When I was a soldier Walkers would create a new flavour and before they put them out for general release they would try them out in the NAAFFI to see how well they went.

'Hedgehog Flavoured Crisps' were marketed in this country in 1981, but withdrawn not long afterwards, as they contravened the Trades Description act, as they did not actually contain any actual hedgehogs! They were reintroduced as 'Hedgehog Flavour Crisps', with artificial hedgehog flavouring, and sold until about 1991 - even in Canada!!

I remember hedgehog crisps too. I don't recall they had a great taste but i frequently brought them anyway just because they were unusual. Other crisps I miss are the Phillias Fogg and Branigans brands. I loved Brannigans Pork pie and Branstone pickle flavour. There was another brand of crisps in the 90s which came with a tub of dipping sauce inside the packet. One flavour had garlic sauce and another had prawn cocktail.

Its a common misconception outside of the uk, prawn cocktail crisps are really Marie Rose sauce flavoured, not prawn flavoured. So tomato ketchup, Mayo, paprika, lemon… or a poor man’s version, ketchup and salad cream.

Happy New Year Alanna, and I'm glad to see that you're plumbing the depths of the UK crisps and savouries market. Leaving aside the delicious Walkers Lime poppadoms, the rest are truly 'interesting'. Twiglets have always been weird yet they sell in truckloads - yes, they are like marmite initially but the aftertaste is totally different and I've always sort of hated them but manage to eat a handful before I'm reminded how awful they are! Skips on the other hand were quite revolutionary when they first hit the shops and I clearly remember competitions at school to see how long you could keep one on your tongue without it melting (and of course being delightful kids the way you proved it was to poke your tongue out and show the congealed mess that was still there for all to see!). Happy days!!

Last year Seabrooks made an idiot-goading extra spicy crisp. Limited edition etc. As someone who was weened on hot curries in the city these crisps are made I fancied my chances. I can usually manage most hot dishes, and any spicy snack, (as hot as you like,) but I had to retire defeated half way through a 180g bag of Walkers Doritos - Flamin' Hot Tangy Cheese; I could feasibly have struggled through and ate the full bag, but after putting them aside for a while, the thought of going back to finish them seemed more like a trial than a treat, so even though I'm a tight Yorkshireman who doesn't like to waste anything I've paid good money for, they went straight into the bin!

Great video again, Alanna. In my experience, and it's happened many times, when coming across something I'm not sure if I love or hate, I inevitably end up hating it after eating, say, a whole bag. On the other hand, there has been cases where something i remember hating in my earlier life, takes on a 'new' and more palatable flavour years later. Perhaps my rapidly aging self has selectively killed off those 'ewww' taste buds to, say, Twiglets benefit.

Oh my, you've missed so many greats! You included a few, but from your reaction you are not going like, that said I'm going to spew a list! (Also twiglets are amazing, but each to their own!) Frazzles, space invaders(pickled onion) Doritos chilli heatwave(might be American but awesome and everywhere in England) McCoy's cheese and onion, McCoy's salt and vinegar, anything by walkers (lays) but especially ready salted, chopsticks.. honestly I could go on for days, you miss represented here, as much as I love you videos, and twiglets are also great, but love them hate them as per marmite is totally understandable x

Alana, watching your facial expressions was a kick--almost as fun as watching a baby trying a lemon for the first time. Nothing worse than being disappointed by a bag o' crisps. I kept hoping you had a palate-cleanser between them all. PS--I'm a USA native and my parents said "more-ish." I remember Dad saying that Mom's chocolate chip cookies had a more-ish taste as he took another, and then another. Dad's side was mostly of German immigrants; Mom's was Scots-Irish and English. I hear the word used occasionally but not widely.

I think the multipacks are more common because the attempt to stop child obesity... like all brands had to stop selling king size chocolate bars but got around it by selling them as a duo bars instead to make them more for sharing with a friend instead of having a whole pack to yourself🤓

Prawn cocktail is more accurately called Seafood Sauce, it's the sauce served in a prawn cocktail starter. Wheat Crunch are the supposed "healthy" option crisp which is why they taste like arse. Best way to describe Twiglets is straight yeast extract flavour pretzels.

Chips are thick cut potatoes, fries are thin cut. Also (other than in a chip shop for some weird reason) chips are traditionally oven baked, and fries are fried…. Obviously 😂

Tip - If the crisp/snack etc is described as prawn cocktail flavour, then it won't have any prawn, it will have only the chemically manufactured taste of prawn. If it is described as flavoured (note the ed ending) then it will contain prawn. So the cheese taste in the cheese & pale ale has no cheese; it's a flavour. Whereas the twiglets are yeast extract flavoured. Flavour versus flavoured.
