DM's regularly throw property at players, and have for decades. Having a "home" is a necessity for your early adventurers to actually have roots in the world they're saving, the only difference is, Bastions (2024) give players some mechanical benefits for owning these spaces.

At the point where you have a teleportation circle in your bastion it is officially a relevant POI of that world. Those things are expensive and immensely useful. A high level spell caster needs 1 year to make one of those. They are about as expensive as an airport and even more useful.

This is a great video for explaining the available options, along with some suggestions. I did a little back of the napkin math and found that for a barracks to be beneficial, you'd need 6 or more players with their bastions built together, AND they'd have to only be able to issue orders 50% of the time. So if you have sending stones or some other means of communicating back to home base (which you absolutely should if you have a Bastion), a barracks might end up being a complete loss of efficiency every time you pick it. Not to mention, Defenders are the only Bastion NPCs that die. If you're attacked and use defenders, people die at the cost of potentially preserving the use of one special facility for one bastion turn. If you have no defenders... ironically, no one dies. Your hirelings are still safe. They just trash the place and shut down operations while the hirelings run or hide or something. lol Is it more ethical and more efficient to forego defenses? So, my takeaway is... never build defenses. They're inordinately expensive to protect against a very small loss of efficiency and no lasting consequences. Much of the exploits from the UA were fixed, like specifying that magical brews from the pub retain their effect for only 24 hours after being poured. But it looks like they still left some unclear wording in the Bastions that allows for some fun RAW thought experiments (that should never, ever be attempted or allowed at any real table.) For example, building defensive walls says that you pick a spot "around" your Bastion. It probably should have said immediately adjacent, or within your Bastion. There's no distance limitation, though. So let's say I'm willing to build a defensive wall with a radius of hundreds or even thousands of miles. A Guildhall: Masons' Guild can build a defensive wall at no cost, every day. Well, I'm going to start my defensive wall immediately on top of the evil king's throne in the capital city 100 miles away. Within 1 day, a 20' tall, 5'x5' section of fortified wall is built atop of the throne. If they tear it down... they just rebuilt it the next day! Your move, evil king! Of course, no one reasonable would interpret the text this way. It's clearly meant to imply that the defensive walls are within or immediately adjacent to you or your ally's Bastion. I also really love that they improved the Smithy from producing +1 magic weapons to producing common or uncommon magic items from the Armaments table. I'd love to see what's on that table, though!

All casters want the Teleportation circle. Any hirelings for it can be useful with a couple of different spells but the real part is to build up for lvl 17+ when things like clone, create Magen and simulacrum can be done by the hireling also by lvl 13 a wizard never has to be away from the Bastion with teleport and teleportation circle. I still like the idea of the bastion making money. In addition to the garden fabricate plate armor for 1500 gp. Between crafting options and fabricate you can definitely speed up any crafting process. Even in AL you can cheese the system.

How would refugees realistically provide anything more than a financial burden until you are able to place them into specified hire hireling roles? It should cost you to help them, unless you can spin it around and successfully put them to work for you. That's whole sessions right there of keeping everyone alive and internal politics managed to prevent hostile takeovers, with each "mutiny" being intensely personal and motivated by a handful of "powerful" characters. Like how in the series "The Terror" almost everyone probably would have survived if they had done more due diligence and trusted the only guy who knew what to expect, versus the unmitigated disaster it ended as.

Just got inspired to make a new magic item... Very rare, the Portable Mine. At first glance, it appears to be a heavy grey tarp rolled up. When unrolled, its 8 feet long and 5 feet wide. One end is Semi-circular, making it appear to be shaped like an arched doorway. You can roll it onto a wall and it will stick to the wall of it's own accord. When fully unrolled onto a wall, the surface transforms into solid stone. If you use a pickaxe or other mining tools on the stone, you break into a 20 foot diamter circular room that appears to be a natural cave. In the center is a small basin or pool. The first person to break through the stone and enter the room gains instinctual knowledge that they are the owner of this room and can make other people co-owners by inviting them and having them give an offering of their lifeblood to the pool in the center. (A small cut and a few drops is all ot takes. For those who do not have blood, a small piece of themselves is required) The mine consists of poor quality stone that wouldn't be enticing to any buyer if quarried, and encompases 1\4 cubic miles of stone per owner. This 1\4 cubic mile will serve as that owner's bastion and the rooms will appear when it is available. The appearance of the stone and interior molds itself to the owner's wishes, even being able to give a convincing display of the sky, though it is completely illusionary. The inside of the mine is stable and doesn't shake, even if the entrance is affixed to a mobile structure. Despite being an extra dimensional space, it does not adhear to the rules about extra dimensional spaces being placed inside one another, though other extra dimensional items still follow the rules as normal. You can take a bag of holding and a handy haversack inside the mine, but you still can't put the bag of holding insided the haversack even while inside the mine. If the mine is ever taken off the wall amd rolled back up, any creature inside will have 5 minutes of air for every 5 cubic feet of open space inside. If all owners die without creating new owners, the walls will begins slowly closing in from the deepest depths of the mine to the entrance, absorbing all inanimate objects or people unlucky enough to not make it out in time. The portable mine will then roll itself up, and disolve into fine dust. Obviously this would need some tweaking, but I think it would absolutely be fun to use it as a mobile home.

Having walls cost money based on size despite getting no benefit from larger bastions is such a miss. It seems as though flavour isn't truly free after all. Also, the facility size determines the "maximum" space it takes up, meaning you can theoretically make a "roomy" sweatshop with exactly enough space for your hirelings to work and no more, just to make walls cheaper. Don't forget to combine all of your party's bastions into one giant square with no corridors or basic facilities, just to maximize the value of walls. Edit: Just realized the Defensive Walls only have a 5% chance of being relevant, and ONLY on the Maintain order. So all that time and money, and the horror of pitting your roleplayers against your optimizers, for almost no actual benefit. Just don't build walls, it's not worth it.
@gabrielcoutinho4414Ай бұрын
I have a question. IIRC, in the playtest, you could share a bastion with other PCs. If this feature is still in place, is there anything in the new rules restricting you from using facilities built by other PCs. Also, if that is possible, is it possible for more than one PC gain the benefits of a facility at the same time? The benefits I have in mind are things like the inspiration you get from the workshop.

Consider the following: a group of adventurers is plundering a large hoard. The 5th level sidekick Expert has filled a bag of holding to the limit with gold coins, and carries it off to the corner so it doesn't get overloaded. She finds a dusty mirror, wipes it with her sleeve to check the reflection quality, and suddenly finds herself in another place. A place of dense fog, with a lifeless sandy floor. After a few hours, she figures help isn't coming, and decides to spend the gold to build a Bastion inside her unbounded cell of the Mirror of Life Trapping. Putting aside the rules for the mirror itself - each such Mirror is a unique item and can have whatever properties the story requires - does the Bastion RAW work like that? Sacrifice the Gold to an unknown entity and the structure simply appears?

Did they remove the distinction between different types of orders? In the playtest you could only issue one order at a time, incentivizing multiple facilities that trigger on the same order. But the new version seems to imply that you can issue different orders to each of your facilities on the same turn, meaning there is no longer any need to list which facility uses which type of order.

So the storehouse can sell goods beyond what it gathers on the prior order? Based on the text, it seems like it's only goods (1lb of weat, 1 goat, etc.) since that's what the order will buy. So could I put a glass bottle of acid (3 days worth of acid from an alchemy jug) in there and sell it for more than the full cost (150 gold in this case)? I really like that, but assumed it wasn't the case, due to how much money you can rack up. Saying you're stuck with just selling the goods it gathers, locks you into the 500 gp limit, so I could see them intending that.

Fact that the UA version let you cast a 10th level spell was hilarious. Like, only at 20th level, and it's just Healing Word so it wouldn't have really broken anything, but spells above 9th level are supposed to be a pretty big deal. Being limited to a base level cast (assuming the wording you've put here is accurate to what's in the DMG) might be correcting too far in the other direction, but it's still a decent enough freebie to have in your back pocket I suppose

Information not mentioned out loud but hella important to me from looking at the text typed out: Some of the special facility prerequisites have changed since the UA document! 6:56 Arcane Study: Was "Ability to use an Arcane Focus as a Spellcasting Focus" now includes "or a tool" Workshop: Was "Expertise in a skill" now is "none" Smithy: Was "Fighting Style feature or Unarmored Defense feature" now is "none" Forge Clerics and Artificers rejoice! You are no longer being accidentally barred from having extremely thematic Special Facilities in your bastions. This is especially good for Artificer what with now having access to all three of those facilities when they had access to none them in the UA. 9:58 Training Area: Was "Expertise in a skill, Fighting Style Feature, or Unarmored Defense feature" now is "None" 12:42 Demiplane: Was "Ability to use an Arcane Focus as a Spellcasting Focus" now includes "or a tool" As an Artificer fan, I really like being able to get access to the Demiplane's Fabrication feature. Kind of wish that feature was better though. A limit of 5gp on object when the facility requires a level 17 character is kind of silly.

I like the idea of a keep or a stronghold. Bastions in 5.5 are not that. They're more like in-game safe spaces than the former, what with how they don't really exist in the world. Events that take place in the world that have far reaching implications don't affect bastions because the rules for them don't allow it. Rimemaiden dropping the temperature of the region to deadly levels, bastion's still comfortably toasty. Volcano spewing virulent red ash all over the territory, bastion is disease free and no more red than the bricks that made it. No, bastions break immersion as bad as a knock-off Naruto character in King Arthur's court. A proper keep exists in the world, is part of the world and can be affected by the world.
@fadeleaf845Ай бұрын
The intent is for them to do as little as possible to impact the world because all the adventures are railroads with no agency and having a bastion become a centerpoint in the narrative would "get in the way" of whatever slop the adventure module tries to shove down your throat.
