I think defamatory is fine for everyday use if you're addressing defamation and not just someone who's being an arse. Arduous is a great word for comedic effect, like using it to describe simple tasks like washing the dishes or taking the trash out. I think preposterous is also a fine substitute for absurd, at least in a work environment, rather than school. All depends on the environment and people you talk with, I think these are fine for common usage.

English is my second language. For a romance-derived language speaker, e.g., Spanish, these words are rather easy because they come from Latin, and already exist and are used in Spanish, Portuguese, etc. For example, meticulous is meticuloso, arduous is arduo, pensive comes from pensante or pensador, austere is austero, capricious is caprichoso, defamatory is defamador, nascent comes from nacer (to be born), etc. The challenge however, is to pronounce them correctly in English, especially for a foreigner,

Though you might give me some credence to my study I know there are still a myriad of English words and expressions out there for me to explore. You are the epitome of the interactive English teaching. As some quid pro quo to your conscientious teaching I'd like to write a plain comment on each of your lessons using some of the words in that lesson. I'm not sure why this video was recommended to me as a native English speaker, but I guess we can always learn something new! I certainly enjoy using nice vocabulary that my colleagues at work (they are also native speakers of English but make silly mistakes ["miss read" instead of misread, "aloud" instead of allowed, etc., quite embarrassing!]) don't understand (but pretend to 😂) Happy learning to all of you!

Great video! I'm an English teacher preparing students to take Cambridge Exams. One of the key challenges of the C1 Advanced exam is the time pressure you may feel during the different sections of the exam. To overcome this challenge, it's important to practice time management skills during your exam preparation. One way to do this is to simulate exam conditions as closely as possible during your practice sessions. Set yourself a time limit for each task and try to stick to it strictly. This will help you get used to working under pressure and make it easier for you to manage your time during the actual exam. If you found this helpful, I have more resources on my channel that you might be interested in checking out! Good luck!

Truculent is an interesting one. The word "truculent" in French (written the same, pronounced differently obviously) means quite the opposite. It means funny, joyful, colorful! After reading about it, it does come from the latin "truculentus" meaning "seemingly violent", and it could have that meaning in French too (although it's not the main one)! Very interesting

English has words with similar meaning from two main sources. From Germanic sources via the Anglo-Saxon and from Latin via Norman French. I had a professor that when teaching English vocabulary to Spanish speaking students found that they had difficulty learning the short “easy” English words but were able to almost immediately learn the long more complex words . After some time she found out that these long complex words came from Latin and they were cognates to Spanish words since Spanish came from Latin as French did.

@@InteractiveEng Yes, I second Vasilis's suggestion, and would like to add further to it as follows. You are teaching the meanings of words as a thesaurus would, simply likening the word to others as if they have the same meaning. This teaching the use of a thesaurus in place of a dictionary is common in recent years by school teachers, and contributes to fuzzy thinking and imprecise and extreme speech of our young. Synonyms seldom have the same meaning, but are a cluster of words of similar meanings, in grades of severity, viewing the subject from different angles, emphasising either more emotional or mental perspectives, or applying to different situations, and so on. And the Latin, Greek, French, Anglo, Germanic,... origins provide us with the more precise meaning and distinction between synonyms. It is the distinction between synonyms that provides for accuracy and precision in speech. To teach words in clusters of synonyms _without_ distinctions in their meanings makes for fuzzy thinking and vague communication, and to use the most unusual or "educated" sounding of a cluster of synonyms without distinction is just pretentious and vague. The word intelligence comes from the Latin inter, meaning between; and legere, meaning to choose; therefore: the ability to choose between. Intelligence is the fineness to which one can perceive distinctions within any medium. In other words, intelligence is the fineness of one's mental discriminatory unit, and verbal intelligence is one's ability to select words to represent and communicate the fineness of the distinctions or discriminatory units that one can perceive. We want people to be able to think and communicate in fine and precise terms, not in chunky thoughts and vague and extreme words as so many young people are doing nowadays. So lets teach the distinctions between synonyms, and the words origin makes doing that easier to teach and easier to learn and remember.

As a native English speaker, I am told my vocabulary is very good and in sampling this, I did not find any word unknown to me. Excellent presentation by the teacher, but a word of caution to the learners: do not expect all native speakers to understand you; some will be relatively uneducated and so not know such high-level words. I find I frequently have to paraphrase because I use a fair amount of advanced vocabulary in my everyday speech. So, in a nutshell, pick appropriate words!

@EssentialEnglishIdioms
@EssentialEnglishIdioms Жыл бұрын
It would actually be unusual to encourage English learners to learn 'high level words' in an effort to sound smarter than the average native speaker. In fact, most of these words are almost never used in daily conversation by any native speaker and I take the whole 'sounding smarter' thing as a way to get clicks. The goal is to sound fluent, not smart. In fact, attempting to use a five-dollar word when a one-dollar word will suffice does not make you sound smarter, only pompous and arrogant, if not also a bit stuffy.

@@EssentialEnglishIdioms Yes, of course, my point was that the vocabulary of some native speakers is poor. A foreign speaker with a high level of English would have to put some things in simpler terms to be understood.
