I do NOT know why no one on KZbin tells anyone this.. BUT here's the REAL secret to slipping.. when fighting, don't look at the opponent in the face, stare DIRECTLY in the center of his chest, because simply for the non-fighters, if they/you look in the face the guy might intimidate you. From there you can see his arms move.. his legs, body, feet, you can see everything by staring at the center of his chest. Now just do what he does with the head movement thing(In part 1 of Advanced Slipping), and trust me, when you see punches you'll be like a ghost. BUT warning you! Do not expect to slip all punches automatically on the first try! You have to practice it every day to get your body's reactions just kicking in! Slipping is pretty much all about reaction and countering. Then, after practicing for about 6 months or even 3 months, you'll see HUGE changes and how you won't be controlling your body, your body'll automatically just move. And this also explains the reactions people get when they turn around, and there's a... soccer ball coming for their head and they hurry and duck. THEY didn't do it. It was all reaction, don't expect punches like "Oh he's gonna throw the right, so I'll move to the left" DONT DO THAT! It'll screw you up!

+Batman The tactic of "looking at the chest" is commonly referenced a lot and meant as a secret for beginners. When you reach some level of aptitude, you don't have to stare at the chest either because you can literally feel all his punches coming. Just from the angle of his spine and the way he throws his first jab, I can already guess where the right hand is coming from and the left hook following up behind it. The way his torso turns, you can also guess what's coming back. And when you get even beyond that level...it's less and less about avoiding his punches and more about setting up your counters. It's HOW you slip his punches that can help you pull him or tilt him even more off balance so you have more space to land the counter you really want.

Lot of people on here commenting thinkng that these slipping techniques don't work raving on but he has clearly said advanced meaning for someone who really knows what they are doing. not for beginner's. I'm still learning and know if I tryed this i would probably get knocked out. and here are beginner's thinking they know more then someone way more experienced. anyways nice vids man i've learned heaps and getting better.

It's not the moves that are wrong it's the way you are teaching it. As you teach more you will learn to teach on an easy level field. The slip to the inside of a jab is great move....must be timed with a counter upper cut....or short over hand right with upper cut combo. We open angles to fill them...wasted angle is time you give them to think. Great vid none the less much respect.

Yes. When it works, yes you can. I don't like doing that because I don't know if it's a body shot counter. Also, I like using the natural flow of movement. What I teach allows me to stay with my own natural flow of movement. If you can stick that elbow out in a way that flows with how you move--great.

+expertboxing your videos has helped me a lot. Please tell us what are the most important basic techniques that beginners skip and do mistakes.
@tjp2131
@tjp2131 7 жыл бұрын
Basic techniques that people make mistakes with and are commonly ignored are: 1) Keep the chin down! Not too tense, you don't wanna feel a burn, just keep the chin tucked away and eyes up and out. 2) Hands up at all times and elbows in tight! You throw a left? Keep your left shoulder blocking the left side of the jaw and the right hand UP! and vise versa. 3) Constant side to side head movement! Don't let them time it, but keep the head in constant motion. You throw a right hand? Move your head from the right side to the left with the shot, then back. Keep moving. 4) Find your range! Do you fight in close? Or do you use long range and stay on the outside? Perhaps you're good either way... figure it out! 5) Punches in bunches! Close the distance and POW-POW-POW POW and get out of there! Why land one or two when you can get in 4 or 5? String your punches together. 6) Stick and move! After you land a punch or combination, move your head immediately. If it makes him miss then come back with another and move to the other side. Don't waste time. 7) Get superior angle on your opponent. You have twelve rounds to get it. Plenty of time. Find the right split second and pivot to the side of your opponent, use this brief moment to do damage that won't help your opponent last. Put everything into a power shot to the liver or kidney's then get back outta there. To set up this superior angle, you can fake moving left and jolt to the right if he's chasing you, then you have his whole right or left side open. Bring a KABOOM to the organs!

I like your style as well I like my style. I boxed for ever when I was young back in the 70s. I'm going on 63 now & have diabetes & other ailments I was 250 lbs then & I'm 200 lbs now My doctor told me I'd best lose this weight & or as, in fact I did have a mild heart attack with out even knowing it., I started to go back to boxing & the kids were just too young. So I tried going to an MMA club & I told them I was not a kick fighter & they said they'd spar with me & not use their feet. I participated awhile & right off the bat I was defeating them' & actually I was even holding back, Now I'm talking about I was fighting with pro MMA fighters as they do fight for a living at the casino's & other establishments & they are at between the age of 18 & 35. Well to make a long story short they got agitated at me & said they weren't going to fight me any longer with out their feet as I was supposedly cramping their style. So I told them & said I told you when I came in I was not a kick fighter, so anyway go ahead & use your feet, & I'll do what I can do.And they did tried to break my knees, kicked down low & dirty, swooped me off my feet dropping me on my ass & I'd quit after that for Just for awhile as I did not like the punishment as I had no defense against kicks. But I did get myself a heavy bag & watched on You Tube all the MMA fighting & focussed on the best defense. I knew most good MMA fighters were only good if prior they were boxer's & they win most time boxing & or sucker hits or kicks But I needed to defend myself against the feet & now my design is defeating the feet with my technique. I still am not or do I want to be a kick fighter as I always said kicking is for girls. Sure the feet is powerful but with my technique' I destroy their feet. Especially with my tornado twist blaster, & elbow basher & cress cross whip. I have right now got over a hundred & 30 video's on You Tube training defense against kicks. I was 1st beat up, & insulted when they claimed MMA fighting is superior to boxing, I don't think so! I came back & whipped the crap out of all of them one at a time at my age. Now who's laughing. LOL If you will check me out on You Tube Under Dave Overbey Fight training. Make sure it's me as their is another couple Dave Overbey's of no relation fighting in MMA & They aren't me I'm The one & only old bald headed idiot. LOL. When I fought competition years ago, they called me sting em dead Dave Overbey & in the streets i was known as not Rocky but as Punchy Puncherallo LOL At my age I feel pretty good or I could be fooling myself but I feel good anyway! I fear no one & dare everyone. I don't think I'm cocky but for sure I'm confident. Any way watch my technique to defeat the feet if you will & get back to me on your thoughts. I know I'm not cocky because actually I'm pretty humble & considerate. Watching my video's I think most people doubt on account I teach it at a moderate pace instructing the technique as I'm not show boating like the really cocky ones. I'm trying to teach the habits into a reflex & into a thoughtless reaction to every action & for it to be mastered one must slow down & develop the correct habits over the muscle hustle as the true muscle is your muscle memory & leverage.Thanks Punchy. Thanks again I'm Punchy Puncherallo my grand son will be the next rising star. Look for Mason Yount. He's only 7 now but he's going to learn slow & easy the technique. He won't be trading punches as so he will deliver.

Good Video. I like the techniques you are demonstrating. The only thing I want to say is that on some of your slips that you are choosing to use against certain punch angles are good at avoiding the punch, but they cause you to be out of position to counter. You would have to either make another position shift to fire off thereby you would have to wait to catch them in the recoil or overextension(which are both methods of counter punching) which would depend on your reflexes being faster then theirs(thereby they can counter or block your counter. Whereas you should choose slipping angles that allow you to attack at the same time you slip the punch (the best counter punching method) thereby using their own offensive power against them as they step into your counters. This also will make them reconsider firing off certain shots because your taking their angles of attack and using it against them. Your slip should position you in such a way, that you can smoothly fire off your counter shot while slipping, and maintaining balanced footwork to allow an exit route. You don't wont to put all your weight on one leg or the other, because that leaves you susceptible to feints or follow up shots that take advantage of you dead weighting one of your legs. An example of this was when you leaned back to block and avoid the left hook or left hook feint, in that moment, that reaction can leave you in ill position to avoid his right hand. This is what Marcos Maidana did to Adrien Broner to score big hits and knockdowns in their fight. That being said, this is just my humble opinion. Keep making the great videos. Also one other point. When you slip you should not be completely flat footed, as this makes it more difficult to shift your weight and move quickly in different directions. Your slip position should be the same as your punch loading positions thereby the footwork is exactly the same. Example, slip to the left should have same foot work as you loading your left hook or left uppercut, or jab, that way you can seamlessly fire off your counter shot in the same moment instead of having to reset your footwork to throw the punch. That what I mean by putting yourself out of position to fire a counter in one motion. in a couple of your slips both your feet are flat. That can't happen. That mistakes also makes it harder to move in a given direction if you have to quickly pursue or avoid your opponent immediately after. Your slipping, punching, loading, leaning, etc, etc, it should all look the same and be done in the same rhythm, and it should all be serving a purpose. To set up an attack. If you are slipping to just avoid an attack, you are wasting your slipping skills. Again, this is just my humble opinion. I'm sure you know all of this already. So perhaps you can do this video and add in the counter punch to show people how it all goes hand in hand. Also you should show them how the slips flow together avoiding combinations while countering. I think that would be helpful to a lot of people. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for the long comment and well thought-out explanation. Everything you say has perfect logic and is definitely something I teach in my other basic slipping videos. The technique I share in this particular video is definitely more advanced...and with the application of "advanced" technique...it also requires "advanced" strategy. The advanced strategy that I would use for this technique takes advantage of the many ways to bait an opponent. Ideally, in a basic slip, you try to attack ASAP. But for an advanced slip, you have to get slightly out of position yourself to set up multiple slips...which can help to make your opponent miss wider and wider or throw more and more off center...at which point you can return to your center and then take advantage of a more vulnerable opponent. I mean sure....all the basic slipping techniques still apply...and then of course there's the more advanced type of slipping like Pernell Whitaker or James Toney where they really get guys out of position.
@RaphaelFuentes
@RaphaelFuentes 9 жыл бұрын
expertboxing I see what you mean. Those type of leaning slips would definitely create wider misses. In that regard your presentation is very well done. However I feel the need to issue a disclaimer about the baiting aspect of the exaggerated leaning slips to set up offense. Forgive me in advance for the long explanation to follow. The drawback to such a style is that you need to have lighting fast reflexes and razor focus and anticipation in order to see and anticipate your opponents movements and respond accordingly. You have to be cunning enough to know what positional leaning slips will cause what reactions to bait the opponent into doing what you want him to do. You must also have a eye for discerning feints precisely or you will find such slips can cause you to be out of position for the follow up attack(such as the first fight between Weidmen and Anderson Silva). Pernell Whitaker and James Toney possessed those traits in abundance and as such could pull off such amazing slips by moving at the last possible moment to cause the opponent to overextend. This advanced form of slipping is very high level and takes a ton of cardio to pull off in an extended match. A person not possessing those traits and incorporating these slips against an experienced competent opponent will be putting themselves in dangerous situations needlessly. Look at Roy Jones Jr. He was a master of these type of slips and used them to bait opponents and deliver devastating counters, as well as confuse opponents to deliver unorthodox attacks at unique angles due to his superior speed by closing distance lighting quick. At his peak, this type of slipping and thinking served him well. Once he got older, his reflexes waned. He still possessed his experience, his skill, and his sharp acumen as a boxer, but without the physical tools, this style of slipping caused him to be out of position to defend follow up attack and land consistently. This led to him being knocked out and out-boxed numerous times in the twilight of his career. Look at Floyds more proficient defensive slips. Just as effective as Pernell's movement, but he is always in position to defend, attack, and move in one movement. There is no wasted movements or exaggerated movement to bait. His skill depend on his mind and minimal movement, taking advantage of the natural opening that reveal themselves when the opponent attacks. That is why Floyd's opponents start to become gun shy and confused. Their bread and butter attacks become his avenue for offense, not only is this highly effective it is amazing difficult to prepare for. Thus Floyd's opponents seem confused on how to attack him as the fight progress into later rounds. To me that is the most advanced level of slipping, because with practice and a sharp mind, that style can be adapted and perfected regardless of physical tools. Whereas this albeit more exciting version of slipping is an amazing skill. Only the most elite of athletes can take advantage of it at the higher levels of boxing. For the common man, they should concentrate on learning the skills that will serve them as they grow older and weaker. The skills that depend on physical prowess are like the strength of a flower, destined to fade as time stretches out before you. But with all that being said. You are right, the slips you are showing are advanced and take great skill to use to their full effect. I just caution a laymen or novice from adapting this style without possessing the physical traits, talent, and cunning necessary to maximize it. Using this type of slipping incorrectly can and result in getting caught flush in the boxing world. All it takes is meeting someone who has better timing and understanding of manipulating cadence and you will find yourself in deep water. But if you are a supreme athlete with dexterity, skill, and mental acuity to pull this off, than I tip my hat to you. For you sir are a hell of a boxer, and I would pay good money to see such a boxer compete. I guess that what I'm saying is that its rare to see anyone who can imitate Pernell Whitaker spectacular defensive style with the same level of effectiveness on a world stage. He would literally dodge five to six punches standing in the same spot using just head movement and leaning slips. You can't teach that, that is god given talent sharpened by incredible training and precise technique. So I can teach Pernell's slipping style to the next boxer, but the chances of him coming close to Pernell's level in defense without possessing that same talent level. Slim to none. Sorry for the essay rant, I'm just trying to say that if people try imitating some of the stuff your doing in this video with out the prerequisite talent and physical tools, it wont end well for them. There are much safer slips and defensive counter measures of advanced nature that even laymen can apply skillfully regardless of physical nature with hard work and practice. But if your going to advocate it, I just think you should present these techniques to people realistically. A frame by frame presentation makes it look so easy (one punch, one slip), but if you showed what it would like full speed with follow up slips and movement while your friend fires away (the footwork on the transition from slip to slip are very important) it would make this demonstration much stronger. Something like that at the end of the video to illustrate how to put it all together would be an effective way of presenting this. It would also show how skillful such a display is and if this is a realistic option to pursue for the viewer. Again if you read all this, Thank you. I love your videos and everything I just said is my humble opinion. These are truly advanced and beautiful skills, so if people can effectively incorporate them, then they owe to themselves to put them in the tool box. Thank you for sharing this video.

RaphaelFuentes I recorded the video exactly the way I intended...which is a simple concise look into one aspect of "advanced" slipping technique. It does not strive to be a complete or comprehensive coverage of the entire realm of advanced slipping technique and makes no claims or disclaimers. My goal is to focus on what I want the actual technique itself and not distract viewers with the unnecessary. It's a tool for them to play with at their own risk. There is no time to go over every single detail. When people need more, they ask questions and I do my best to answer each question in a new video. That's far more effective than to answer every single question that hasn't yet been asked all in one video...in fact, it's impossible. And it's impossible because I am so trained that it's hard for me to remember to teach people things that I already do naturally. Until people actually ask me in regards to specific details and nuances, I literally to not have the awareness to know that oh people need this, and that, and etc, such and such detail.
@RaphaelFuentes
@RaphaelFuentes 9 жыл бұрын
I understand and you are correct. It would take forever to go over every detail, and even if you did, some people still would not be able to grasp certain principles without burning those principles into their bodies with countless hours of training. But don't sell yourself short. I think you could break down a comprehensive slipping vid. It would just take a lot more effort and time. So I understand why you chose to keep it simple. But I take exception with one thing you said just now. This is in no way a criticism of you. But as a teacher of both martial and educational fields I have to address an aspect of what you just said. The greatest teachers and trainers of any art do examine their art to grasp every nuance and detail. It is not impossible to translate that to a student. They strive to understand the principles of that art so that they can adapt it to different situations and people. They can break down a techniques principles to core components and render the complexities of that principle in simple terms and simple applications. Thus they can adapt those techniques seamlessly to any person, situation, or scenario. The smallest detail is the difference between being correct and incorrect. So you should dwell upon the smallest details of your technique when training, thereby increasing your understanding of it and allowing you to better pass the knowledge along. I am a martial artist who has studied a few systems, boxing among them, and I constantly examine every detail of every technique presented to me insofar as how I can use it, defend it, and take advantage of it by disrupting those principles that are essential to executing it when another opponent attempts the technique against me. If a person can not do those three things and explain how and why it works or does not work. Than their grasp of that skill is lacking. One aspect of this attention to minute detail if cultivated is the ability to discern other peoples physical and mental principles. To be aware of your own incorrect and correct principles in life also makes you cognizant of others. Due to this, I can tell much about a person within seconds of meeting them. The way they breathe, the way they distribute their weight when standing still and when moving, how aware they are of their surroundings, what they are focusing on, what they say or don't say, how balanced or unbalanced their gait is, their overall body language. All of these things inform me of this person health, cardio, training or lack thereof, focus, demeanor, personality, and intent. Without exchanging a word, I know how to tailor my training session, interactions, combat, etc, etc with them based on this information. What I'm trying to say is what separates good teachers from average ones is that they strive to illuminate the smallest components to increase understanding not just for the students but for themselves. So if you realize that there are aspects you are naturally utilizing but forgetting to explain due to it being second nature to you, then you should dwell upon those aspects and mentally cultivate it until it is both conscious and unconscious knowledge. As a fighter, this is not necessary. But if you teach, this is the most fundamental and important of aspects to keep in mind. You Can NOT depend on the student to ask you a question that will jog your memory to recall important details, for the student with his lack of understanding may not ever ask the question in the first place. They may take what you say at face value and move forward not properly understanding or utilizing what you passed on to them. Even worse is that you would not even be aware of the missing link in their teaching under those circumstances. An excellent teacher is aware of every detail in their art and can communicate and transfer it without fail due to that diligence. So what I'm saying is, and this has nothing to do with the videos you post. I love them, and look forward to watching more; Do you want to be an average teacher, a good teacher, or an excellent teacher? strive for excellence and be a good teacher. Saying you forgot a component because it is second nature to you is the mark of an average teacher, Based on your videos, I believe you are a good teacher, so don't sell yourself short never stop examining a technique with the utmost scrutiny for at that moment your own development ends. If you read all of this, God bless you. And again I love your videos. I hope you don't feel like I'm taking shots at you, I'm just very passionate about the arts and enjoy a good dialogue with another person with knowledge and understanding, and also manners. Thank you sir for conversing with me.

If you try to use this move to slip one punch, it will seem very difficult and awkward. If you try this against somebody throwing multiple punches this style of slipping is easy to do because it keeps you in rhythm with your opponent. If you're trying to be fast as opposed to trying to be in sync with your opponent, then yes it will be very risky. Either way this is advanced technique. For those that can use it, great. For everybody else, yes it's highly risky.

jokes aside, you guys have been great. Some of the slipping techniques though, i wont recommend unless you have the agility of a mongoose. Knowing how to move is one thing, timing is another. I would still recommend blocking, footwork and head movement for newbies. But since you put in the word ADVANCED, people should understand that this is way WAY BEYOND BASICS. And you dont get to the advance stage without putting in the the time and the work. When you train regularly you get comfortable enough with the basics that you start to improvise. Your instinct is sharp enough that advanced slipping comes natural.

Trading a straight right to receive a left hook to the body isn't always a good idea. For one thing you could miss. Another thing is a left hook to the body can be more damaging and hinder your movements. It still comes down to whatever you want to do.

@@expertboxing i would do it with mouth Mount (Google it), and with gopro's own editing software (FREE) You can remove fish eye effect with ease. If CAM on head is not an option, maybe a good camera man with a gopro on a pole/stick standing behind you, acting like your shadow, more like an birdseye frame shot of what is happening. Would Even be a good video with the CAM stationary above You facing opponent with You in rear frame of CAM aswell. 🥊🥊🥊

Believe me, I know exactly what you’re talking about but it won’t look as cool as you imagine. The thing is we need the camera fixed to the parallel to the floor and not my head. Because you want to actually see my head move. Fix the camera to my head and it just looks like the world is spinning all crazy (but my head stays in one place) like I’m playing Halo during an earthquake.

Straight left hand inside you to rember gard up. For straight punch
@Serganten1
@Serganten1 12 жыл бұрын
Although I find it hard to believe that the "bodyslipping" from a left hook to the body is a safe way to do it. Seems to be a very risky move, I don´t think that many boxers are fast enough to take back the guard when a straight right comes after the left hook. And when the stomach is going back to neutral position it would cause a lot of damage if a straight is colliding with it. Don´t you think? Great tips btw, I will try the slip against the straight

This is advanced technique and the video looks weird as hell with my gloves up to my face. When I find videos of top pros doing this...like Toney, Whitaker, even Canelo....all of them have their gloves lowered a little bit. Ultimately, I decided to focus on explaining/displaying the main principle than trying to abide by every single textbook rule in boxing. About turning the head away....yeah, they do that.

It seems funny on video but in actual sparring, the movement is more fluid and natural than it appears here. Especially when you're fully extending your arm and letting it drop down to your waist instead of rushing to pull the hand back. My focus is more on getting my head out of the way than blocking my body.
