I've been training a lot of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I love to grapple on the ground, learn how to adapt and work, even when I'm in a bad position. But I really do miss the part in between standing and ground work... So I decided to join a Judo dojo to learn what I believe is one of the most important parts to become a complete practitioner. Hopefully I will be able to put as much heart and love into it as I'm trying with BJJ. Training Both is awesome!

Yes but don´t foreget to train the mind, BJJ usually train for competitions and they teach more or less the philosophy of the martial arts, train your mind, read books like "hagakure" or "the book of the five rings" algo watch videos of others martial arts and learn about them, like the discipline of kendo or the determination of ninjutsu that´s how you become a complete practitioner in my opinion (sorry the bad english, it´s not my language)

Their Judo club started a "Dads" course late last year....I signed up with some of the Dads...and like my sons, I love it. Enrique has the right idea - the key benefit of judo for LEOs is that you can potentially incapacitate the subject with a throw without putting yourself on the ground. If you do wind up there, judo is just fine as a submission art - ref. Helio vs. Kimura.

anyone knows if i can do any higher belt moves if im a white belt? i've trained judo with my dad (2th dan black belt) - i've only trained it as a white belt, but i know all the moves.. now, in a kumite.. would i be able to use my arsenal of moves, or would i have to stick with the white belt ones?

judo over bjj and km because you can practice all techniques against a fully resisting oponent, and it can cause massive ammounts of damege (or not depending on your mood) to people at the same time. You really get a sence of what works for you. Also judo and bjjs origins are in life and death combat

i plan to take judo classes because i am joining law enforcement, but my father suggests i take something like krav maga for the fact that it has effective striking techniques as well as defensive. the saw i saw it was that when struggling on ground with a suspect would go a lot smoother if i took judo, any martial artists out there, can you help me out.

It depends on the gap in strength. Depending on how good your technique is the larger the gap can be in strength with you still able to throw the person the worse it is the more strength you need. Obviously to optimize your chances you want to be as strong and technical as possible.

I notice with the new judo rules they are allowing more time for newaza and in recent competition I have seen a lot of newaza ippons. My old sensei specialized in strangulation and taiotoshi. Even today, years later, the thought of him still makes me nervous. I drink to him.

BJJ is developed for ground work, but it's developed for finishing the fight on the ground, where as Judo has a much stronger emphasis on pins. Unless you want to get pulled up on Police brutality charges every other week I'd say try to avoid snapping peoples legs. Japanese Police do a highly effective form of Judo with take downs to pins and some Kata. Ideally - do Sambo. It's Judo, BJJ, Steppe Wrestling and Striking. good self defence moves. They look similar to the ones I saw in a class of traditional jujitsu I've attended. My problem was however that I don't believe these would work on a resisting attacker who might also be considerably stronger than the defender. I decided becuase of this to take sport judo, I think the sparring in it will give me a physical edge, even though the techniques might not necessarily be that great for self defence.

I'd take Krav Maga for something like law enforcing. Judo will certainly give you an edge. BJJ is good if you can take your opponents to the ground, remember BJJ and Judo is for competition, I recommend Krav Maga because its designed for actual Combat but Judo and BJJ will certainly add techniques to your repertoire.

I do not insult (I hope I don't), I do arduously call gracie/Brazilian jiujitsu a plagiarized art any chance I get. To prove my point regarding Judo vs. bjj, I entered a NAGA tournament back in February of this year and Won the Gi-bjj portion of it. I will be in my first Judo tournament this Sunday in San Diego, hoping that with a good performance I may be considered for a promotion (still a white belt). Following that competition I plan to enter all the bjj tournaments near Tucson AZ.

I am 40, and was introduced to Judo by a 70 year old gentleman that I used outweigh by 75 pounds. He did not tell me that what he was teaching me was Judo, He called it Self defense. He could have killed me at any time when we first started training. I immediately learned the meaning of Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort. My suggestion for you is to learn the history of Judo and its Samurai Jujutsu roots. Make sure that you learn the combat style of Judo and stay away from tournament Judo.

At this point you probably already chose your martial art. But i wanted to tell you that: In judo you need to have at least 5 years turnament experience (training fights are just not that intense) to really profit from your judo experience in street fights or such things. It takes very long to master the techniques in perfection. And only then u can use them in stress situations properly

. I learned Judo back when it was for kicking ass. I lived on a Navy Base on Guam and my shishou was a USMC instructor. I have never failed to execute an ippon seoi nage in a street fight. With an arm lock when possible. I didn't roll the guy gently across my hip I pulled him all the way over my back getting him as high as possible before striking him with the earth. Open hand strikes, pressure points and other mean stuff.

+andocrates thats great for self defense and stuff, but when creating judo Kano took the things that created too much injury for his students off. The idea of judo is to have a safe practice, but there is nothing wrong with being able to defend yourself using it

Mr. Kano wrote a book called Kano Jutsu. There was no lack of techniques that cause severe damage, injury, and even death. The removal of these techniques where done by other people. Mr. Kano was a Aikijujutsu master before he created judo, a more modern way of defense, for the modern times of Japan during his days....

Sorry you are misinformed. Kodokan Judo was created primarily for Professor Kano's studies of Tenjin Shinyo-ryu and Kito-ryu styles of classical Jujutsu. These were the only styles he gained teaching certificates from. O' Sensei Ueshiba learned Aiki-jujitsu from Takeda Sōkaku.

BJJ is way better for the ground in a way. IMO Judo's ground work is a lot better for me,since you're taught to get out of bad grounded positions and then go for the attacking while BJJ teaches you to use the bad situation to your advantage.Sure its techniques are more complex and technical and whatnot but what wins ground fights is a good,fundamentally sound,not too complex game. And Judo is way better for law enforcement cause of all the stand up throws,restraining holds,takedowns etc.

I would suggest for you to develop stand up skills. Boxing would be a great first option. If you take Krav but lack in coordination, none of the techniques will work. I know, because one of my training partner's practiced Krav for over 5 years before joining the gym where I train at. Now that he has acquired some grappling skills, his Krav has improved (Krav is just dirty fighting, not an acqual art).

BJJ is way better for the ground. Judo is actually not really a martial art for the ground its focused mainly on takedowns while a small portion of it is on the ground. BJJ's main focus is on the ground while a small portion of BJJ is takedowns.

They became illegal to keep sport judo pure, it sucks, but generally leg/ankle picks/grabs for takedowns are no longer allowed, except as counters to your opponent. This was done to stem the wrestling influences on judo people were getting too hunched over instead of the traditional vertical judo stance.

But that what you said is mostly true with the US Judo dojos. In the US mainstream Judo is nothing more than a martial art of throwing,which is utter bullshit. Here in Europe and Asia its the most complete and widely practiced martial art and self defense system. And they emphasize a lot of newaza and successfully utilize all techniques.

Why not use English alternative for the Japanese phrases? For example, instead of tory and Uki, we can say "attacker", and defender. That way it will be easier for us to learn, and apply these concepts because it is in a language we can understand
