Nice Emmons! I like using strings one and two a lot, too.

To palm block doing this I have to relearn and do it the way you do here, with the pinky and ring finger curled under, instead of being straight. Lotta learning going on here.

As an intermediate player, this is exactly what I was looking for: what's the deal with the 1st and 2nd strings? Seems like most instructional pedal videos having you using only the 3rd thru 8th, so it begins to seem a bit pointless to have 1 and 2 until you watch something like this. Thanks!!

Very cool...but the volume of the steel could come down a bit in the vid..compared to your words...just sayin...but thankyou! It does open doors on this very challenging instrument

Please help me I am going mental! I can’t pick and then block like he is doing m, without repositioning the hand/arm. What am I missing here?! Can’t progress can’t follow. So frustrating. Many thanks!

one ace in the hole when using the 1st and 2nd strings is the vertical position of the bar. Keep in mind that as you play an ascending lick, for example, your bar should ascend with the strings your plucking -- playing a phrase with a 8-6-5 string lick the middle of the bar should cover those notes, whereas if you're up on 4-3-1 the tip of the bar should be on the 1st string. If you play the first string and don't have an easy way to block it based on the phrase, simply lower the bar back towards the low strings and you'll get a mute effect that way.

@@peterbriggs6375 Hello Peter, and many thanks for your kind reply. I'll be more careful about positioning the bar. It's a bit of a workaround in terms of hand-movements-mysteries, but it surely helps! I noticed that what you describe is more useful when the lick goes down the strings from high to low (towards the player). If the bar moves away from the player, I can't take advantage of that. But still, it helps.
