That was my felling before Disneyland Forward was approved. Iger said Avatar was happening regardless. If Disneyland Forward wasn't approved by the city, then I assume there would have been a low budge retheme of Sorin and Grizzly River Run into Avatar. The natural theming of those areas makes the transition pretty easy. (Note: I think this was a bad idea, but it just seemed like the type of decision the company would have made at the time.)

I’m a strong believer that Avatar will go into the Simba lot. Plenty of space, no demolition to existing attractions, and very little disruption during construction. The show buildings could be placed along the western perimeter to act as a noise buffer for the residential properties. Framing the rock arch to the west or south could offer great sunsets and beautiful vistas.

Grizzly River Rapids actually has a partial IP used. They use the voice of the park ranger from the Humphrey the Bear cartoons. They should add Humphrey and the park ranger animatronics to the ride. Humphrey was always getting into trouble he could easily fit into the attraction. They could do updated cartoons for Disney+. Bam the ride now has a fitting IP and an added story line.

Thank you Brickey, great job surveying fans and going through the options! Disney could probably fit both a Monstropolis with door coaster (plus existing Monsters Inc. ride) *and* a Mexican village with Coco boat ride in the Hollywood Land / Hollywood Backlot areas, if some of the bus area and Hyperion were used. This would be the easiest build project (start right away) and while Monsters Inc. ride is closed it could be referbed with modern effects, maybe a new fun vehicle system. Then if Avatar does go in Simba it needs about 12 acres -- or half the Simba lot, allowing for one more land expansion over there such as a Villains Land, Lion King, Neverland, or Zootopia. Most importantly -- because I cannot stand the Pixar Place Hotel being seen from DCA -- if Avatar is over there I'd want this to be turned into a Pandora hotel. Though that building is ugly, if it was rethemed as a scientist outpost, with rock work floating around, lush landscaping, and one of those helicopters on the roof, at least when you see it from the park it's a thematic element (like seeing Matterhorn or Mission Breakout) and not a dated 1980s hotel.

25% of the Simba lot for Avatar, but with 2 rides.... Then 15% Moana, 20% Atlantis and the water coaster, 10% Finding Nemo, 20% 20000 Leagues Submarine ride (so Disneyland can finally remove the submarine lagoon and Autopia), and other water related ips... So basically a mini version of Tokyo Disneysea, using all the water ips...

If we were to build in Simba, I feel that we would be dedicating 50% of the lot. The big issue is still the noise factor. Even with indoor rides, the waterfalls might be a bit too much, and we’d have to aim the waterside back towards Pixar Pier. It’s not like we have the freedom of the northern lot near the hotels in Simba. We have residential west of Simba, and that makes things complicated.

What was not mentioned here is what parcel would be the easiest for the construction logistics. And the easy an answer is the Simba lot for sure, despite needing to bridge the gap over Disneyland Drive. Remember, that has already been done with Downtown Disney some 24 years ago. And the infrastructure would be far easier as well starting from scratch. As for the Grizzly Peak area -- Has anyone considered the massive headache of demolition of that area, the construction and trying to get heavy equipment, earth-graders, 100’s of debris-hauling trucks in the center of DCA for 24 months of more??? No way that would happen. And even the Hollywood Backlot area would cause the similar issues along with massive traffic and delays on Harbor Blvd. for the same reasons. So from a logistical and speed standpoint the best location is the Simba lot.

0:51 I highly doubt Disney would replace a land at DCA that a) seamlessly connects to the wonderful Grand Californian Hotel and b) is beautifully themed and the one good land at DCA to begin with. Not to mention not enough room and housing the original Soarin’ that is very beloved and added to Florida, Shanghai, and Tokyo. According to a MiceChat update, AVATAR will now likely be in the Simba lot and Coco may be moved to Hollywood land, due to concerns about bottlenecking in Pixar Pier. Hopefully Hollywoodland (or part of it) would get some sort of a Santa Cecilia re-theme around it.

I've mentioned before that I thought the Hollywood back lot would be a great place for Coco. It's not exactly Mexico, but Los Angeles (and most of California) has strong ties to Mexico. Coco and the Mexican cultural themes would fit in very nicely. It's becomes another neighborhood in Los Angeles, which mimics what exists in real life.
@maxickingdom

@@wheelindisney5874 it could work- they could knock down some buildings and build a Coco ride there with a Hollywood Spanish-style facade. That could be the thematic connection, like Little Mermaid being a Victorian Bathhouse (? Odd choice). Although better if they could take down Monsters Inc and Philharmagic and use the current backlot buildings from Philharmagic to Monsters Inc to house the ride. The backlot can then be re-themed to Santa Cecilia. They’ll have to reroute the monorail though, which is pretty doable.

Brickey, think Disney would ever consider putting a show building over an electrofied autopia and re-route the monorail track to open nearly 200k sqft of land in DL? I think it could be a perfect spot for a Frozen land, the old motorboat lake can be the docks, Matterhorn in the Distance can be the north Mountain. I don't the the monorail has a meaningful reason to loop around autopia besides giving some views. With autopia going electric it can be updated to be in doors with both practical and digital decor.

First, let me congratulate you on another well put together video. I always enjoy letting my imagination fly along with you. As a Central Floridian, we face our own challenges to our beloved Walt Disney World. Resort. I find it interesting that you are on board with saving the beautiful Grizzly Peak that has no IP and sells little merchandise, yet can make a case for trashing our Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island which finds itself in the same predicament. My real question is, “What age is Disneyland catering to? There seems to be fewer attractions for children and more for preteens to young adults. I thought your video making a case for Tokyo’s Disney Springs/Frozen Kingdom in the Simba parking lot was the perfect idea of melding IP and place making, adding attractions for the younger crowd and their parents(and lots of opportunities to sell merchandise). Just saying.

This is what I think they should do: 1. Rename DCA to "Franchiseland" (mostly joking... mostly...). 2. Just build a third park. Idc where, maybe even the Toy Story parking lot and make the monorail go there, just build it somewhere so it's not a fight to add more lands to the park and ruin the flow (example, I don't think Galaxy's edge should've been built at Disneyland). 3. If Disney that hell-bent on bringing Avatar to DCA, then (and I hate to say this) Hollywoodland would look the best. Even though I don't want it in DCA (I voted for it to go in another park), I think it would actually be a beautiful match to the theming. Imagine, you're looking down Hollywood Blvd (if they don't remove it), to the left is the sci-fi greenery of Avatar and to the right is the sci-fi machinery of Guardians of the Galaxy. I think they would complement well in theme and vibe, especially since both are movies that will be considered "classics" of our time, a fitting tribute to Hollywood.

I do not care what goes in to the Hollywood backlot to replace it, I only care that something worth while fills up that massive amount of space. Monster Inc, a reskin of possibly the worst ride Disney ever created is hardly at the top of my nostalgia list. It can go tomorrow and I wouldn't notice. But I do think Avatar, Avengers and Cars land all lined up is a pretty formidable way to anchor the entire East side of DCA. Then with Coca going in the West side, all that's left is to fix Paradise Gardens and DCA is 100% top shelf, and that's before even expanding across the street.

If I were Disney and were looking to the future and want to make sure to leave room for expansion I wouldn't want to use a big portion of the Simba lot since that would mean Disney is very limited in space to build something new down the line without replacing beloved rides. as much as I love the Grizzly peak area I never ride that ride and hardly anyone is around so Avatar land would definitely bring foot traffic to that part of the park.

Grizzly Peak & Redwood Creek Trail were one of the few things that stood out to me when DCA opened in 2001. The only change to that area is audioanimatronics should be added to the River Run attraction. That was noticeably missing over 20 years ago, even more so today. The one complaint I can't understand is that an Avatar land would hurt the park's theme. "California" is something I associate with a Six-Flags-type park, so it should be thrown out. Even more so when Tokyo got a park themed the way DisneySea is.

I would respectfully disagree that DCA still invokes the spirit of California these days. They’ve been regularly changing parts of the park into things unrelated to California, and that’s fine, I think they’ve done it well. Most lands have turned into IP. Carthay Circle and Hollywood Blvd feels more in line with a “Main Street USA”. Backlot is a dead area, I can see that becoming a Monsters Inc land. The only land that truly feels like California still is Grizzly Peak, and because of that it feels sorta like the oddball out now. I wouldn’t be surprised if they changed that area to an IP at some point. Maybe not Avatar, but another IP. Not that I would necessarily like it, but If Grizzly Peak ended up as Avatarland, They could turn ‘Soarin’ into ‘Soarin’ around Pandora’. I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point they also change the name of the park to something like ‘Disney Adventure Park’. I don’t know if California really belongs in the name any more.

People are forgetting Pandora @ DAK has two rides, Disney has said nothing of multiple rides for DCA. In fact Josh D'Amaro referred to it again using the word "Experience" not "Land". I would like to see Disney do more multi IP lands, that way if you are not a fan of an IP there is something else you might enjoy. Disney's themepark niche has always been appealing to the masses not a small group.

A land this ambitious needs space, and even if it's a large percentage of current Simba (say 30-40%), its the only spot that makes any sense to me. Pandora works in AK because it was given the space to be genuinely immersive and isolated. If it doesn't get that in California, it'll forever be seen as shoehorned in instead of the surprise fan-favorite Pandora is in Florida.

Has anyone suggested putting Avatar land under the water, like a massive Dubai style engineering achievement? Dig down to bedrock, within the footprint of the water in the middle of the park. Build the Avatar land, with the giant rock features from the illustrations, on the bedrock. Then once the area is built, put an aquarium style roof over the entire land, with the peaks of the mountains poking out of the roof. Then put water, (1-2 feet) on top of the roof. Just enough to give the illusion that it's a lot of water. From Pixar Pier, the water would look almost the same as it does now, minus a few mountain peaks sticking out of the water. From under the water, you would be in the Avatar land, and could see UP to see the rides on the pier, and even Grizzly Peak. At night the world of color show would be visible from Avatar land, by looking up to the sky. I imagine access to Avatar land would be right next to the Bakery across from Wine Country Trattoria. The tunnel features from the illustrations suggest to me that, to access the land you need to go down/under something. That could be the San Fransokyo bridge and Pixar Pier. I'm not a fan of Avatar, but I think going 100% in on an immersive experience would be exciting. What I remember about Avatar is the depth Pandora had. Digging down may be the best way to achieve that feeling.

While I get why some people think that Avatar does not belong in California Adventure….. You have to consider the “California” theme started to get abandoned almost from the start. The whole premise of why Eisner wanted this concept (besides cost) was he thought “tourist” could get a taste of California without leaving the Disneyland Resort, and thus more more money staying with Disney. Lame for sure! Eisner did a lot for Disney but was sort of going off-the-rails at this point (basically his “Chapek” days), after losing so much investment on Euro Disney. I was at the media preview for DCA, as I was for the much more ambitious Westcot project (that’s another story…..). But being DCA was bad socially a ghost town for the first year they knew they needed a quick fix and the was Bug’s Land. So within 18 months the “California” thing was already being changed and it continued ever since. Even “DCA 2.0” with Iger - Buena Vista Street was more about Walt and him coming to California, not really about the state itself. That continued with Little Mermaid replacing the “Golden Dreams” theater, Cars Land, Pixar Pier, and eventually Avenger’s. So really, the California theme has been going through a slow death for years. I think once Avatar comes in that the name of park itself will change as well.

An Avatar-Land just doesn't have a 'Disney' vibe. It feels like they're trying to compete with Universals Jarassic Park. It may have made money at the BO, but i know of no actual fan base for this franchise. Most commets i see are people saying how overrated everyone is making it. I think it'll be Galaxies Edge 2.0. A huge failure. The only reason people will visit it is because it exists and there's more rides

Hey Brickey, I agree that Avatar does not belong in DCA. One idea I had was putting it in Tomorrowland by taking out the defunct Carousel of Progress building and the very lame and polluting Autopia. That must be enough space and it would abut the Submarine lagoon, which would help to set the Avatar back from other attractions.
