100% agree! New factions are always nice and the Exiles and Partisans deck improved the base game so much but ADSET made the whole early game so much more tactical and gave the players so much more control. If there's one part of game design I love is control over your own destiny and in Standard setup, there was too much up to chance. The designers really care about the future of this game and they are not afraid to fix something in the past to enrich the experience for the long term.

As a video gamer, I find it interesting how balancing updates are introduced here for a board game. In video games, these are simply installed via a software update. Here, rules have to be adapted and stickers and cards have to be purchased in some cases in order to carry out this balancing yourself. I hope they don't have to readjust too often anymore. Unfortunately, you only find out about these updates if you are deeply involved in the community.
@nitrorev2 жыл бұрын
They stickered boards were unfortunate but necessary as it's hard to predict how a game's meta will evolve when the gameplay is this deep. ADSET on the other hand was a very elegant way to "patch" the game as they included the cards in the expansion pretty much free of charge and they are more user friendly since you can follow the card without needing to turn your player board over. I appreciate the fact that they're willing to errata and patch their game after the fact, it shows that they're interested in the long-term enjoyment of the game and that it's still a living game that's getting better with ever release and iteration. Maybe someday I'll make a video explaining all the changes that have occurred to catch everyone up if they have old components.

Root was always a Solid game but people like me who play it A LOT start to notice little imbalances and things that people might not notice in their first dozen games or so. They welcome you to start with Standard setup and eventually work your way up to ADSET but honestly, my recommendation of to just move onto ADSET as quickly as possible. It's much more fun and opens the game up to more creativity and it balances the seat order a lot better than standard. Just stack the faction flop if you want like only put beginner friendly factions in the draft, but other than that, playing ADSET doesn't introduce too many more complications (they should be a lot more clear after watching this video) and the benefits it brings are enormous. It really improves Root.

Makes it MUCH harder to just start out building and KNOWING your safe and protected from 3 sides, you will have to be vulnerable on one flank. However it IS a buff on maps like this specifically (which I dont think ever got played where I was) where you usually only got 4 warriors, since the corners only got 2 connected paths.

Hi great guide! This is kind of a specific scenario but I’m just curious. Let’s say in advanced setup that lord of the hundreds and two vagabond cards are dealt out. The lord of the hundreds sets up first and then the vagabonds are chosen. Wouldn’t only one set of ruins items be set up? Or would you add a second lot anyway because that’s typical for normal setup?
@nitrorev2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! A second set of ruin items would be placed in this situation only because of the second Vagabond. The reason is written on the cards. You always put out a set of ruin items when a Vagabond is chosen but for Lord of the Hundreds, it says you only out out a set of items if it hasn't already been done (by the setup of a Vagabond for example).

You state that players get 5 cards dealt early in the process and then later in the set up they discard 2 and keep 3. But when are we allowed to look at the 5 cards? Do we do this at the point we get them dealt, or just prior to discarding? Mu assumption is that we see them straight away, otherwise what's the point, but I can't see that confirmed anywhere.

So if I’m not a fan of the drafting factions rule would adset still work if I just let players choose which factions they wanna play as and then mutually agree who sets up first and the order
@nitrorev2 жыл бұрын
That's totally fine. Advanced setup was designed for competitive play because the community really needed a fair way to set up the game that was balanced and equitable for people last in turn order but if you're just playing a fun game with friends, there's nothing wrong with adding house rules if you enjoy it more. Keep in mind it might hurt the balance a little bit for some player because the final version is what was actually playtested and approved by Cole Wehrle but you don't have to worry that much for a casual game.
@soucaco2 жыл бұрын
Not a correction because you explained it exactly how the rules do, but you really only need to lock the insurgent faction if all other factions you drafted are also insurgent 😬. If at least 2 factions are high reach, at least one is guaranteed to be picked.
@nitrorev2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the rules are written to be easy to follow and avoid all these complex clauses. In the Winter Tournament hosted by Guerric Samples, they modified adset to be as you described where you only lock the last insurgent faction if there is only 1 red faction in the draft. If there are 2 red factions in the draft, the last insurgent isn't locked. I prefer this way personally but I must teach the rules as they are written.

@nitrorev2 жыл бұрын
Great question! If you and your friends are still in the process of learning the game or you're teaching new players, you should just give them factions you think are the right fit for each player. If your group is at the point where everybody knows the game, ADSET is objectively better. With ADSET, the turn order is very balanced with faction choices and the new setup options make for more interesting opening decisions. With just the base 4 faction in standard setup, you're really busy only going to see 4 configurations based on which corner the cats choose. Now the possibilities are enormous even with just those 4 factions. Definitely switch over to ADSET as soon as possible.

@@nitrorev Thanks for the advice! Though I'm not sure if I read it anywhere, but would you happen to knoe if the "buffs" that the Cats, Lizards, etc. got be added to the old setup rules as well? (Homelands, 4 extra cats, the 2 acolytes, etc.)

@@Mangaboy5398 No, old setup is the same as always. If you decide to play with corner setup, you may decide to give the buffs as needed and I strongly advise you do it. This would be a home rule however as standard setup is not something they wanted to go back and change, but instead they are just abandoning it entirely in favour or ADSET. Should the "adjacency homeland" rule, when possible, be interpreted to minimize the number of adjacent homelands, rather than all clearings being available? In other words, clearings that are only adjacent to one homeland must be chosen over clearings that are adjacent to two or more homelands.

If you cannot fulfill a "two or more clearings between" requirement, you may choose a homeland that is not adjacent to enemy homelands. If you cannot fulfill a "not adjacent" requirement, you may choose a homeland that is adjacent to an enemy homeland. (Basically, think of this as "Try to set up as far away as possible.")

Can someone explain to me why the turning sideways of a possible grey card is only relevant for the last dealt out card?
@nitrorev2 жыл бұрын
Basically, it's to ensure that at least 1 Militant (high-reach) faction makes it into the game. So if let's say we deal out 1 red faction and then 4 grey factions but didn't lock the last card, theoretically, everyone could choose just the 4 grey factions and have no red factions in the mix which would lead to a lopsided game. To avoid this, you lock the last insurgent faction (in theory you could lock any grey faction) and this guarantees that at least 1 red faction must be picked. If the last faction that is dealt is a red faction, now there's at least 2 red factions in the flop which guarantees that 1 must be picked so there's no need to lock anything. The big question is that if there were already more than 1 red factions in the mix, why lock any at all? I think the logic is partly to keep the rules simple and also to maybe give a little bit of extra power and choice to the players further up the turn order who would otherwise maybe be stuck with the worst choices.

How can draft system solve the reach problem when 4 insurgent factions dealt out in a 4 players game?
@nitrorev2 жыл бұрын
Root is a self-balancing game and the more advanced the players are, the more they will be able to balance the game. Reach becomes less restrictive the more total experience all the players have. I've played very low reach games that felt very balanced because of the alertness of the players and I've also played games with very high reach that had a complete blowout victory because the table was inexperienced. Experience will balance a game better than reach and as you gain familiarity with the game you can start to abandon reach requirements all together.
@nicholasrawlins71153 жыл бұрын
I feel like in the situation with the lizards, instead of just saying, “well, I get to setup anywhere now” you should take into consideration the number of homelands a given space is adjacent to. Some were adjacent to two or more homelands, but only two spaces were adjacent to just one homeland. Seems more in keeping with the general idea of the advanced setup.

I understand where you're coming from with this but it's important to remember that in Root, we don't follow the rules as we feel they should be but based on how they're written. @nitrorev2 жыл бұрын
It's not a stupid question at all. The rules of the Keep are that as long as it's in play, enemies cannot place pieces there. Under most circumstances, the Lizards couldn't choose a homeland adjacent to the keep because it is a homeland and the Lizards are required to be 1 clearing away. That said, if the map is very full and it's impossible to choose a clearing that's not adjacent to any homeland, the lizards could then choose a clearing adjacent to the keep and then they would distribute their warriors to adjacent clearings that aren't the keep because the rules of the Keep are always in place.
