Getting the Chemistry just right in a lava lamp is surprisingly tricky. The fluid and the wax have to be such a carful balance to get the proper circulation.

The fluid in older lava lamps is perchlorate, which might kill you before it gives you cancer! That never stopped me from tinkering with it. I once sorted out how to make a lava lamp where the bubbling material changed color as it swam around. Unfortunately, the effect was based on unstable chemistry, so it lasted for only about ten minutes. But those were GLORIOUS minutes indeed…

What great ideas! If you make a terrarium video, you can add a piece of screen between the rocks (drainage layer) and dirt. You want the drainage layer to be dirt free. It's sole purpose is to hold extra water away from the dirt. I learned this from watching serpadesign on YT.

My favorites were the urban decay lava lamp and the terrarium one! Especially the fact that you didn't give up and actually tried again, which was actually pretty inspiring. Also if you added some water, dyed it blue and added some (small enough to fit in to the lava lamp) toy fishes to the terrarium one, it would look like a really cute tiny aquarium ^^

if you use a vibrator, a personal one works, you can either submerge it in the concrete or hold it up to the side of the form and it'll make the concrete more liquidy and allow it to fit into tight corners and fill voids a lot easier

You can actually put petroleum jelly on the wood prior to pouring the concrete to make it easier to release when it's done.
