This is a video done as a supplement to a watercolor class taught by Gary Tucker in Boston. This video demonstrates how we think about unity - especially in the finishing of a painting. We think about elements that will create unity from the initial design through the technical application as well. Often, however, unity does not present itself until the final strokes are made and the piece gains an added dimension.Sometimes we finish a painting and there are parts that stand out too much or look unrelated to the painting in general. I discuss and present different strategies for those final adjustments and how they help to :Unify the painting.
A tutorial accompanying this video can be found here:

A list of materials that I use can be found at

That's beautiful. Gorgeous. I love how you talk to us about the painting while it's being done, because it gives us the idea of how we could strategize our painting as well. I really like these type of videos from a Master Watercolorist, because it is so helpful for us to develop our own style. It's like, we have to have a balance between our left brain and our Essence - Right Brain, which does the most spectacular work when you allow that Essence aspect to do what it does, and just allow the personality, the left brain, to follow through and just to sit back really, and observe! Haha! Thank you for the video. I'm going to check out your other videos too.

You're so right about the many different ways to do a painting, each equally valid. My titling is done before or after depending on the painting - sometimes it comes easier than others.

Thank you Gary, I enjoyed watching the video.I found it very absorbing. It reinforced and reminded us of vital techniques that most painters already know and try to use, but we often omit. Pleasantly presented in a fresh context. Every painting is different from every other, but should be painted using a similar set of rules. The video Confused me at first! I am English and was initially puzzled why a painter from Essex would have an American accent! Thanks again.

I found this not to be useful to me at all. You said nothing about the wash or colors or anything else you were doing. Not even the weight of the paper. I would like to have followed along but you offered up nothing but empty words.
