Loved this episode. Especially the ride to Xico. Such beautiful country and so picturesque. Probably over-romanticizing but it seemed like the people living there had to be wonderful simply because of their surroundings. Probably actually very difficult small farm living. And the Cantona and other ruins - absolutely stunning. So, wow, yes a great episode. I thought about coca leaves also. And it might have helped. But the native people that live(d) in and worked at those altitudes were/are like a different sub-species in terms of the capability of dealing with that altitude. The coca leaves were the icing on a cake of incredible physical conditioning and adaptation. And I know how Matt was feeling. Or my version of it. I hiked to around 11K feet in the Rockies one time and on the way in got an incredible, the worst ever, pulsating headache. The only relief was when I laid lay on my back. If I raised my head an inch it would hammer me right back down to the ground. But supine I was fine. Slept that night and the next day no problems. You mentioned that when you were in a campground the police told you it was dangerous(?). What was the danger? Am going to watch this again. Over dinner. At about 600 feet in elevation.

I'm glad to hear from you. I'm very interested to try Coca leaves someday and find it interesting how much it has come up amongst the viewers of this episode. Maybe it's a little because I have been reading One River by Wade Davis and he talked a lot about the Coca plant and leaves. We were not in a campground but in an empty lot next to a campground. The campground would not allow dogs. The lot was owned by a family restaurant/bar/store thing and I think the police left us alone because I had asked the owner if it would be alright for us to camp there and he had already said it would be fine. I don't know what the dangers would have been. That was just a previous overlanders experience written in ioverlander the app that we use often to find spots to camp.

Altitude sickness is no joke so I'm glad you got down safely! Hopefully Jaeger is now sporting the latest in Swiss Mountain Doggo barrels, fully stocked with O2 and cerveza. They're not only more stylish than his cone, but they also pack the additional life saving qualities unique to O2 and cerveza.

Your comments are always such a treat! I get excited to read them. Always a good laugh. Jaeger really does need to start pulling his weight in dog food.

We got stationed at the AF Academy in Colorado awhile back and I had a headache for 3 weeks before I became acclimated to the 7000 ft elevation (then hiking there wasnt so tough either). So I know what you must be going through not to mention the uphill hike. A couple years ago we set out on a hike here in Alaska. It was listed as a moderate hike. I thought since I was recuperating from a bout with cancer and had not been as active for the past 2 yrs, I should stick to the easier hikes. However this one was straight up the mountain and the 4 miles we did go about killed me. At least you tried that is what counts. Thanks for taking us along.

Great video. It has been a dream of mine to do this trip you guys are on, and wow, the ruins! We are currently in the southwest escaping wet Oregon for the winter but have been watching your trip from the beginning. As we consider embarking on this journey soon we would love to hear more about how it all went, how long it took, what you could warn us to stay clear of and what your budget was for the trip. Thanks again for all the awesome content!

Hi Melanie. Glad you've enjoyed the videos. We had a great trip. We spent 13 months going to Panama and about 3 months to get back to California. It's kind of hard to recommend or warn you against anything since everyone travels for different reasons, but I would recommend keeping an open mind and not getting too hung up on a destination. If you set out to go to Panama, but only make it to Nicaragua because you were having fun and spent more time in Guatemala than expected, that's OK. Our budget was $50usd per day. That money was supposed to cove everything for 2 people and a dog(food, lodging, gas, car parts, activities...) We finished our first year on budget, but went over budget on our way home. In general, the slower you travel the less you spend per a day since you aren't buying fuel, your car isn't breaking down, and you have time at camp to cook for yourself. Thanks for the questions. We plan to make a video series answering the questions we receive from viewers once we slow our travels and get some time;)

Oh, yeah that place was so nice! We had done 12 hours of driving through Mexico to cross into the states, a night at a Walmart, and two nice but dry and dusty days at some BLM area near Patagonia and I was dreaming of a lake. That place made my dreams come true.

Might not be a bad idea to carry little hiker oxygen bottles. Heading into high altitude without acclamation is no joke. Doesn't matter if you are in shape or not. Also, I'm betting with a little asking around the town you could have gotten a baggie of coca leaves to chew on while you make your ascent. Would have dramatically improved your chances at summiting. (But that might be more of a South American thing... but it's worth looking into nonetheless)
@TheTravelingTogetherJournal7 жыл бұрын
I like it! Good tips. We don't overly plan our adventures (we should work on this), but we did learn a lot about altitude and the power of it. Very humbaling. Life at sea level did not prepare us well.
@yosemiteflyer6 жыл бұрын
You can get the coca leaves at the markets too or supra's. You will need it as you go south through the mountains. Stick it in you cheek and slowly chew on them. They don't taste bad. You will see the whole families use them. Should be nice and green I believe. They was in Salta Argentina anyhow. Greg

Never drink well water. False economy guys. Get your R.O water in town. This could end an otherwise lovely trip or Worse.

Hi Guy. Thanks for the concern. Why is town water better than well water?
@guyscratton67497 жыл бұрын
The Traveling Together Journal Amy, for the equivalent of 50 cents or less you can refill the 25+ Ltr. Bottles with Reverse Osmosis Water...100% safe. If not, you and Matt are seriously at risk of getting really sick ( at best), thus ending your amazing journey. Water Born illnesses are one of the NUMERO UNO causes of sickness and yes even death in countries that are still in development stages. Trust me I've been on the same trip that you and Matt are on now. DO NOT even brush your teeth with unboiled water ( min.10 min.). Aloha,Dr.Guy.

Our blue jerry can that you may have seen us using is a Lifesaver product. It has the same filter technology as their backpacking water filters. Supposedly you can take water from rivers, ponds, wells, pretty much anywhere except the ocean and it makes it safe to drink. We use this jerry can to filter all of our water for drinking, cooking, doing the dishes, or brushing our teeth. It has worked well so far. We've met a lot of people that do the filtered water refill stations that you mention for all of their drinking water and it seems like a good option too, we just like having the ability to getting our water from other sources since not every little Puebla has a good filtered water source. If your interested about the filter jerry can:kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5DSdZtsbbqqg9U

The Traveling Together Journal Amy, the reason that the well water tastes salty,is because it is brackish. Not only do the Wells ( close to the sea) get most of twater from the ocean, it can cross contaminate with the soak- a - -way septic tank type toilets in the vicinity Try measuring the E.C. ( DTS) of the well water in question. I think that you might find that's it's NOT of potable quality. What do the locals drink? Aloha,G.

Guy Scratton I like the filter systems; but have to pay attention to how many gallos the manufacturer says each filter works for before needing replacement...
