Adventure Rider Pilgrimage Through Australia's Outback - That wont polish out! - Eps 7

Join this intrepid group of Perth based Adventure Riders as they embark on an across Australia adventure thru the heartland of the Outback on their quest to rediscover the natural beauty of Central Australia including Uluru, Kings Canyon, the Tanami Desert and finally culminating in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia with Gibb River Road being the highlight.
In this Episode, the group continue along the Gibb River Road; one of Australia's iconic Tourist Routes. It aint all plain sailing though. The Pentecost River is their first obstacle and they strike trouble crossing the Durack River bed. The Barnett River also provides some challenges.

I have this crazy feeling I've watched this before.. Having done the Gibb twice,this brings back great memories.. Those roadwork crews have a thankless job. Quite a bit of excitement this time. Nearly sixty years ago when I worked in western Queensland tubeless tyres where not allowed, but they have improved quite a bit since then.Being a Baker by trade I have always looked for the best scone recipe, The best I have found is three cups of flour one cup of cream and one cup of lemonade . Keep safe.

Can use back tyre as a source of high volume compressed air. Pump up back tyre hard. Use a hose from one valve stem to the other. Remove valve cores to give max flow.

Ive often wondered about the so called advantages of tubeliss tyres when you cop a situation like that which could happen in many places i ride ie rocky fire trails bush tracks etc. Id certainly be carrying tubes and levers just in case.

@@AndrewTurner-d1y Which is what we did…carried levers and tubes just in case. Tubeless tyres do have their advantages…they are just a mongrel if you have to remove a tyre to fit a tube. A lot stiffer sidewall. 😞

We did the Barnett river a few years back and it was probably 400mm max. 3 days later it was 2m deep and 300m wide due to some very unseasonable rain. The catchments up there are huge and shit changes really fast!

Looked like a nice specimen of an Olive Python - they do tend to get rather large, since they can get to 4m in length this one has some growing to do :) Memories - the GRR, even after 30 years since doing it, is still a suspension, trailer, caravan and tyre killer.

The Fitzroy River Bridge was washed away the year prior. Every effort and every cent went into rebuilding that bridge as soon as possible. Local shires were stripped of any money they had and that was all poured into the bridge replacement. I think the roads are graded annually normally. I guess they can only do so much. Oh dear! Stalling in a river crossing would be nerve wracking. I have a brother driving trucks out of Darwin to places you've travelled in this series. 2-4 trailers is normal for him. Kakadu, Kunanurra and Halls creek are his main destinations. He always wonders why Motor bike tourers pick these roads and shakes his head at cyclists. I always wonder why overseas travellers freak out about our wildlife here. I'd sooner be confronted by a snake or spider than a massive big grizzly bear.

For your mate on the AT, once you have the high fender(guard) fitted you don't need to take the brake callipers off or loosen them to remove the front wheel, the forks will swivel enough to get the discs out/ in, just once the axle is out lift the wheel all the way up to get it in or out. Should have just gone straight to the tube and it would have been a 20 minute job. For those who travel on big bikes in the outback even if you have tubeless just make sure you have tubes as bent rims and tubeless are useless. Plus easier to seat a bead with a tube and a small pump. Mick

Seating beads always makes me do a YT search. I like the ' bicycle tube method' to seat the bead, but I've only seen it done on a trailer tire. The other one is jumping on each side of the wheel while the tire is supported by another to prevent damage. Again, on a trailer wheel.

Great video, thanks, you’re doing it tough. I thought I saw a head on the snake, a visible head, it’s probably one of our many pythons, do they have scrub python up there or is that east? The head of the browns merge into the body so not always obvious. Bit hard to tell at heart racing speed. I’m glad you did not run over it, it could have been rather slippery, like hitting a white line when you’re turning.

I have no idea if this would work but might be one to test in the garage if you pump up the car tire to high pressure then had a hose from the car tire direct to the bike tire would that large volume of air be enough to set the bead?

I have used this method before to reinflate bicycle tyres. Another viewer has mentioned it as well. The theory is sound…not sure about the practice. 😊

They've cleaned up the entrance to Home Valley. Where that grate was there used to be a collection of massive rocks right across the road and access on the bike was extremely difficult. Worse than the Pentecost Crossing.

Great video. Im enjoying the series. As an experienced engineer, i will say that the "hot final drive" precaution is unnecessary and a myth. The change in volume of the casing of your final drive as a result of cooling from say 70 degrees to water temp of 28 degrees would be significantly less than 1 cubic centimetre. Your final drive is not going to be sucking in water. That being said, having a break before a river crossing is a good thing.

There was a comment on one of my other vids from a guy who works on the stuff and he tended to agree with me. I have done a final drive seal on an earlier bike on that same stretch of road and had to get the bike recovered from Broome to Perth. There aren’t a lot of BMW Repair agency’s here in Oz. I’ll continue to take my time at any significant water crossings. Thanks for sharing your experience and taking the time to comment.

Oh sht at the last part. Hope the air intake on the GS is nothing like the one on the early R1200RTs, which not only constricts the airflow but lets stuff from near the front wheel height get sucked towards the air filter housing. Very nice drone flying & camera work .. someone's been practicing. Oh, and your bike should be able to take off just fine in 4th if your clutch is in need of replacing, don't ask me how I learned that :(

I hydrauliced an earlier GSA1200 in the Barnett River a few years ago. The intake was just at the right height to suck water in off the front wheel. BMW have made some improvements regarding that now…probably took the hint.

I use an old Version (V 11) of Cyberlink Power Director. Back then, you paid for it outright and could download the Software. Looking at their website it appears you can only get monthly subscriptions. Your data fields are those small boxes showing sunset time and eta and speed I couldn't work out the rest, was interested in what your keeping tabs of on your gps while on the move. Curious as to where you got the information on needing to "cool" the diff prior to splashing. At most the diff would be around 100C, probably a lot less. Given the high ambient temps even 60 mins of sitting I doubt the temp would go down that much. After years of working on driveline stuff with the auto companies never heard of it.

Put a tube in it , ive always ran tubes in my bikes. When you are travelling Close behind someone you dont get blinded by there dust , therefore if you sit further back you're sit in there dust , so ive noticed by experience sitting closer help

I'm a little curious about the way you crossed the Pentecost river. Firstly, why didn't you ride on the dry spit of land before moving into the water? Also, why weren't you standing on the pegs? That gives you much greater control when crossing such uneven terrain because you are able to shift your weight independently of the bike.

Yeah, nah. If only it was that simple. The bike and gear probably weighs 320kg. I'm about 84 kgs. The bike is a handful in snotty stuff and the 19 inch front wheel, along with the Paralever front suspension dont lend itself to behaving too well over the big rocks on that creek crossing. Hitting those rocks tend to throw the front end all over the place making control very difficult. Standing up would only make things more difficult and reduce reaction time if i had to 'dab' with a foot down. I understand the theory (this aint my first Rodeo) but in this case its easier to 'paddle' thru this obstacle. Thanks for watching.

Brakekleen and a match. Its butcherous but it works. Forget deodorant there's not enough flammable stuff in it. It will only burn ,not explode and inflate the tyre I always have a can on board to wash stuff off fir repairs and its a handy fire starter too

Both tubed and tubeless have advantages and disadvantages, depending on the circumstances. If it's a simple puncture, with a tubeless, you just plug and go without even having to take the wheel off the bike (I guess you know all this). Fitting a tube is always a good option when all else fails. Thanks for watching.

@@mongreldogproductions , you are actually far better off leaving a air cleaner until it’s pretty bad and then swapping it out for a new one rather than trying to clean it. Especially out in on a trip where you see people take them out, tap them on a wheel a few times and then put them back. That’s the worst thing you can do.

Speak for yourself mate. I’ve spent years working and living in Aus on and off. Got bit by a red back that was living in our post box. Still alive to tell the tale. Never found the wildlife to be an issue, as long as you leave it alone.

If you think about ti to much you’d never get to enjoy the outdoors here in Oz. The mozzies are the biggest pest. Most other things that can kill you will leave you alone if you leave them alone. 😀
