Honestly, when someone makes the "It's just my style" argument, I swear I can feel a little bit of my soul vanishing.

@violetmatoi7404 7 жыл бұрын
Monstrous Piratelord Well...I personally don't think that's fair to say since I don't think people should really "own" a style, you know? Like, artists are usually associated with the styles they draw in, but it's not like people can't have a style that's similar just because someone arguably more popular has that similar style. I feel you should judge the style on it's own merits rather than comparing it to someone else's style just to bring them down. It's really unfair. You feel me?
@HaruWuu

Violet Well people does have a certain style when they draw. I have a certain style when I draw. People does get offended because on how they draw. People attend to get inspired by other artists. People draw for fun and others want to become famous,etc. So I don't know. LOL.

Nightmare Well I'm not saying shouldn't be inspired by other artists or anything. If fact, it's perfectly fine to be inspired by someone else. My point is that people shouldn't "own" styles, pretty much claiming that it's theirs and theirs alone and that they can't be criticized or "copied"

I don't like spam either. When they mentioned Michaelangelo drawing ladies all big and muscle-y I remembered a lil art history tid bit. He drew ladies all muscle-y because he only used men as models, I think? Upon a little further research, it looks like it was a conscious choice that may have had to do with the attractiveness of androgyny during the Renaissance or something. Neat!

Ahhh, my fanart was featured, I'm so thankful QwQ Thank you so much Ponder! This video was really relatable- almost too relatable. I give a lot of critiques for a class, and it hurts so much that people respond to criticism like this all the time. When people respond respectfully to critiques, I always get so happy. I hate the excuse of a style. Sure, a person doesn't need to *accept* criticism when it's given, I understand that, but using the excuse of a style is an excuse that needs to stop. I'm going to make a video on how to respond to critique because things like this get on my nerves. I'd like to think that some people just may not know how to respond to critique or don't understand why critiques happen, but I know some people are just *that* ignorant.

Most of my artworks are pretty good, but I admit that I do have problems with anatomy and certain poses. The hands and feet are kinda hard to draw, but I'm trying to work on them. Other than that, as long as others on DA like my work, then that's a good thing. Also, there can be different drawing styles, but you still need to have a good idea how to draw a body, body type and more. I still like to read up on drawing tips to improve a bit. Overall, critques can be a hit or miss with writers or artists, but they're helpful nonetheless.

I find it very hard to believe this guy is married with children. I behaved like this when I was new to DeviantART and I took criticism as a personal attack. Eventually I realized that the criticism was there to help me and not to be hateful. In fact I’ve been able to improve on poses and facial expressions since I started listening to them and stopped making excuses. This guy needs to learn to do the same.

Broken Language Artist: My mentor is a famous artist from 70's and 80's. Me: Never heard of him so he can't possibly be that famous (I'll have to go check this out.) The bottom line with this is that both artists are at fault, with the artist of the piece he feels like his mentor and college act as his shield which is pretty cocky for an artist that does still need to work on their proportions; you graduating from a high ranking school doesn't mean squat if you're still not good at your craft. Then we have the critic who should've let things go the moment the artist decided to reply and disagree on about his critique (frankly both them should've stopped replying to each other from the start.) There is no side here in this situation and they both acted like idiots.

... w o w ... 3 years late but god . *this dude* . your face in the supergirl piece is a bad if you were trying to combine cartoonish and comic or realism together. the cartoonish design of the head shape combined with the realistic mouth and too wide of nose fucks with the over all aesthetic of the piece ( in my opinion ) . to me it just sounds like an excuse , a “Waaaah , ur critique hurt my feelings , waaah” sorta reaction, which pisses me off because i would love to have a critique like this on my newer pieces ?? even if it stung ? It’s well thought out, not mean, and as objective as an artist can be. This guy should really just of said “thank you, but i disagree” if he wanted to not listen anyway and then left it instead of engaging with passive aggressive comments. keep up the work, brooke !!

I'm 21 and even *I* take critiques seriously. I'm not a professional and I'm still a bit iffy with my style, but I still take constructive criticism on my work whenever I have the need to post it alongside the art I made. Animal wise, I'm quite used to the anatomy and it's a big strength when drawing, but when it comes to human anatomy *cough* and drawing people in general *cough*, I definitely struggle as it is a weakness of mine. You can see this a lot when you go on my DA page at ShadowHellHoundz.

No one should ever use Michelangelo's drawing/ sculptures of women as an example of anatomical accuracy when talking about a typically feminine figure. He basically took a very muscular man, added hips and slapped badly shaped oranges onto the pecs.
@pondersprocket2274
@pondersprocket2274 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I actually have a book on anatomy that takes some famous paintings and breaks down what the problems with them were and why those problems existed. Most artists have limitations in their work, either because of their own skills or because of what was around them at the time. To treat an artist's work as an absolute as a studying tool is just naive because it effectively prevents new artists from recognizing and overcoming those issues.

A little bit of critique here, I would be nice if you would either provide a link to the image, as well as a disclaimer telling people that the link is just to see the image, not to harass the artist so that we can look at it without text covering up parts of the image or you could simply have a part of the video without text that simply shows us the image with none of it being covered.

I actively chose not to do that because I didn't want people to go to the artist and bring up this old critique. I didn't think that would be fair to them. This is also why I blacked out the artist's name. However, in future videos, I'll be sure to showcase the piece as a whole before inserting the critique.

Yeah, I definitely see your point there and thank you in advance for the future videos, I love watching your content.
