Always Board Never Boring takes the next step towards painting his copy of Advanced Heroquest by taking a closer look at the doors. In this video he goes through a very simple paint scheme for the doors, and talks about how easy they are to break.

That would be cool, but I'm not sure what the market would be now for a game that generates so much from rolling on tables. And Games Workshop will probably choose to continue down the Warhammer Quest path instead... unless Cursed City has put them off.

Thanks. If I had a broken one I definitely would have done it in the video, and if I ever get hold of some broken doors (or some of mine break) I will do a separate video on it. By my reckoning, you need some 2mm diameter magnets, 1mm thick. You place one where each of the hinges broke off on the frame, and one inside each notch of the door (arranged so the ones on the door adhere to the ones in the frame). You lose the "swinging" feature, but you can pop the doors in and out as needed.

Maybe if you can find a less intact door, you could experiment with how to fix it with magnets and so on. Either way great video as always

I'm always annoying mildly that doors in dungeon crawlers always magically disappear rather than act as a strategic bit of cover, so always prefer a swinging door!

Lego rubber has a bad life thoguh. Much of the old stuff either goes rock hgard and cracks or starts to get sticky as the rubber begins to go liquid again. Sets from the 90s are particularly bad for this. Lego is also made from ABS and not styrene.

Really nice job on the door 👍 In these modern times it would seem sensible to keep the original doors away from the play table in order to protect them as much as possible and use 3D printed alternatives that are easily replaceable. It's nice to have original doors but if they are so fragile it seems pointless to risk damaging them when less precious options are available. BTW kid gloves not "kid's gloves", as in goat kid leather - very thin, soft and flexible. Not very animal friendly but it is a very old saying! 😁

There's no point collecting this stuff if I don't use it. There's also no point picking out instances where I mispronounce or misspeak. I do it all the time, even though I work from scripts. I'm a writer, not an orator.
@spacedock873

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I understand about wanting to use the stuff you have but I think that worrying about breaking a part every time I used it would detract from the fun of the gameplay for me. As a simple viewer I do not have a script for the video so have no way of knowing if what is said is intentional or accidental. There was no intent to "pick you out" on accidental errors and to be honest I haven't noticed you do it before which is why it stood out for me. I feel that you do yourself a disservice saying that you are not an "orator" as your style is relaxing and informative and I cannot see how your delivery could be bettered for the content that you produce 👍

Thanks. That's very kind of you. My original comment was made in a hurry this morning and probably came across shorter than intended. I'm definitely not a natural speaker. There are a lot of processes involved when recording, and it's a miracle I get anything edited and uploaded! I get where you're coming from regarding how the fear of damaging something would start to impact on your enjoyment. That's understandable. For me, collecting, repairing and painting these things is done with the intention of using them. I get a lot of joy and satisfaction out of using the original components. I would rather do that and risk the damage than put the doors in a box somewhere never to see the light of day. Having said that, as I mentioned elsewhere here in the comments, I have enough doors that I could set aside six of them to preserve them and ensure my copy of Advanced Heroquest is always "complete," while still using the rest to play with and have that original aesthetic.

Great video as always! In my set, I have a couple of doors where the keyhole and metal decoration are different from the door you painted in the video, which I also have. Don't know if there were two different kinds in the box from new?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
There were four different designs that I know of (I have some of each). There are: 1. Fancy hinges with no thumb latch in the keyhole (the one I painted in the video). 2. Fancy hinges with a thumb latch. 3. Horizontal bracing bars with thumb latch. 4. Horizontal bracing bars with no thumb latch.

The doors were also used in the 1989 first edition of Dungeon Bowl, you got 4 doors in the Dungeon Bowl box, I have six in my DB box. I also have three sets of advanced heroquest, I collected them when the popularity of advanced heroquest was next to zero, So I have lots of these doors. They look good painted up but are functionally useless, I use better 3d printed doors for advanced heroquest nowadays that actually open and close without the door falling off its hinges.

I keep a set of six of these to have the game in “complete” condition, but prefer to use a set of original Hero Quest doors for their sturdiness and ease of use.

That's a good plan. As I have a lot of these doors I'm going to keep using them, but I will always keep a set of six set aside for exactly that reason - to keep the game complete.

I don't really bother using the old doors anymore. They are really easy to break in play by snapping off the bases, it's just a matter of time no matter how careful you are. I've never actually broke the hinges though. I used the old Mage Knight Dungeons doors as a replacement and they work great. The are also wider and open smoothly. That said, these doors look great on WFB terrain and they are very useful for that. I have dozens of them and I think all my WFB building have these doors on them. They really spruce up the cardstock model GW used to do. Then again, if you have the models you may as well use them and break them. They are only going to get more brittle with age and break anyways.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are very fragile. But I enjoy using the original components. As I have so many of these doors, I am working on the basis I can stick six in the box for safety and still have more then enough to game with. That way I have a "complete" copy of the game in pristine condition and can enjoy my old-school aesthetic as well when I play. Neat idea using them on the cardstock buildings. But a pricey option these days. I saw someone selling one of these doors on eBay for £12 recently!

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Indeed. About 3/4 of ebay sellers really have no idea. I see old SPI white box series games listed for $500-600 and they are tops in perfect shape worth $100 for the rarest ones. Or the twats trying to sell sealed 90s GW plastic for crazy prices. You know $300 for a sealed box of 8 plastic beastmen and such. Yeah ok dude. You can buy 25 vintage 80s metal ones for less than that.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

As soon as something is sealed people think they can slap any price they want on it. But eBay is a very strange place. I've seen people trying to sell the cardboard bits you push out of the middle of HeroQuest doorframes before, like they're some kind of rare part of the game you would want.
