I wholeheartedly agree with your points about railroading/sandboxing. They are harder to run and in some cases even play in than "railroad" adventures especially for inexperienced DMs/players. One of my groups has players who actually have a lot less fun with sandbox adventures because they feel like there is no real story to follow. Granted that might also be just my inability to run those damn sandbox things but that just furthers my point about them being harder to run. Also I just ordered the Monstrous Lexicon. The Elephant-people look really fun with the iron karma and gemstone soul.

Sandboxy hexcralws is dediciding on a hook and biting, so if the hook is good enough, why not enjoy the adventure? once you bitted the hook it's the same kind of adventure. About third of first person, I sometimes start in third person as a player till something clicks for me and suddenly it's first person. I think of it like finding the character.

I got choked up as a DM when I unintentionally destroyed my wife’s character’s backstory. She is an elven Druid who’s people have gone missing. Her backstory was that she was missing for maybe 200-300 years. In the last session, an NPC recognized something she was wearing and let her know it was thousands of years old. I had hinted to her that her people were the tribe that have now become the Drow. She actually started crying and had to walk away from the table. I felt bad and also very proud because her noncommittal character attitude has now become explorative and vengeful.

That is amazing! I've gotten choked up at the table too before, it's so cool that we have this game that allows us such deep story and character building.
