Advanced Sketchup - Solving Terrains - Pt. 1

Our Advanced Sketchup series is geared toward seasoned Sketchup users and doesn't waste time going over basic concepts. The first set of lessons will cover a variety of different scenarios with terrains and terrain modeling. A variety of plugins will be used and the keyboard shortcuts will be fast and furious.

For a "free sketchup" modeller who is doing his head in trying to shape terrain on my house site before I do the job twice with earthmoving equipment your video almost motivates me to upgrading to Pro....so I can use these super cool plugins. I discovered that "cut and fill" is only available on the Pro version. Sigh....! But I am teaching myself how to do it the old school way. Great job and great modelling.... can I send you my terrain? (He says only half joking!!!!).

Cool video, Adam! But frankly, even though soapskin is quite impressive and fun, (I was sure you'd use curviloft to fill the planes but soapskin was clever!) now I'd do it with QFT, VT and SubD. The old fashioned way you do it is too approximative and if there are changes in the layout you have to redo again from scratch... yet I was in awe when soapskin, extrude tools and curviloft were released! ;-) Cheers!

Ryo Inagaki Curvilot doesn't really work when trying to skin something with more than 4 sides. it creates a mess. This was a method I came up with specifically for landscape design. in theory with landscape modeling, you have your hard surface areas(walkways, patios, driveways, walls, etc.) and then you have the soft areas in between ( lawn, flowerbeds). the hard surface areas need to be precise in order to pull quantities, but the soft area just need to be averaged skins in between. with flower beds they are often mounded as well, which is another reason for soapskin bubble. If I was doing something besides landscape design, then I would probably approach it differently and just drape the road and pathways onto a large terrain. Thanks for the comment!
