Hash browns are fairly new, here. They replaced Bubble and Squeak! Cafes and housewives would keep left over potato and cabbage, mash it up and fry it until it was crispy. Im 17 year old brit and living in the UK with my parents and my family currently has a national trust membership. Sometimes we don’t have a membership but if we do we either get English heritage one year then national trust the next and try to visit as many places as possible whenever we go to a new area of the country. Meanwhile my grandparents are probably signed up to both and only go to like one property of each of them. Also some English heritage (and National Trust) sites are free because it’s right next to a public footpath or it just wouldn’t be appropriate to charge for them, for example ruins, statues, monuments and those carvings in the hills.

The queue is the best and oldest example of equality that we have. Some people mock it, but then they are the ones that fail to understand the principles behind it. Very funny as usual Alanna, just need to work on saying Zed instead of Zee now 😁. Did you know there are now some live camera's around Loch Ness, so you can Nessie watch from home ? As you're a Yorkshire pud fan, and as a Yorkshire guy, I have to promote the home grown stuff. You seriously need to try what they now call a Yorkshire Burrito, I've had these from way back as a kid. A big Yorkshire pud, filled with roast dinner ingredients, folded and wrapped in a serviette or foil. It's eaten like you would a Donner Kebab or wrap, make some from the spare Sunday roast to warm up for later. I guess you could fill them with almost anything, but you can't beat the original.
@harrybarrow62222 жыл бұрын
Queues: I think this is closely related to the British sense of fair play and decency. If you wait in the queue, you eventually reach the front; everyone waits about the same length of time. But if someone tries to barge in front, it sets back everyone behind them.

Northumberland is much ignored in terms of scenic landscapes. In fact, its the least populated county in England, and... it has the most castles. The coastine is also STUNNING. Bamburgh, Dunstonburgh, Walkworth, Holy Island, etc. I sorta loved that its kinda ignored though. It means that on Bank Holiday weekends, when the hordes travel south, we get to enjoy our landscapes sans too many tourists. I feel for the Cornish people, who must dread holiday season.

Traditionally the full English included sliced fried potatoes but hash browns are fine. Personally I would also list black pudding as essential too. I once had bubble and squeak with a breakfast and that was truly great but it can vary greatly depending on the chef.

I have discovered that Black Pudding gets better the further North you travel. I think it's due to the fact that the fat content reduces as you travel North. When my in laws come down from Scotland it's something we also for when they ask what we want them to bring.

Bubble and squeak is made of leftovers from the day before so very suited to home cooked but not really production line restaurant food. Unless of course they make it from the plate scrapings of the customers leftovers from the previous day. Kind of like a perpetual sourdough starter. 🤣

Hi Alana, on the cider kick again heh? I think I’ve told you this before but in the 80s my post was Weston-Super-Mare just after 5he Bristol bridge on the M5 well about 20 miles further on I found the Thatchers Cider Farm. It used to be a real old style cider farm with mostly wooden barrels and an old barn style building on the side of the farm yard. You park and enter the barn, just inside there used to be a big ceramic sink to the side and in front of you there is long wooden table style bar. Behind the bar were three large Tuns (very large bullet shaped barrels) one with sweet tasting cider, the next with medium cider and the third with dry cider. On the sink we’re half pint glasses empty. You helped yourself to a glass walked to the bar and you could then aske for a mix of which of the three you wanted to mix. When you had the mix that you liked that week you then asked for that mix in a five litre plastic container. The colour of the cider is slightly green because what you are getting was raw alcoholic Scrumpy. It was great, I don’t know whether they still do this but it’s one of the memories I have of that time. I say Raw if you had more than a pint it made your pee smell! Honestly it was brilliant. Cheers Aah kid! And I’m saying nothing about the Zed!!!

As you're doing a to zed of British things (rather than just English things), allow me to add, on behalf of any Welsh folk watching: ch: chwedlau or folk stories/tales; dd: y Ddraig Goch/the Welsh flag; ff: Ffestiniog railway; ll: Llangollen International Eisteddfod; rh: Rhondda Male Voice Choir. I mention these, as the Welsh alphabet contains the letters ch, dd, ff, ng, ll, ph, and th too. (But has no j,k,q,v,x,or z). BTW, I agree that Canuks have a great, UK-style sense of humour. They need it, having the next-door neighbour they have. So: Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Howie Mandel, Michael J Fox, etc, etc.

What a fun premise for a video! As to "green"; one of my visits there during a particularly dry part of summer, I was surprised to see brown grass in parks and churchyards because I'm so used to seeing England as so green. Then I realized that unlike the US, there are far fewer sprinkler systems and in a few days, it would just rain and regreen everything! More of a mental note on the wasteful excess (and lack of California rain) in the US mindset IMO ☺️ Confession: in 7 years of annual visits, I've never been to a pub.

Talking of the Queue, a social Anthropologist, Kate Fox, wrote a book called "Watching The English" and devoted a completed chapter "The Queue of One" in which she observed that the habit is inbred to the extent that one person waiting at a bus stop will not hang around in the general vicinity of the bus stop but will queue right next to the sign. She also devoted a chapter to "The Weather as Family". If you can get hold of a copy it is very insightful but also amusing.

I would consider dairy milk chocolate a kids chocolate as its mainly just sugar and fat and approx 25% cocoa mass (the chocolate bit). It's made by Cadbury who also make Bournville dark, like an adult version (mainly because it's not as sweet, due to higher chocolate content) There are alot of great Belgium and Swiss chocolate that has 75-90% cocoa mass and is lovely. Ie Green and Blacks or Lindt plus some others. Can you tell i like chocolate?

A to Zee....i.e. Zed.....as in Zebra Crossing..........love you lots. though....😁 I lived on bottles of Merrydown Cider back in the 60's... I always thought that Cadbury's milk chocolate ws best, until it was bought out by the Yanks who don't seem to know how to make tasty chocolate as I believe they changed the ingredients, and a bit more greasy as well. But that's just me.. Summer time a lot of the land covered in nice green grass, but this year we had a great 'heat wave' which turned some of the land brown, and people complainer about their gardens a bit brown etc., I liked it, because I didn't have to keep mowing the grass all the time in the hot weather.. Look out the windows now, and out and about, what do you see, lots of green grass growing like mad, with maybe a few small brown spots, which will probably go away early next year.. :Panic over!.....😀 'Innuendo'.......I watch a World of Tanks game, a Canadian presenter, and he is 'full of it' when commenting on players on their replays, and funny to watch.. Jelly Snakes, sound interesting so will investigate. Korma, sorry, I prefer Chinese king prawn curry and egg fried rice. Had Indian once, but what I had seemed rather watery for me, but many years ago in London when I worked there. But back in the late 50's as a nipper, my next door neighbour had worked in India for some years and learnt to make his own curries, and very much enjoyed them back then.....😀 As I live on the Isle of Wight, as a nipper I lived right on the sea front in a row of old houses (which used to be coal warehouses, before the houses were built0of 3 stories, top floor servants quarters, the middle flor was the owners with 5 bedrooms, bathroom and toilet, and the bottom floor was the kitchen (complete with a back stair way across the landing up to the top floor) for the servants to use, and back room, (complete with a glass case with the bells with numbers, so when rung (push buttons in the rooms the servants would know where to go), above the door, and the dining room one side of the passage, and the lounge on the other side either side of the front door. Anyway, I just had to walk out the front across the gravel 'road' over the sea wall and down onto the beach for playing or swimming.....very happy days....😀 Have you tried the large Yourshire's that you can fill with whatever you want....very tasty? I can buy a small folded umbrella with carry bag for about a quid, and small but ideal for those rainy days, rather than a full sized one.. I think that there are so many lovely and beautiful landscapes in the UK, as in England, Scotland, N. Ireland and Wales OK, I will just shut up now, and quietly close the door behind me...

As a Scot the whole "no hash browns in a Full English" thing makes me laugh. A "Fill Scots" has fried slice AND a potato scone. Heart attack on a plate but what a way to go! But you're a better man than me if you can tackle and beat an Ulster Fry. That'd feed me for a week...

Great video idea Alanna, this is your personal choice, but proving again how British you have become, curry! Maybe an A to Zed of historical British places, not forgetting the statues and plaques, and including Peter Pan.

Hey what a great video! It must have been tricky choosing only one for each letter, but lots of great picks here. Oh, and absolutely, hash browns have a place on a Full English.
