One good winching method that you didn't mention is a 2 rope 2 snatch pull that gives you an effective 4to1 ratio, think it's called a Spanish Burton? Winch line has a snatch block in the middle then back to the car and the second line goes from the car up to your pull point and through a snatch block, in scenario 1 that would be the tree then it gets hooked to the first snatch block. The winch pulls the the first snatch block towards itself that in turn pulls the on the second snatch block.

Scenario 1, tripple line pul : All the benefits of the tripple line you have lost by putting the strap into a P formation around the tree, that is rated at considerably less than anything else in the system, bearing in mind you have a smatch block that is likely to fly if that brakes there should be a double strap there and the P form on the dead end of the cable as that has less stress on it. Ideally both should be doubled up.

They have turned a 5t strap into a 3.75t strap and hooked around 10t of load to it if the winch gets full load or the vehicle gets caught on something extremely dangerous

Tip for scenario #2 -- In this particular case, turn the steering wheel to full left lock instead of full right lock. It'll help the front end climb directly up and out of the ditch, instead of back down into the ditch where the front end can get whacked by the opposite bank, or become more deeply stuck in soft mud. Yeah, it's counterintuitive, but having done hundreds of recoveries over my working life, I can attest to its effectiveness.

Glad to see someone mention this. That’s what I was thinking, the winch will take care of the rear, let the front wheel direction take care of the front.

Great tutorial. Would add that coming out of a ditch turn the wheels into the ditch to pop the vehicle out while keeping it perpendicular to avoid burying or damaging the front.

In the first scenario that tree off to the side taking the end of the winch rope will have an effect on the direction of the pull, because there will still be tension in the line to that tree. You’ve also lost some mechanical advantage by not having all lines in the same direction. In that example because the first tree is so big, to get separation of lines you could have the second anchor slightly higher up the tree. Nothing wrong with how you did it though just clarifying that the direction of pull will be somewhere in between the two anchor points, which can be used for advantage in some situations.

One detail in the 3:1 first example. Having the extension strap choker style around tree is going to take a de-rating for strength, typically 20%, and then you have the single leg of that winch extension going to the double line pull leg(s) of the winch rigging. I'd take a careful look at the capacity of that winch extension strap in comparison to the strength of the winch line (x2). Other than that, well done and well produced video.

All good from what I've seen the only thing I'd like to add is your damping bags should always have some rocks or some sort of weight in them otherwise they aren't heavy enough to be effective. Other than that all good.👍

Double or triple rope means nothing if the rope is too short. If you have a 20 meter rope this may be okay for a double lines. But if you don't have 20 meters and nothing in front, such as a strong tree, doubling and or tripling the rope may be okay in some instances and that is if you have a strong tree ahead of the 4X4 and it also depends on the incline, too steep a track, more rope needed. If you do such trekking that involves high climbs, carry a winching spike with a shackle that is designed to be hammered into the ground in places where trees aren't an option (you can't always be in a treed area). Adding two spikes also lighten the load when you use double lines and are good for beaches and sand dunes. This video is a bit hard to believe because if you have to do all that is demonstrated in the video, you have to bring a large tool box with all those pulley, ropes and other attachments.

Very good Video, my only question is, why have your anchor point sling so far up the tree, would down as low as you can but just above the ground.
@4wdsupacentreAu

Question: At 3:10 in the video: Isn't it incorrect to put a choker around the tree as seen here in this video instead of a tree saver that makes a U shape around the tree. what am i missing? Other than that, Excellent video mate!
@4wdsupacentreAu
@4wdsupacentreAu 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, We would recommend as seen in this video however it may depend on angle of tree as well. Cheers Saleha
@stewartj3407
@stewartj3407 3 жыл бұрын
@Paul Ferrari it isn’t “incorrect” at all. It just depends on what you need for the situation. Here they needed the full length of the strap to make sure they could reach, the length of the strap would’ve been halved if they done it the basket way. Yes it’s a little bit weaker, but your well within the safety margins of that strap that neither way is correct or incorrect, just whatever is needed for the situation. And the tightness around the tree won’t hurt the tree because of the width of the strap.
@pescatoralpursuit1726

I would think running the line as a choker would put full strain on each end whereas rigging as a sling divides the strain in half to each end.
