I found the starter kits helped me a lot to learn the rules and play better... My Scottish friend thrashed me nearly all the time before that. Now we have more competitive games - and I have been winning scenarios. He has been playing from the 1980's so knows the game better. He has all the core modules and I SK 1,2 and 3 these are great for focus. Plus I have the Swedish Volunteer core AP - the only one he doesn't have. I enjoyed learning of their involvement in WW2. Two of the scenarios I did win were playing the British South Staffordshire regiment which coincidentally is where most of my family came from. So was quite pleased by that. Looking forward to playing scenarios with Stukas as "Birds of Prey" was fun.

I am so glad someone made a very basic video that we can share with people who ask this same question!

The odd thing about about ASL is the fact AH have created an incredibly complex simulation of WW2 tactics but its played on ludicrously abstract map boards. It could be said its just a game rather than a wargame, in fact its similar to table top miniatures games but they have the excuse it incredibly expensive or impossible to play on realistic terrain.

Hobbies are expensive. Advanced Squad Leader being too complicated to be played is a myth that this channel dispels with successfully I find. As for the terrain, you can argue that in real life nobody walks along a hex grain. Advanced Squad Leader is the only tactical wargame where players can enjoy combined arms and plausible outcomes. Thanks for watching.

@@georgehiotis My point is the fact that map boards are the problem not the complexity. I think the ASL historical modules are great because abstract terrain is not an issue.

No offense at all meant - but from the question I had ‘What is Squad leader?’ I came away knowing its a boardgame that might make you money if you keep it a long time. I dont think you answered the question - is it any different to Axis and Allies?

We are still living with the consequences of WWII. It may sound strange, but many felt that the Western Allies lost the war and at the very least nothing was gained. The people of the UK definitely felt it. So, the argument is that the Soviets were the true victors. Churchill knew it, Patton knew it. FDR thought that if he gave Stalin whatever he wanted we'd be good pals. Sounds familiar if you know about our current situation with China and how that began. It wasn't Nixon because something happened before Nixon. That something was called FDR. Millions died due to decisions FDR made. That all said, I remember looking at the shelf in our local game store (hobby shop). ASL beaming at me. I was a kid and had to save every spare penny to purchase the rulebook and Beyond Valor. Then the wait was on for Paratrooper and the coveted chapter E that I was keen on due to my grandpa serving with the 101st during the war. After that it took me a solid year to come to grips (and just enough) with the rules to attempt to play. Well, I'm still learning how to play. Love the vids and lessons and I appreciate your labor of love for the game and the content.
