Bringing Walt back to life is the only way Tomorrowland will ever get fixed

DCA has a huge amount of TLC with Buena Vista Street, Cars Land, Pixar Pier. Then it was Disneyland's turn with Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. Then it was DCA's turn with Avengers Campus. Then it was Disneyland's turn again withToontown and New Orleans Square. Next it will be DCA's turn again with Coco, more Avengers Campus, and Avatar (although this might be a long ways off, especially if it goes in the Simba parking lot). After that, it will be Disneyland's turn again, and I am confident that that's when Tomorrowland will be done -- perhaps with at least partial opening in time for the 75th anniversary.

Walt Disney is SO much bigger than someone’s grandfather. He’s an icon, a legend, an innovator, and the sole reason why Disneyland exists. His family should embrace the fact that the massive company he created - which is more about selling Mickey ears and popcorn buckets tied to an IP nowadays, rather than just creating a family-fun experience - is creating an attraction that is 100% a tribute to Walt. I understand how it might be creepy to them and also how Walt never wanted this - of course he didn’t want it! He was humble and never ever made it about himself. But… this is 70 years after the park opened and 60 years after he died. This is an amazing tribute and I give the company massive credit. I can’t wait.

That's what it should be! It should be a bit of Buck Rogers, some Lost in Space, Adam Strange, and then have Epcot be a bit more of a late 70's/early 80's type of optimistic and quasi utopian and solarpunk vision of life on Earth.

I said the same thing in Bricky’s other video. The best move for Tommorland is to turn the clock back to 1967 that was fully Walt’s vision of the future, mainly for Epcot.😊

As a kid growing up in the late 80s early 90s I was fascinated by the man. I loved watching his films on the introduction of things to come. Knowing the films were old I still had this feeling of being right there in the room with him and it was magical. That’s what I love about the parks and the man who brought it all together. Meeting him was something I’ve always dreamed of and I believe this is the closest thing to living that dream. I always felt he should be honored in some way shape or form. This is a great episode, Brickey! From what I read based on an interview with Diane Disney Miller in the “E” Ticket Magazine (Fall 2004) is that she wanted Walt to be humanized. I don’t think Walt signed over the rights of his likeliness (maybe he did?). However, does this mean will we see more of Walt’s face in the Disney products? The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco has Walt’s face in the logos on their products. It’s a complexed thing. Regardless, I’m excited for it! Thank you for looking at this, Brickey! Diane Disney Miller was against doing an AA of her father, and she fought against this idea for years. Diane's daughter, Joanna, has already posted her reaction to the D23 announcement. (On FB) : 'Stop the madness...don't let them turn Grampa into a robot!" An obvious concern is using Walt's image for PR purposes, implying Walt's approval. It must be noted that when D'Amaro announced this at D23, he said they had the Disney family with them every step of the way. That's not true. They got a great-nephew from Roy's side of the family to go along with it. They did not have an OK from Walt's side of the family. They already knew they would never get that. Bottom line: backstabbing Walt's family is not a good look for Iger and Company.

Were Eisenhower or Harry Truman's families consulted? Their widows and children were around when the Hall of Presidents opened. What's the ethical difference if someone was an elected official or not? Could a president even opt out of the Hall of Presidents if they wanted to? So long as they do it right and don't put words in his mouth that would be out of character (I remember Stan lee being used like a puppet in his last years) I don't see a contradiction. Walt frankly admitted his "Uncle Walt" TV persona was a character, an outgoing host who didn't drink or smoke and aways dressed neatly. In reality, Walt drank, smoked, and had issues with shyness. There are pictures of him from the production of Mary Poppins where he looks downright ragged, gray hairs straight up, worn out sweater... they're absolutely not going to have Walt look like that. Walt is actually on record as being opposed to any statues or animatronics of himself in the park(s). His humble point of view was that he did not rate the honor afforded someone like Lincoln. Obviously, the statue issue has been settled, but Dianne Disney Miller, and now her daughter Joanne, were/are adamantly apposed to an animatronic of Walt because it goes directly against his stated wishes. The real question here is, "has enough time passed?" For many members of the Disney family, that answer is no.

This was a well-done presentation, Brickey. When I read the title about bringing Walt back to life, I was puzzled--Walt was cremated. "He did it to Lincoln!" And the current Lincoln audio-animatronic is much improved from the 1964 edition that debuted at the New York World's Fair. The Carousel of Progress show building is currently underused--unless it's being treated as an expanded Club 33. Rumor has it that someone suggested closing Disneyland to the public and refurbishing it as an exclusive club for the wealthy, remaking the entire resort into a Club 33--and that might still happen even though the business model will bankrupt the Disney Company. The Carousel of Progress might be a good spot to run a Walt Disney show if it can be refurbished--Walt as a boy and then in the Red Cross, Walt in California as a movie mogul, Walt establishing Disneyland. Perhaps Walt as an angel looking over his playground with pride...it would be a higher capacity attraction than the Disney Family Museum in San Francisco and a possible replacement for the Walt Disney World Carousel of Progress. I watched the Disneyland television shows as they evolved. The news that Walt Disney had died was sad--my senior brother had the same birthday and weekly Disney shows made Uncle Walt a part of the family. Bring Walt back? "He did it to Lincoln."

And Bricky gave very good reasons for this (as did Tom Corless of WDWNT) in that for many visitors to Disneyland they don’t really know who Walt was at all, or even understand that “Disney” in the name “Disneyland” was the name of an actual person. Also, Walt has been gone for 58 of Disneyland’s 69 years, and was part of the company for 43 of its 101 years. ..So I think it’s time for this!

Wow this is a sensitive topic. Personally, I’m looking forward to this. I agree that we don’t want to loose Walt’s vision if we loose it,then we are just another theme park. On the other hand, if this was my grandpa or dad I would never want to see them as an animatronic it would be too difficult. However, if you’re a public figure your life is very different than most people and you have to expect things out of the norm. I wonder if this animatronic would be difficult for anyone to see that has known Walt well. Maybe a imagineer who worked with Walt could comment. I would like to know. Thank you Brickey for yet another excellent video. 😊

You made a great point... why not Walt, if President Lincoln was ok? To me, this would be more than just a vibes ride. It would be an educational slice of history. A look at life from Walt's point of view. I don't know if they still play the videos of Walt in the lobby of the Opera House, where he's talking from his office, but THAT is exactly the vibe that I expect this new attraction to create. I'm hoping they approve it. We need more retro, heart-warming, Disney magic.

Disneyland needs more Walt. Period. It is HIS park - the park he risked just about everything to build. Brickey- I was thinking the same thing while watching your last video on Tomorrowland and how it was ignored at D23...again. With the Cars Land announced for Florida's Magic Kingdom, it seems that Disney is looking to differentiate the parks and create different experiences across the globe. However, Disneyland is where Walt started it all, and it makes sense to me to maintain Disneyland as Walt's park, with all the "classic" attractions that Walt had his hand on, or greatly influenced before his passing. A "classic" Tomorrowland, from Walt's imagination, would not only be nostalgic (for us older folk), but could also put a modern twist on some of Walt's ideas for the future he imagined.

One aspect of this we need and will never know is who got the idea of constructing a Walt Disney Animomotronic, was it WDI or Disney Company leadership? Second, did they consult Walt’s granddaughter at the onset or did she see it once they got an “alpha” version of the animatronic or was she not consulted at all? Those things need to be known to differentiate her response as steadfast to how she and her mother have always been or did the Company do this without her input?

I loved looking at the details on the board! Great video. Glad you brought up the moral question to be discussed! It seems like the family member that is all upset about "GRANDPA ROBOT😨!!!!!" does not represent the entire family's sentiments about it and clearly isn't thinking of this from a business perspective. According to the family member - if people want to learn about Walt and the parks they can watch old black and white videos of him and there's no reason to turn grandpa into a Robot. I find this argument so out of touch with the reality that the majority of people won't watch old videos. The Animatronic is going to help so many people learn about Walt and get excited about it! (Also I agree that Tomorrowland and Grandpa Walt Robot would be perfect together)

Can I place an order for a video? I'd personally love to know how Sharon, Diane and their kids didn't end up owning or being in charge of the company, and how those surviving today have no control over anything the company does. They didn't get locked out of anything, They simply sold their stock, over the years, and invested it in more lucrative things. Ron Miller, Walt's son-in-law was CEO by the early 80's but was forced out in 1984. Disney was languishing at that time a needed some fresh management.

I'm looking forward to a great new animatronic- regardless of what the image is! I do remember Walt from his TV show, and I remember reading him describe that version of "Walt" as a character he created, so I'm not feeling any negatives here. Then again, I'm pretty mellow, and whenever "drama" happens in the Disney fan community, I'm pretty unfazed by it. :)

I am all for the Walt animatronic. I would love seeing a respectful enactment of a presentation he might make, and I think it is a good thing to remind younger Disneyland guests that Walt was a real person. I know his family is against it, but Walt is a public figure who already appears or is portrayed in films, videos, statues, and other media.

in my opinion, walt should be in his park.....and be a reminder to the eisners and chapeks that have come after him, what disney stands for....he would not have a problem with his likeness being used....he licensed his name and likeness to fund disneyland construction...he literally invented "audio-animatronics"...with the tiki room(thats "walt disneys tiki room") mr lincoln, pirates, and every audio animatronic that came since. but mainly,as a reminder who walt disney really was,and what his dream was to him...and NOBODY should forget this great man. just make it respectful, and the best it can be. like the gold finials on the top of the castle, that roy said no,and walt did it anyway.....spare no expense to "plus" it.

How I will receive this is all in the execution. Not so much the animatronic, but of the story they're telling. My hope is that everything Walt says in this attraction is his actual words, preferably from a recording (although I'd settle for an AI rendition to improve the audio quality as long as the words are his verbatim). I suspect the talk about the "future" will be of the future as he saw it in the setting we're watching - call it the early 1960s. So future plans for the park, maybe future plans for a swamp in Florida. If they can stick to that, I'll be a very happy camper. If they don't, I'll join the Disney family chorus in denouncing it.

More so, I'd love ❤to see Walt interact w/his characters, like Mickey & Donald, whether its done thru animatronics or animated (2D or 3D) maybe thru Pepper's Ghost.

Like 6 years ago there were those Garner Holt expressive heads, they did a Lincoln one and a Victorian era “Dickens” looking guy. Those were pretty amazing, and I’m sure technology has only gotten better. So I think it is possible to make something that won’t enter the uncanny valley, especially if it is viewed from afar up on stage. Although seems easy to just defrost the poor guy 😏

I'm excited they are bringing Walt into the park in this way, just a walk across Town Square from his apartment. I'm right there with you, Brickey, about the emotional part (need to share a box of Kleenex?). People have to remember that audio-animatronic technology for Disney has come a long way since the giant squid in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the World's Fair rendition of Abraham Lincoln. I've read that Walt was a perfectionist and all about the details. I'm sure those assigned to this project are well aware of that. I hope they are able to give us a visit with Walt that we can all feel good about and have nothing but positive things to say about it.
