As a child, my favorite Christmas tradition was the Advent calendar (I grew up Methodist). Now as a much older adult, I own three Advent calendars. One is based on the traditional Christmas story, one is based on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", and one is based on C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". We also have an Advent wreath. I believe it was first the British which traditionally put Christmas trees up the first Sunday of Advent when it was introduced in the early 19th century. Christmas trees were originally a Lutheran custom which later Catholics adopted. The very first Christmas tree in the Vatican(!!) was in 1982(!!). (Since there was a Polish pope, that makes sense.) The Vatican puts it up Christmas Eve. There is a clever stage sequel to "Pride and Prejudice" in which Elizabeth and Darcy (now married) are one of the first in their town to put up a Christmas tree and the neighbors aren't entirely sure what to make of it. (The play is "Christmas at Pemberley".)
