Advanced Piracy: Disadvantage - A SSBU Ridley Guide by Vreyvus

In my opinion, the second most important aspect of playing Ridley is how to deal with disadvantage (second to neutral of course)!
I see a lot of Ridley players out there struggling with this, so I decided to cook this one up as a priority.

There were definitely a lot of good tips in this video. I had no idea you could deliberately bump your head and then grab the ledge like that to avoid counters on Wing Blitz. I don't think I would've ever thought of trying that.

Dair spike hitbox is atrocious! Some more weight, airspeed and less FAF on single plasma breath are on my wishlist right now

Wow, beefy up b-ing gordo is really smart. More Ridleys' need to do that, Dedede gives Ridley a lot of trouble. Also I was a big fan of your Bowser in 4, do you still play him at all, or do you not like the changes? Maybe you just like Ridley more?

I still play Bowser, but not all that much lately. I still got some cool stuff going with him, Ridley just has a deeper and more interesting meta to me, thats all!

@@Vreyvus Woops, guess I should have looked them over! I completely agree that a single fireball takes way too long to react after. You'd think it'd be a faster option right? Feels almost pointless at times to belt one out over just going all in. Air speed and weight would be very welcome too. How about higher midair jump distance or is that part of air speed in some way?

First of all, this video deserves way more likes and views, your guides help so much! I have a question, I see you tech chase and apply platform pressure with down b but I can never seem to land that sweet spot. Usually don’t get the timing right and end up too high or too late and get punished or dodged... is there a trick to it, or do I just need to get gud?

The trick is just practice really and learning how to space it. You can just go into training mode with any platforms and practice hard. I always look at Ridley's fullhop animation for when I think its the right time to perform down b. Wavebounce down b can also help with the spacing, but a lot of the time the skewer on a platform tech chase is a guessing game.

Same, I would love to know his thoughts on them, and whether or not Ridley was greatly improved by the buffs or if he’s just slightly better and they don’t matter too much.

@@Darkon2050 He was definitely greatly improved. He now has a kill combo at around 85% with uptilt-upair. Upair is way better now in every possible way and an easy way to kill (Ridleys #1 issue besides his disadvantage state is killing). He can also kill earlier with side-b and backair, which are some other slight buffs that help him out.

I haven't made a video, but sometimes I tweet about some cool stuff and also some thoughts. The up air buff was one of the better ones he got, as well as Wing Blitz improvements. He might've been low-mid tier but personally I feel he climbed up to high mid at this point.

really good video, but I think you left out an important detail Since you were already talking about how great ridley's ledgehang hitbox is, you should probably have mentioned how absurdly high his hitbox shifts the instant you let go I swear the moment you hit down/away at ledge you pop up by like 2 pikachus, it is nuts and can get the unaware hit a lot

2 Pikachus in height sounds a bit too overdramatic! But yes he’s easier to hit airborne near ledge than hanging, but that goes for most big body characters. Personally i haven’t found this to be much of an issue though!

I loved this video, but I’ve found that sometimes when you use space pirate rush VERY close to the blast zone, Ridley’s arm goes backwards into the blast zone and will cost him the stock, when you could’ve lived otherwise

Any map where the platform goes to the blast zone, I try to avoid using space pirate rush. I think you can cancel it and kill but it's tricky. I think they designed it like this because SPR would be OP as hell.

Reset joystick to neutral or hold any other direction but down. Holding down always lets you bypass the ledge.

Unfortunately there isn’t much of a Ridley-specific way of dealing with this matter. Zoners are the toughest archetype for Ridley and I just loathe the MUs as much as every other Ridley player.
