the simple logic with nearly any technique is that we humans are the strongest closets to our center. The about 45 degrees downwards puts much less strain on the shoulder but at the same demands much more careful/strainful bending of the neck keeping the jaw close to the chest. Also if you would have to roll with a Jo or ken in your hands this shown method cannot be used. As with all basic in Aikido techniques, they are closely connected to the Ken and Jo. Furthermore, if you fall off something like a bike, putting the arm out at such far reach as shown in the video is in most situations asking for problems and injuries. Particular the wrist is not very strong at taking such a large part of the bodyweight at such a complex and small joint as the wrist. The outsides of the back and the outsides of the upper and lower arms are much stronger and bouncier particular when aiming to be like a ball. In fact trying to take a fall with a stretched arm and the hand as the connector point can be fatal even in the Dojo - This is exactly what humans do by instinct when they fall and so they very often break their wrists. Additionally, when being thrown more directly into the ground there is no time to get the arm out in the shown position.

I agree 100%. On this video we can see very clearly how the lower back hits the tatami. When you think that in Japan they sometimes practice on wooden floor no doubt there must be injuries.

It's a good thing to know, but also shows the state in which modern Aikido is... pointless attacks ...extreme breakfalls which will only work on a soft mat...I would like to see anyone taking this fall on the old tatami or a wooden floor or the ground...like the irimi nage...there is no attack there...what is it that people are practicing here... breakfalls? dangerous meditation...very sad...indeed...

Good point, AC. I have been practicing 47 years. When I began training, these were not taught nor practiced. It is a good thing to know, however; but not to be done on a regular basis. This is very dangerous for children as well as adults. Much of the adaptation has been due to the movies that look cool and appeal to the wishing-they-could-do-that-audience. Budo training should not be for looks but for developing self-control, humility, character, etc. Many modern day instructors have leaned more to the showy and flair side of Aikido and as a result have taken shortcuts in technique and have added punches/kicks to appeal to the violent side of human nature. This is NOT the purpose of Aikido....nor does it demonstrate Real Aikido.
@saardean44816 жыл бұрын
you are right. Aikido should become more realistic. They should also teach how to point a gun at someone and shoot at them. This way we will get to the next level of human being
@jamessimpson64876 жыл бұрын
mike gallagher if Akido had no kicks or punches or knees or elbows or even something close to grappling then It is not a fighting style at all, or even self defense. plus those falls are all wrong, I've done Japanese jujitsu which emphasises the importance of how to fall correctly, believe me I know when I say practicing like that won't go far

Yoshinkan version is much better, AIKIKAI is too soft so this type of hiaku ukemi wouldnt help you enough in our style :). It looks very nice but in stronger techniques like in Yoshinkan you couldnt stand up with this
5 жыл бұрын
Yoshinkan aikido is just aikido on steroids or karate with grappling. If you really want to intentionally hurt someone, then this is the way to do it. Aikido is not about that. I would use a gun if I need that kind of force. Your so called grandmaster sensei totally miss the point of aikido. The funniest part is he gave himself that title. Last I checked no one is a grandmaster. Just those self appointed and usually that means absolutely "NOTHING!"

I trained with some excellent Judoka and champion kickboxers... their throws did hurt. I think throws have become underrated for defense. If anyone ever just trips in gravel or pavement they stay down. Thrown onto a curb or ice. Man, it is effective. I am currently learning Aikido to go with my other stuff and it is easier on my body. My origianl sensei taught Aiki Jutsu in a hard fashion and we only got decent mats after my shodan. Hahaha... in short I believe you! Throws work. Falling hurts, throw injure.
