The way Armor of Agathys is worded, it lasts for just 1 hour. The loss of the temp hp within that hour ends the spell early. Meaning you can’t extend the effect beyond that hour by adding more temp hp. Combining it with polymorph is still awesome to get that bigger temp hp pool. The duration on the spell refers to all parts of the spell. Meaning that temp hp is gone in that hour timeframe as well. The duration gives the exceptions to the rule that temp hp last until long rest, not the other way around as you’re suggesting. The Druid wild shape could potentially work as an example here. If the Druid comes out of wild shape, their temp hp is gone.

I think you still missed Major Image which had it's upcasting changed from not needing concentration at level 6 to not needing concentration at 4th level or higher, which is significant, especially for warlock illusion mages as they previously would not have had access to permanent major image and now they do.

@@PackTactics I don’t have access to the books yet, but I have not come across any new rules under spells or adjustments to duration/concentration that would indicate certain things carry over once the duration expires. I’m under the impression that since a line is now gone from temp hp you’re assuming the rule has changed for spells.

@@animerules0072 Ok? 5:28 Look I found one. Read the last sentence. Also then like 30 seconds later I mention another video where I find 2 more cases all shown on video. It's not hidden or anything. Just read what it says. The temp hp lasts until you take a long rest and the spells support that because it doesn't say otherwise. Specific beats general and it's agreeing with the general rule for Temp hp duration.

Not only Barkskin gives you 17 AC now, it also is a Bonus Action and doesnt require Concentration anymore. It may not be useful if everyone in your party has great AC but they clearly buffed it xD

While i agree. But I think it would have been better if it counted as armor and stacked with shields and other ac improving items like ring of protection. It wouldn't be overpowered either considering it only lasts an hour.

Moon druids in 2024 get bonus ac while wild shaped to 13+wisdom mod, also there is bonus action conflict. But barkskin has gone from a trap bad spell to potentially useful in low levels or specific other circumstances.

I still remember a meme about Magic Aura where the party, playing Curse of Strahd, had set up Protection from Evil and Good (or possibly Hallow), so Strahd couldn't affect them where they were hiding from him, so he then went and used Magic Aura to mask himself as a Humanoid creature, bypassing their defenses. "How do you do, fellow Humanoids?"

Sleep changed from “anti-goblin horde at low level, and getting less useful as levels go up” to having a decent use in most cases. It also gets rid of the whole needing to go meta and talk about monster HP with the DM. And while it is two saving throws, at least they’re both within one round (one when you cast, the second at the end of the target’s turn); you cast it, which immediately incapacitates them if they fail the save, and by your next turn the target(s) has either shrugged it off or fallen unconscious.

I was confused at him saying it got nerfed, since in my opinion its a massive buff. It was fairly useless above level 3-5. Good luck trying to use it at level 10 above. Now you could use it any time its no longer a "take at 1 drop at 5" spell.

Sleep is a *LOT* weaker at levels 1 and 2 but it’s a lot more usable from level 3 onward. I could see a Wizard holding onto Sleep for moderate difficulty encounters where they don’t want to burn higher level spells.

Shield wasn't nerfed because all defensive reactions were buffed (Like defensive duelist) and people were going crazy about divine favor because they made that non-concentration but did nothing to help hunters mark be a half decent "feature"

There is an interesting use case for Blade Ward. If allowing non-PHB materials, Earth Genasi from Monsters of the Multiverse can cast Blade Ward as a bonus action. So an Earth Genasi Fighter in melee is pretty tanky. They can get Blade Ward up quickly, can have very high AC due to armor and shield, which is then boosted due to Blade Ward debuffing attack rolls against them, have good Con saves so they're more likely to maintain concentration if they are hit, and usually have either few or no spell slots, so they're less lilely to be concentrating on something else. An Earth Genasi Eldritch Knight could also concentrate on Blade Ward and then leave their spell slots free to cast Shield if they need to pump their AC even higher in an emergency.

I believe the Command spell used to require that the creature can understand your speech. Command now working on anything is a pretty significant change. Most creatures do not know many languages, if at all. Some of them basically just have a part in their stat block telling the DM to make it up. Constructs, monstrosities and beasts were effectively immune to the spell but they are now vulnerable to it. You can actually use Command on something like a direwolf now.

I once used Phantasmal Force to make someone who'd caused the death of all his close ones to see their dead spirits (which my character had seen in his dreams) to surround him and hurl insults at him/attack him. The DM said he'd not even roll a saving throw on that cause the guy was so traumatized by it. I'd only intended to immobilize the NPC with the spell until we dealt with the rest of the people around but a building nearby was destroyed and a rock crushed him xD Glad to see it's getting boosted.

That'd be a nice option for Two-Handed weapon users. They don't have the option for a shield, but they do have the benefit of a free hand they can actually cast with. (I guess a shield user could use it on the opening turn, but once they lose concentration its not worth recasting). Granted, even if you CAN recast it.. I can't really imagining choosing to burn MULTIPLE actions in one combat for the sake of a 2-ish AC boost.

Sleep isn't really a nerf. It went from only being useful for the 1st 2 levels of play to remaining useful for the entire game. I admit I wish it had at least a 10' radius but it's not as bad as you think it is. Maybe they should have added upcasting that increases the area of effect.

Divine Favor is a nice Spell. For a first level spell slot, you could get 4d4 at level 5. Nothing amazing, but that's 10 dpr, for one 1st LVL spell. With no concentration. And it does not eat your BA every time the target dies, like Hunters Mark.

6:17 World Tree Barbarian can give 2d6 temp hit points to one person within 10ft every turn while raging at lvl 3. so that's an option Glamour bard can use a bonus action to grant someone with in 60ft a bardic inspiration dice of temp hp archfey warlock can grant themself 1d10 temp hp everytime they teleport at lvl 3 which they can do for free around 3 tomes a long rest which at level 6 they can cast as a reaction to taking damage fiend gains temp hp anytime they take down an enemy or an enemy near them is taken down of cha + lvl those are all i can think of rn

Yes, divine favor is only 1d4 so not great. Issue is Hunter's mark is 1d6, but requires concentration, only applies to one target, and requires and BA to move. Yet Hunter's mark is apparently good enough that Rangers are supposed to want to build around...

Sleep seem like a really good use of a first level slot for high level adventurers. It can shut down a boss for a round (or more) just like hideous laughter or command and has the potential to get more than one creature in the AOE.

I haven't seen screenshots of their feature that lets them do that but if it goes by the same rules as bladesinger it absolutely doesn't allow you to replace an attack with a spell because the haste action isn't taking the attack action

Haste now says, "gains an additional action on each of its turns. That action can be used to take only the Attack (one attack only), Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Utilize action." So yeah, you should be able to cast a cantrip using the Attack action when combined with those features.

Divine favor is insane for a lvl 1 bonus action spell. It adds 1d4 per attack, at level 5 just with 2 attacks per turn (not even considering off hand attacks, swipe or polearm master) for 10 turns, the spell itself can add 20d4 along of its duration, and it can't lose the concetration. And it can stacks with others types of concentration. Crazy shit for a lvl 1 bonus action spell.

You can also auto paralyze a creature without the poisoned condition immunity. And 2 successful attack rolls with your spell mod. Ray of sickness is auto poisoned condition, summon undead rotting has a melee attack that if it hits and the creature is already poisoned it is paralyzed without save.

Counterspell makes it so you don't lose spell slots when you get counterspell, but it doesn't aply if you cast the spell without expending a spell slot, like with ranger's new favorite enemy or archfey warlock's steps of the fey, but since monster on the new monster manual don't use spellslots, they can cast spells a number of times per day, they waste their use of that spell more then the players do.

Blade Ward is an excellent pick for Magic Initiate on a Monk. -1d4 on attack rolls against you really helps the middling defence, and you can cast it round one and still BA attack twice

I'm not sure what he meant in the video put the duration of the spell didn't actually get increased if you're in combat and you were going to lose your temporary hit points and then someone gives it to you back it's still good but after an hour you lose the damage for the spell no matter how many temporary HP you have

Super-common house rule for Nystul's is to make both affects only affect the senses of creatures... It's a bit of a nerf from RAW, but it's preferable to just banning it outright.

Hard disagree on Divine favor, 1d4 a round extra changes sword and board from dealing 1d8+str a round to 1d8+1d4+str per attack it's like being able to wield a heavy weapon with one hand and still get your shield bonus to AC. Depending on how long your DM runs combat it pays for itself well over using the same slot for a smite in most cases while still being able to smite on a crit OR use one of the new smite spells since they are no longer concentration.

6:30 - I discovered that you can now use Find Familiar to summon a Haungharassk. A Huge slug with 52 (7d12+7) HP. It's not very fast, but it perfectly useable as a mount for its Spider Climb, and it can be an excellent body blocker to keep enemies back. And the best part is that touching it gives you 6 Temp HP for 24 hours. Not sold yet? How about any creature or object that touches it also gains the benefit of Remove Curse? This is a really useful familiar for a lot of utility! The only problem is its weakness to salt. But, honestly, who carries that around?

Divine favor works exceptionally well for dual wielders. Especially Vengeance Paladins who can stack Hunters Mark on top of it. 3.5 + 2.5 X three attacks using a nick weapon and Dual Wielder at level 4 equals...carry the one...no--wait, cross that out...well, a buttload of damage, anyway!

Blade Ward reveals an interesting flaw in cantrips. Any effect with a duration has to use concentration otherwise it’s effectively a class feature on the level of an invocation. Concentration then means that none of those duration effects can be combat centric and feel viable since it’s a buff you will likely lose in the process of using it once. Like blade ward could simply give you resistance to one attack in the next round as a bonus action and it would feel sensible in a game where casters have less hp and naturally try to avoid being singled out. I would honestly prefer a cantrip like that over mage armor, shield, blur, and misty step all existing together.

I found a different way to do a find Familiar Spell to summon a mount for small creatures. Goat, pig, and vulture would be awesome option for mounts that could be put away, used as spies or alarms while sleeping. Another spell that goblins could have access to would be plant growth with small trails thru it, so they can travel unimpeded while medium+ use up 4X movement. One last thing small creatures can now wield heavy weapons without disadvantage if their str is 13+. Imagine a group of Goblin Barbarians wielding great axes running towards your group. How you like and have a great one.

If I’m not mistaken, Armor of Agathy’s lasts until the 1 hour mark, and I think the phrasing of Hungar of Hadar implies that it simulates the Darkness spell, creating magical darkness. The argument against that wording is why would it change at all, but I digress.

Wow, now nystul's shenanigans are finally _CLEARLY_ RAW... Some old tweets of jeremy hinted that nystul was supposed to be able to work with "hold person", what meant that the spell being broken was RAI and intended all along. I know this opens a whole can of worms that can get broken really fast, but... HEY, now I can finally cast Nystul+Awaken on my familiars :D

Depends on what kind of kobold you're playing. Like if you're playing old Kobold then I recommend asking the party to travel at nights or near nights so you have advantage more consistently. If the day is cloudy then you're fine. As for roleplay, just be fun and everyone will love you.

1d4 extra damage on every attack is good if you make a lot of attacks. plus it stacks with smites. a first level smite normally does 2d8 aka 9 damage. divine favour beats that in 4 attacks, aka 2 rounds of combat past lv5. it also stacks with smites. get the spell on a fighter(multiclass) with action surge and dual wielding and it's a huge damage buff.

Relying on “averages” to determine a spell’s worth when sheer luck is the real determining factor of how much a spell does in a particular instance seems like a fool’s errand. Size does matter here. A d4 is a d4. The most you’re going to get out of it is 4 without outside help like modifiers. An extra d12 per round isn’t much to scoff at. It could be on top of 3d4 or And even an extra d4 is something. I think divine favor should’ve been either a Paladin/cleric spell, maybe bump it up to a d6… it’s an extra bit of damage. It’s not bad early on. Even a d4 is likely worth a measly 1st level slot, especially when you factor in that Multiclassing will get you a good deal more slots, making those 1st level slots that much more expendable. And for a little extra damage, depending on how often you take long rests to replenish them, I think it’s worth it.

So combine arcane lock with knock. If they try to dispel arcane lock, knock activates. Then tens, maybe hundreds, of guards come running to your position.

While it is somewhat of a retroactive ruling, I believe that the new wording of Suggesting actually follows the intention of the old wording - the course of action doesn't have to sound reasonable _to_ the target creature, but instead must be something that the target creature can reasonably accomplish without being obviously harmful. English is funny sometimes.

Thanks for pointing out how the spells have changed. While we are learning the interesting interactions that new wording brings, I will try to interpret the rules as intended. I doubt they meant to make Armor of Agathys and polymorph so broken together. Hopefully we get some clarification from Jeremy when the official drop comes.

Just dual wield. Dual wielding pally can make 4 attacks at 5 with a high hit rate thanks to advantage. Makes it very likely to land all 4 hits which is slightly better damage than if you'd burned a 1st level slot on divine smite

Almost certainly. That's how almost every other summoning spell in the book works, and would put its HP around where they should be based on those spells as well. It's still very good as the offense remains sweet, but this is an errata that should be expected if they do any at all.

divine favour somehow turned into lightning damage (metamagic adept feat) + tempest cleric level 6 ability - when you hit while that is active, you knock the thing 10ft away for free no save for every attack. I just think that’s fun, especially if you have a long reach.

For sleep, target the center of a square not the corner and it would cover three of the enemies. I like the radius because with clever targeting one has tactical options when enemies are interspersed with allies.

I think I'd still do individual Commands as a homerule. It's funny to have a bad guy Kneel (although I guess this is covered by grovel?) or to help your friend by commanding Jump, if they themselves can't right now

For those wondering aboot Divine Favor, now that Smite is a bonus action because Crawford is a hack, Divine Smite deals 2d8 (9) damage with one bonus action. It would take 4 hits to equal one divine smite. Paladins have 2 attacks, and combats are usually 3 rounds.

While this is true (well, combat length is game dependent), there are ways to get more attacks, which is why people are talking a lot about stuff like two weapon fighting Paladins with 4 attacks per turn. Getting 11 attacks in that three rounds is quite doable at 5th level (take the Dual Wielder Feat, grants a bonus action attack on top of TWF with Nick), and making that 8-9 attacks is even easy (either take Nick or some option allowing a bonus action attack...Polearm Master leaps to mind). To say nothing of Attacks of Opportunity and so on. Assuming anything resembling a reasonable to-hit (and Paladins can buff that a few ways...Devotion and Vengeance both buff it a fair bit) that's gonna more than make up for the damage pretty rapidly.

tbh nystrul's magic aura is the back bones of act 1 of my campaign like if a devil can just cast magic aura to have it show up as a humanoid and then disguise self/seemless/alter self to appear as a humanoid and if its a large creature they drink the diminutive potion they can blend in with human society and no one will ever know

RAW Phantasmal Force can't move WITH the target. You can conjure an illusory spike field around an enemy, but if you try to blind them by putting something on their head they will obviously just move their head, even by accident, and the illusion remains stationary in the air.

@@jackbarman7063 Exactly. It doesn't say anything about moving, therefore it doesn't move. If a spell description doesn't say it can do something, then it doesn't do it. Nowhere in the spell does it say the illusion can move or be animated, therefore we should not assume it does something the spell description does not mention, because you cannot prove/say a spell does something through a negative. Even in Pack Tactic's example of putting an Iron Maiden around someone, if they suddenly jump in fear of it appearing around them, their body will go through it, which would likely be enough to prompt a Study action, and then you essentially used a 2nd level spell to take away one action from one creature, which is something Command can do to two creatures at that level, or at that point just cast Rime's Binding Ice.

@@floofzykitty5072 the phantasm can be a creature, which indicates that it does not have to be a static image. The 10’ cube is only a constraint on the size of the phantasm, not the boundary of its movement. If it can move then there is no reason to think it must stay within a 10’ area. It can move around then as long as it does not become bigger than 10’ in any dimension.

Also it doesn’t describe the illusion as an image (which is static) like for minor illusion but a visible phenomenon. Major image is superior in other ways, being able to affect multiple creatures and not requiring an initial saving throw.

also Chromatic orb is guaranteed to bounce if cast at 7th level or higher, as you would be rolling 9d8-11d8 for damage, guaranteeing 2 or more d8 to be the same

For Magic Aura, you can’t combine it with Suggestion. A person who is magically compelled to do something is not willing.

2 things I’d like to note: Hunter’s Mark actually got changed from what I recall, I believe it works with any attack roll, not just weapon attacks. Not super relevant but sometimes it might come up. Counterspell is a lot stronger on the player side on average because a lot of enemies don’t actually use slots, especially these days with modern design. They just have flat uses.

True strike, From unusable to basically better divine smite on any melee spell casting class that can replace an attack with a cantrip, so all of them except Paladin and Ranger.

Not really, since you’d need to pump both Str/Dex AND your spellcasting mod for both the cantrip and other attack to have good hit chance & dmg. You’d be better off using GFB or BB since both those would deal more dmg and only require one modifier to benefit both cantrip and weapon attack

Armor of Agathys is pretty nice on Moon Druid now. And Halflings typically weight 40lbs so it's easy enough to ride a Vulture (same for most small races; mediums can't ride it anyways).

I missed the update to find familiar, glad to hear you can freely choose even though the list barely adds anything. My favorite new options are baboon (has actual hands), badger (burrow), crab (aquatic blindsight), giant fire beetle (illumination), and hyena (a mount for small characters)

I think Blade Ward is pretty good for Eldritch Knights, who not only do not have that much spell slots, but also can just cast this spending one attack instead of their whole action, and also tend to have good AC to begin with which makes the effect even better.

So does he just completely miss the purpose of divine favor? Its extra damage on every attack, no concentration required. Its a better use for a 1st level spell slot than divine smite is now. Since paladin can only do that once per turn they might as well pop divine favour on round 1 and now its good for that entire fight

It depends on the length of the fight. If you're getting three or less successful attacks out of it, it's not as good as a Divine Smite (which will always do damage since it's after the attack), and with Searing Smite it depends on how many turns it burns for how many attacks you need with Divine Favor to be better. I do think he's heavily underestimating it, but it does legitimately depend on how long your combats are and whether the Paladin can get extra attacks somehow. If your combats are, like, two rounds and your Paladin isn't getting extra attacks somehow, then it's...not great, though it escalates the longer the combats go and the more attacks the Paladin can make per turn. At higher levels, a higher level spell slot can up the damage of Divine Smite and particularly Searing Smite as well, so there's that, and if you have a Bonus Action attack you always have to compare the 1d4 per attack vs. the full attack's expected damage, if you're casting it in combat, which makes it even more dependent on combat length. None of which is to say it's bad, I strongly disagree with that, I think it's a great and very powerful spell when used properly, but you do need to gauge when to use it if you're using it during combat. It's almost always great if you can pre-buff, though.

Eldritch Blast is mostly the same but there are some changes too invocations that interact with, mostly repelling blast got restricted to Huge or smaller. Shillelagh tho, due to changes in magic initiate (druid), you can now make this INT based, which allows for a SAD Eldritch Knight or Bladesinger build. Since neither club or quarterstaff are finesse tho, doesn't work for Arcane Trickster. I think Resistance and Guidance should both have been bonus action (since concentration and their effects do not justify a full action) with Resistance increasing damage reduction instead by Proficiency Bonus, not as much as actual damage resistance but more than the spell gives in this form.

I think Blade Ward is alright. If you get it off before combat, it's more random, but +2.5 AC is slightly more effective than Shield of Faith's +2 AC. Shield of Faith is easier to do during combat though because it's a Bonus Action.

the main thing chromatic orb has over magic missile is that it upcasts much better, as it is essentially exponentially scaling since both damage and number of attacks increases

Just looking at the odds of the Chromatic Orb spell bouncing at level 1 (3d8)... 53% and at level 2 (4d8)... 78% (each time, it can bounce twice)... (not sure what the odds are you will get it bounce twice by having a 78% chance hit back to back) But overall this seems like both a powerful and fun spell to cast!

I'm looking forward to your Nystul's Magic Aura video. It looks like it was meant to be a dm tool spell to be used to mask their bbeg. So if the king is an undead, he could have Magic Aura cast on him and appear as a humanoid, so the Paladin wouldn't be able to immediately figure out he's an undead with Divine Sense. He also wouldn't be effected by Turn Undead, which is pretty interesting. However, the loose wording of the Mask effect definitely makes it a very powerful player tool, especially when combined with Suggestion. However, any tricks involving Planar Binding or Magic Jar would require the enemy to fail 2 Suggestion spells in a row, which could be hard to pull off, but definitely not impossible.

wait wait wait. If Nystul can make a lich unaffected by turn undead then it basically has to be able to make such a lich vulnerable to hold person/magic jar etc. Also while the old version did have wording problems from being possibly limited to divination spells and "revealing false information" to whether targeting restrictions counts as "detect creature type", the new version seems crystal clear to me. Spells of any school and magical effects for any purpose now simply treat the creature as the new type. Simple, straightforward, and broken.

in sleeps defense, It is more useful for bigger enemies with high hp pools. There is no longer a hp limit for the spell, so it could theoretically even work on the tarrasque. It still sucks though because they need to fail 2 saves, which the main targets are going to be good at succeeding, and you would have gotten much more usability if it were still a widespread lil guy dropper
