I was on Carriacou visiting with my family during Beryl. It was quite a traumatic experience for all of us. Not just going through the hurricane and the fear that brought, but seeing the absolute destruction of the place I called home was even more frightening. The complete and utter loss and devastation is almost more than one can bare.

Fantastic video! Storm preparations are always anxiety-ridden as you don't know what to expect. Preparing for the worse and hoping for the best is the way to go. That monohull cruising around after the anchor failed is a little disconcerting as you don't know how much fuel they have, and if they have no motor they have no directional control. Just glad your boat and the rest endured, unharmed.

We spent 43 days sailing from Brazil, passed Grenada with Beryl approaching, turned our bow to Spanish Waters, Curacao. If Beryl is the thin end of the wedge, predicted in an above average hurricane season I am so glad we are anchored in Curacao.

Glad you guys and your boat are fine. It didn't touch DR, but the sea was insane! On the south side. I saw the videos, and some friends sent me pictures of the Malecon in the Capital. The aftermath wasn't terrible, but it lifted some concrete benches around the coast walk, that weighed a ton! Seeing that told me this thing was very, very powerful for lifting and throwing a few feet away benches made out of concrete that had been there for decades and seen many many other hurricanes previously.

I'll admit seeing people like you guys makes me wish I would have been a little smarter or life would have handed me something different because since a very young age I've hated the Midwest and any time living here but my parents were here and moving back to the islands is not cheap. Now I'm a parent and husband so it's gonna be at least two more years before my boat sees water and we set out for half of the grand loop and get back to Tampa where I truly feel at home. Working a 9 to 5 has never been me and I'm about as far away as can be from what I thought my life would be in high school. The loss of my father and sister. Finding the right person to spend my life with. Having kids when I never planned to and was told I never would. I'd take a hurricane any day over a 3 month long freezing cold winter with snow and ice and being trapped in the house. Good luck to you guys and enjoy living together in paradise

Hey thank you for the comment! One thing I can say, is that we believe God always has a plan but at the same time you can not wait for the plan to come to you, you have to fight for it. When you feel like you are in a corner...take a step back and try to look at it from a 30K foot view. Its is always easier to see the map when you zoom out. Cheers - Cole

When tying up your vessel lines or ropes to mangrove trees, always look for short lengths of sturdy, strong ropes to use as strop’s. Tie, those lengths doubled up around the trees that then come out to just near the Water’s edge of the tidal creek . Then, with your vessel lines, slip them to go through the eye or the loop and then back to the vessel. This is so that you can adjust the lengths when required, and also slip them out, leaving the strops of sacrificial ropes behind on the trees to retrieve at a later time if necessary.

Building codes. As someone who lives in an area that is subject to frequent hurricanes, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of rebuilding structures in accordance with modern hurricane codes. Yes, in the short-run, it is more expensive. But, over the long-run, it pays for itself many times over. Flimsy buildings don't stand a chance against even moderate strength hurricanes. They are just future calamities waiting to happen all over again in the next hurricane. The government of Grenada owes their citizens more oversight and guidance.

That actually is not universally true. If you live in a tin shack, you can put it back in few days. So there is some point in value/comfort of the house above which it is more economical to build better, but not below that.

Hurricane Beryl was a very unpredictable hurricane. I went from a named tropical storm to a named hurricane unleashing it's fury on islands leaving devastation in its path. Texas is now its next victim hitting shower as a Cat 3 i think. The weather systems are getting stronger and more unpredictable and stronger. They leave many lives claimed by its strength and many homes and businesses destroyed. The people of these hardest hit areas are resilient, but they know it going to be a long haul to get back what was taken. To these people i give my heartfelt condolences for the loss of loved ones and my hopes and prayers they do recover and rebuild these island paradises

It is so hard to know which way to go when a hurricane is headed to you. With Ian we almost had our daughter come down from Tampa to stay with us in Ft Myers, then we sent her up to Atlanta as the hurricane turned into a monster and we thought maybe we should move Reboot north up to St. Pete. Then we decided to stay put and spent the next few days storm prepping. Then our county declared a mandatory evacuation at 5 in the morning so we had to take our dogs and leave Reboot 😣. When we could finally get back through all the damage, the only time I cried was seeing her still afloat and mostly ok. We were very lucky, and my heart breaks for the sailors and the people of Grenada and Carriacou. I will help any way I can with RiseGrenada 🇬🇩 ❤️‍🩹

Egmont is a good hurricane hole. Our friends who sheltered there said they never saw over 40 knots. Our boat in Clarke’s Court had no issues, but several friends had damage to their boats stored in Tyrell where sustained winds were 150mph were experienced. We are lucky the storm was not much of an event in the southern bays

You are very lucky to have escaped the wrath of the storm. If it had wobbled even a little bit, as storms do, your outcome could have been devastating. Forecasting is not an exact science and to stay so close to the potential eye is not the best judgement for a skipper. Trinidad is barely an overnight from where you are located and every boat that sailed there to escape Beryl is 100% safe. Why did you not take this option? This would be the choice of an experienced skipper with the safety of the crew and vessel at heart.

Shit guys, no transmission and unlucky early season hurricane. Glad you're OK! What's the plans for hurricane season? Some land travel? We decided pretty late in season we would hurricane hole in Rio Dulce, Guatemala. We have significant repairs we need to do, and this is now the best place to do it. Otherwise we would have been over there in Grenada! Although besides the hurricane, very glad we came over here. Rio Dulce is AMAZING. Highly recommend. Very saddening to see Grenada. The people in Grenada (and especially Cariacou) are wonderful and such a shame to see the devastation. Grenada is where we started our sailing journey on Saguaro, and definitely a core memory for us. Been in touch with people we know from LTD Sailing about it and things to do to help out people we know who had businesses destroyed. SV Saguaro
