Jack, my 473RL finally arrived (3 month wait due to disrupted pandemic global supply chain). My wife and I already used it a couple of times on one of the Raleigh, NC area reservoirs. We're super happy with it and we want to THANK YOU!!! I began looking for an entry level inflatable but after seeing your reviews and comments I quickly settled on the 473RL. As you said it's super quick to inflate with the included pump, and the base paddles seem good enough too. We didn't put in the foot braces and it was still easy to paddle. Plus it's really easy to transport, deflate, and dry out. Although it felt a little 'tippy' at first once we learned to keep ourselves centered we found it very stable. I'm also amazed how rigid it is once inflated. It's always great to get outdoors.. even more meaningful with the pandemic. Thank you for helping us and I'm sure many other people. We're thankful to be on assignment in Raleigh... makes kayaking even more enjoyable when looking at the already freezing temperatures back home in MN!

Hi, Came across your channel as I got into inflatable kayaking this summer. Have found all your videos really useful and a good steer. I’m currently waiting for a SE Razorlite 393 to be delivered, having had a blast over the summer months on a £40 piece of rubbish that I bought from Aldi. If you continue with your kayak reviews, some longer time trials or something similar (like over a bit of more challenging river) comparing different models would be interesting. I’m going to probably pick up an intex K1 challenger based upon your review form a different video for my wife. I’m not rich enough to buy to SE 393’s, and before you say anything, the 473 was out of stock (but to be honest, I’d prefer the single man as that is what it’ll be used for 99% of the time) Thanks for the info! Top man.

As a big KZbin watcher, I can tell you, for all I know you have the best and most comprehensive kayak reviews. They are simply great. I can see the passion as it translates well into your videos. I am currently watching as I own a sailboat and am looking into getting another inflatable kayak as a tender for calm waters. I had a category 2 inflatable, but it ended up completely moldy as I was unable to properly dry it. Wish I had seen your videos before getting it. But if anything, continue like that, and if you have other passions or interests, why not extend your reviews to other stuff? As your approach is really interesting and useful. I am sure the views will follow..!

@@reallyhappenings5597 Thanks, I have quite heavily researched inflatable kayaks had gathered that the hybrids with the drop stitch floors but tubular sides were generally more stable than the full DS kayaks. Presumably there is a trade off though in that they are a bit a slower and more affected by wind gusts (reflects the general trade off in that regard - full DS, narrow with V hull = speed/less stable, while width, flat hull and tubular sides = less speed but more stable)

I took a look at the Driftsun Rover 120/220 specs; these are much wider, very stable, but they would be slow for flatwater. Those models are designed for whitewater. They are quite light actually; made in China and I have not paddled them. I see they also have some touring models, Almanor 110 and Almanor 146; these are also quite wide, and would be in the more stable but slower, beginner category. Hope that helps...

Hello Jack, I recently purchased a 393rl razorlite. I am very happy with my purchase. Since purchasing we have moved to a property with a dock and I am wondering if you always deflate your kayak between outings or do you feel it is ok to keep it inflated and stored on the dock provided it is not too hot, understanding that in the heat the air in the compartments would expand and possibly weaken the seams, etc. Any input you have would be appreciated.

Hi Jack. I've been watching your videos about choosing an inflatable kayak. They have been helpful. I'm not sure if I'm a novice or not. I have an Equinox (hard shell) 10.4 that I enjoy very much. I've been using it for flat water for about 5 years but not often enough. I love paddling but can't lift the kayak myself. It's 54 lbs. Now, I have a van that doesn't have a rack, so I'm looking into an inflatable, so that I can transport it in the van and I can kayak without someone there to help me. Before I saw your video, I was leaning toward the Advanced Elements Sport. Then, after watching your videos I was convinced to buy an Razorlite. But, I read that they are for Intermediate paddlers and they are not as stable as others. One thing I love about my Equinox is that it never feels unstable. It's 31.75 inches wide, which falls between the two kayaks that you review here. The tracking & speed with my kayak could be better but only is a problem when the wind blows. I wouldn't want anything with worse tracking, but I sure don't want to tip over if the wind picks up. What inflatable kayak(s) would you recommend for me?

I had an Innova Sunny purchased in 2007. I used it very infrequently, less than 10 times over the course of 8 years. I kept it deflated in it's backpack in my garage in Northern California. Had the glue on 2 D rings fail over the years and had to be re-glued. No big deal I thought. In 2015 I went to go take it out and it was falling apart. Half the glue seams were failing. I contacted Innova but they were unwilling to do anything. Fine, it was out of warranty but I'll never buy another one of their products ever again. That was an $800 kayak in 2007 and a complete piece of junk imo. I purchased a $300 Airhead TK-1 for my son at the same time and it's still going strong today with dozens of outings and he's been very rough with it.

Are you sitting in a middle position in the Razorlite, or is that the rearmost position? I am trying to decide between the 473 and the 393 as a solo paddler, but it was my understanding that the 473 doesn't accommodate a middle position for a solo paddler, so you'd have to add your own D-rings, but then the footrests appear to be fixed in place and they don't appear to sell the plastic footrests separately, so they'd be too far forward from you. I may have to just go with the 393, though I assume it will be slightly slower than the longer 473. Do you know if the 473 is a bit faster?

Via looking at the U.S. Patent 9,452,809, it is hard to make kayak with feature like Sea Eagle RazorLite. Either only use drop stitch on the floor only (most of the high end IK) or on the side only (advanceelement EVO). Or drop stitch inflatable sides are not configured to be flared outboard from the drop stitch inflatable floor (Like Advanced Elements Airvolution 2). Basically, manufacture need to find a little different way to work around to avoid inferring the pattern.

Thanks for another interesting video but I would have appreciated a bit more understanding of the design intention of the two boats. The way the two boats are set up (two seats in one and one seat in the other) gives a misleading impression of the internal stowage space - the decks of the Airvolution do appear to allow some stowage underneath in much the same way as the Razorlite (and the extra width and length of the Airvolution decks might possibly create a better platform than the floor of the Razorlite for stowing and securing bulkier items). The inner top edges of the dropstitch sides of the Airvolution seem to have a tubular shape which is probably the most significant design difference between the two boats. As you say, both boats are highly susceptible to weathercocking and I think that will always be true for any flat-bottomed boat which skims across the surface of the water with only a small plastic skeg to act as any kind of directional anchor. Whenever I plan to go paddling, wind direction is the single most crucial factor which determines my start and finish points. As a more general comment on your videos, I think it would be useful if you were to include some information about the portability of any particular inflatable boat as well as the simplicity (or otherwise) of pumping them up and packing them away. If the priority consideration is that a boat should be easy to store when not in use, then any inflatable is likely to be better than any hardshell. But if the priority is to be able to carry the boat up and down unaccommodating access routes and/or use public transport, then I think the choice of inflatable becomes much more restricted. Most of the promotional videos show a clip of somebody casually swinging down through the trees onto a deserted beach with the boat in a backpack but it really isn’t that simple. I have been paddling inflatables for around ten years and I have just acquired a Bic Full HP1 which is very similar to the smaller Razorlite. It came with a carry bag which is of very high quality in every way and which has the capacity to carry the entire rig including paddle, pump, seat and still have room for personal gear as well as a collapsed set of wheels. The downside is that the loaded bag is very big, very heavy and only just about manageable by a single person - there is no chance that I will ever be able to make use of the very high-quality backpack straps which are part of the package. The new boat is, however, much quicker and easier to pump up than my ageing Walker Bay Airis boats (even though it operates at a higher pressure). That is probably because the pump is taller and thinner. I think that there is a lot more to consider than a boat’s potential top speed!

Hi Jack. Great videos, reviews and expert knowledge! Since you are probably the world's leading authority / expert on inflatable kayaks ;) I would like to ask a question / your advice please: Since it sounds like you haven't yet got to try out the Aquamarina Tomahawk (which sounds like it's a bit tippy), I'm probably going to choose between the Advanced Elements AirVolution2 and the Sea Eagle Razorlite (both 2 seaters). (Ideally, 3 seats would be great for either our 5- or 6-year old in the middle of us - but I can't seem to trust the Aquamarina Tomahawk reviews/reputation, and don't know much about another brand Story). I guess, since we might put a kid in the middle of two adults in either the AE or the Sea Eagle, it makes sense - from a safety point of view - to go for the slightly more stable Advanced Elements AirVolution2 instead of the more narrow, slightly less stable Sea Eagle? Your thoughts/comments and insight would be greatly appreciated please Jack! Thank you very much and happy paddling! Mike

AEs whole line is wide, mostly short waterline boats. I think that is their niche. This is much better than their older large bladder boats and almost a leisure, wide opening hard shell. My wife, family from Corfu BTW, used an AE for years because she was afraid of rolling. That is likely their market. Hopefully this one is not as hard to dry. The Razor is really a collapsible Louisiana pirogue boat more than s kayak. A very versatile boat for paddlers with steady balance and patience to get their sea legs each time they climb in. I use hard wood pirouges myself, and it is sn aquired taste. They always feel like they'll roll for the first minutes of use.

thank you for your information. I have some thoughts, and questions: What about ecology? Things do not live forever. What is the lifetime of drop stitch materials? As far as I know the manufacturers warrant only about two to three years. The main problem lies in its construction. Depending on its construction there is no sheating on the inner side, there's only the fabric. The (rather high) air pressure is kept inside the inflatable tubes/walls with a layer of some material "glued" on the outer side of this fabric. A separation of this sheating material and the underlying fabric - aka delamination - will result in bubbles. Nylon threads on the inner side of the material will rip by the time with a similar effect. Both damages cannot be repaired. Can we dispose this material without any pollution? I doubt. Good inflatable boats as e.g. Gumotex or Grabner have a skin consisting of a rubber-like sheating on both sides of the fabric. In case of a damage this boats can be repaired. The manufacturers say that a lifetime of 20 to 30 years is possible in case of careful handling. And cheap PVC boats create very toxic fumes when burnt. Most of the inflatable boats are special waste, and they should be handled accordingly at the end of their lifetime. Are the buyers of such boats really aware of this? Do they care about? Do they dispose their "waste" boats the right way? What do you think? Is this worth some thoughts too?

You're raising some really good questions. I've learned by talking to chemists is that pretty much all of these kayaks are made of some form of vinyl. They only differ in their qualities based on the differences in polymerization process that they go through. Unfortunately all of these materials are really harmful for the environment while being manufactured. I'm not aware of their toxicity in a landfill.

A few comments: you are not centered in the Airvolution due to sitting too far back. Notice how your bow is raised and not planted and that's why you are getting the bows side to side travel. Easy correction is to always center your seat or add weight to the front if you want to sit in the rear (dog, camping gear, etc.). A big plus for the AirVolution is that it has two (one for each chamber) pressure relief valves so when paddling in warm/hot temps, you won't blow a air chamber and if that happens, that is not covered by warranty and your kayak is not repairable..game over. I've paddled the RL393 (single) and yes, it's "twitchy", but less so than my hard shell narrow sea kayak. If in busy/confused water (especially with eddies) the RL393 will toss you if not paying attention. That said, it's a excellent kayak. Note the width of the AirVolution single is 32" wide vs 37" on the tandem. Both excellent yayaks, but the built in pressure relief valves on the AirVolution, thicker material, and lower profile (important in wind) would lead me to go that route. If you know you need extra room for gear and ok with less stability, the Sea Eagle RL393/473 is the way to go. EDIT: guarantee you CANNOT roll the Razorlite tandem since no spray skirt and open design. Yes, I've paddled it (gf had it and was too tippy for her needs..we carry camera gear). Either one of these are very poor choices for any whitewater as they don't have adequate number of scuppers to drain waves and wrong design for ww. Finally it's paddle and not oar:) All told, two different kayaks serving different needs (AirV more stable, Razor faster) and both from two very reputable companies.

@gloppy101
@gloppy101 3 жыл бұрын
@@inneradventures if you are centered, your bow should be planted and not moving side to side with each stroke (see video starting at 1:56). If still getting the wiggle/bow not down, add a few gallon water jugs to the bow. Regard pressure relief valves: The valves release number is spec'd by AE's design engineer to prevent blowout. I'm thinking this AE kayak has pressure substantially greater than the 10psi of the Razorlite. NRS paddle boards are high pressure at 20psi and also have a pressure relief valve to for added safety. That's a very good feature of the AirVolution. Forgot to add that my Aire Sawtooth kayak has a pressure relief valve in the floor for safety. My Advanced Elements Expedition Elite has the drop stitch floor, but no pressure relief valve as it's not needed at lower 4-6psi. Happy paddling.

@@gloppy101 I agree, it was an unintentional skewed review. @1:38 seating looks right, after the paddle @3:40 seat is too far back increasing the YAW. If you look closely you will see the entire seat configuration changed (note the placement of the strap). I also wonder if the skeg is installed, lol. I have the AE3029 (SINGLE) and yaw is minimal, however the front does sit higher than most would think is OK. Jury is still out on the weather cocking as I have only been oout with port side winds 3-5 mph but could feel it. Pressure for the Airvolution AE3029 is rated at 10-12 psi. I haven't had the AE3029 out on a weekender yet but I'm sure I could manage a 3 day 2 nights no problem, there is a bit of storage fore and aft, not much but some. Paddling a tandem solo isn't going to give you as good a paddle as a single. the AE3029 is 33" wide and 39lbs, no problem to carry or store.

I get that these can be rolled up and put in the trunk of a car and in a closet, but in my opinion when you're talking 50lbs plus, you're still starting to lose the plot. I have a Kokopelli Moki Lite, with a high pressure drop-stich floor, and medium pressure left and right air sections (PVC bags inside the main body). I'm sure it's not quite as durable or as quick as these, I've been able to get it at around 4.5 MPH max with my Aqua-Bound paddles. The key though is that it weighs HALF as much as the AE - meaning I can get it out of the car, inflated, and down the dock and into the water myself. For solo paddling both of these are non-starters.

@DavekayBSC
@DavekayBSC 3 жыл бұрын
@@inneradventures That's the point - I like going out to Cook Park to paddle Tualatin River by myself sometimes, and with a sub 30lb kayak, I can do that. Kokopelli's Moki series just came out this year, it's their first that isn't an ultra lightweight packraft type. The design is typical of the "Level 2" type. The drop-stitch floor is the "skateboard" type that is a separate piece and fits over the bottom fabric of the boat - similar to AquaGlide's "HB" models and the AE high-pressure floor. It's rated for 8-10PSI, but I usually put around 7 in it. Overall the design is very similar to the Chelan 120HB from AG, but without the inflatable seat base or drain channels of that model. It counters with velcro straps for tying your paddles to the side of the boat though (seriously, why dont ALL kayaks have this? It's genius, and makes carrying the boat yourself that much easier because you don't have to worry about your paddles). Both the Moki and Chelan use all military valves which is nice. I think the lightweight practicality of models like the Moki and Chelan shouldn't be overlooked. My friends all have Intex K1s, and when we go out together they all carry their boats by themselves. I really like being able to do that too. I don't want to have to wait for a friend to carry their boat out and then walk back down the dock to the water so they can help me carry my 50lb $1000 inflatable out. There are compromises sure compared to the all drop-stitch models, but having experienced the K1 and the Moki, I can defnitely say that it's a huge improvement over that class of boat. MUCH faster and better tracking on the water, more stable, and definitely more comfortable as well.

Somewhat one-sided. 1. The weight is heavy because all the protruding parts use the 0.9mm pvc material to protect the parts that are easily injured. More durable, while increasing stability. 2. In terms of accommodating space, the advanced deck has front and rear decks, which is a hard structure. A bungee is fixed, which can reuse the space on the deck, the seaeagle one is soft sheet, you know what I mean . You are testing a two-person boat, you should take two people, and then it is more reasonable to compare the capacity. 3. Speed test, still used two-person boat but operated by one person. Why not a two-person test? In design, if one person is paddling, the seat should be adjusted forward and sit in the middle position. The second seat of advanced is clearly behind. It is not a normal position for single operation. 4. The AD width is large, but the deck has an angle , which does not affect the rowing and should be more comfortable.

You seem to be defending AE as if I critizised it and it affected you personally. Sorry about that impact. To be clear - AE made a pretty good product. They just made one questionable design choice IMHO. 1. What's the thickness of RL? (Since you are claiming it's less durable) 2. AE's deck is rigid. And you can certainly store stuff on it. But RL allows you to store stuff under the soft deck and thus lower the center of gravity. And soft deck decreases weight. 3. If you can't see that I tested both of them with seat in the center position (which I did) I would question your experience in this area. 4. I am not even sure what you are saying with that. I was commenting on RL seats being taller and more supportive for the back.
