I was an IT worker before Y2K and it was NOT an “urban legend” it took hundreds of thousands of programmers extreme hours to make sure everything went smoothly. It is complete thanks to all the hard working people that you think it was a hoax. Disney was smart to plan early.
@StubbyPhillips
@StubbyPhillips 4 ай бұрын
Yep... I was there too! OF COURSE the media over-hyped it, _that's what they do,_ but calling Y2K "urban legend" implies that it wasn't a real problem. It was a real bug in a lot of software (most of it really). It was common to just use the last two digits for the date in software back then so after midnight 1999 those programs would have indicated the date as 1900. *It should be easy to see* how appearing to suddenly go backwards in time a hundred years might be problematic for some software. It was indeed fixed by a lot of work by a lot of people who continue to be disrespected by the _simpified_ "See! Nothing happened." narrative.

Besides being stupid about what the Y2k thing was, he also never really said what Disney actually did. "They were really concerned and spent a lot of money." Wow. So much detail.

Fun fact,the reason Y2K didn’t amount to much is that there was a LOT of people working behind the scenes to fix everything in time throughout the world, though that fix was really just pushing the issue down the line. I don’t know when but at some point, there’s going to be another Y2K, but I’m uncertain on the time frame

Awesome video. I'm loving the variety of topics recently. The Y2K bug was very successfully avoided by intense efforts across all of the lynchpin industries of society to re-engineer their software systems. Banking, health care, manufacturing, transportation, supply chain/distribution, education, agriculture, government, military, etc. It ended up being so thoroughly addressed (because it really wasn't that hard of a problem to fix), it seems like a nothing burger urban myth now, but if it was left unchecked, it would have not been great.

@@HeyBrickey I remember the business I was working at in 1999 found we couldn’t place any forward orders into 2000 as the computer just gave an error message that an order cannot be placed in the past. It did that because years were only 2 digits, so it read 00 as being before 99. It was only when the software was modified to use 4 digits for the year that we could use it again. It was a real pain.

There were also some Y2K issues in certain computer hardware systems too. Specifically, the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) of some older model PCs were unable to “clock over” to 2000 +, those units had to be identified and replaced with newer ones that did not have this problem. The replacement units had to have the appropriate applications software installed and configured to meet the end-user's needs. Additionally, the end-user's local data files had to be transferred over too. It was a lot of detail work and “unsophisticated” end-user hand holding that was required to make it all seem “seamless” to the business's customers which, in my case, were the physicians and patients in a multi-hospital healthcare organization.

Not splash mountain. I rode this ride at Disneyland with two other friends around 15 minutes just before midnight and no one else was on the ride. We completed the ride about 5 min. before midnight and asked the cast member if we could stay on and ride again and he said yes. We saw no other riders and ended up going down the big drop just a few seconds after the fireworks went off. We were the last people to ride this ride just before the Millenium. After we got off the ride we ran to the castle to join the festivities. My disney claim to fame. LOL

My dad took my sister and me to Disneyland for the opening of the Matterhorn mountain. Disney had flown in some Swiss mountain climbers to scale the peak as part of the ceremony. I still remember the submarine ride, the space ship, the autopia and Tom Sawyer's island. It was awesome for an 11 year old. Later on I took my 2 daughters there when the were pre-teens and again with the daughters when their kids were young. That was the last time as it got so expensive we could fly to Europe for less than a weekend stay, and the lines were brutal. PS my favorite still is The Small World.

The Y2K issue was not with the 19-20 transition, it was that memory, in earlier computers days, they only used 2 digits to represent the year (the last 2 digits - the 00-99 part of the year date). Rolling from 1999 to 2000 could have changed the time from 1999 to 1900.
@monorail4252

Yes, just like signing your checks when the year changes from year to year. 2020 was another issues because only using year 20 people could add additional years making it 2024 using a 4 digit year.

It may not be a birth at Disneyland but when my youngest son who is now an adult was only 10 months old. He woke up that morning as we were getting ready to go to the park. He had no sign of any teeth in his mouth. In fact, he was just a mouthful of gums. While we were at Disneyland, and only a few hours later, he was playing in Mickeys toontown when he opened up his mouth and smiled big and there it was he had broken his first tooth through the gums and it was only three hours later then when we were getting ready to go to the park. So my son got his first tooth and his best first souvenir that he could possibly have his first tooth in Disneyland. I may put this story on my KZbin channel, but I wanted to share it with you.

Good to see you doing something other than Pawn Stars! When visiting Disneyland as a young kid, I remember seeing alligators there. There weren't babies either. Before there was a Pirates of the Caribbean, there was a bridge going over what looked like a small river. On the banks of the river, there were a few alligators basking in the sun. One of the alligators walked into the water and swam away. All of this was between the Jungle Cruise and the Rivers Of America. So, I believe that an alligator could have gotten into the Jungle Cruise.

Disneyland is a stage. It's a show. For the same reason that when "Hello Dolly!" is playing in a theater in LA, or OC, or London, the general store scene is not an official part of Yonkers, NY. It's only a set. Tom Sawyer's Island is a set. It's manufactured out of sand and clay made from the soil of the former orange groves, and before, that the alluvial soil from the Santa Ana river floodplain. Oy.

I think that part of it might be due to some special exhibits at places where the exhibition space gets a temporary diplomatic territory designation, which is normally more to help protecting things. So there might be some legal authority with things like some of the exhibits that are sponsored by Egypt where someone robbing it might get Egyptian charges as well as wherever the exhibit physically is being shown.

I was born 6 months after disneyland opened. The only live animals I remember in the park were mules. You could ride a pack mule, plodding along in a line with about 15 other mules. I think it was located in the area where the mine train ride now sits. It was lots of fun but slow loading. Plus the mules only worked, I think, 3 to 4 hours a day in shifts.

Brickey praises all the cast members who help Disneyland run so smoothly (and now might be going on strike to prove their worth). With this weekend's CrowdStrike fiasco (did IT people remember to test this or was it a background push), we got to see what a Y2K collapse *could* have looked like.I was expected by EDS to be available on New Years Day 2000 so I bought a generator just to be sure. Fortunately, my systems were good, so I was able to take the family to watch Fantasia 2000 in full-sized IMAX on its release date.

People often call Y2K a 'scare', and we laugh about it now, but the only reason we can, is because of the millions of coders worldwide who worked their butts off for months to patch the problem. I spent New Years 1999/2000 at Disneyland Paris. The only measure we noticed were that they turned off all elevators at the hotels from 11:50 PM to 12:10 AM, as they didn't want anyone stuck on non-working elevators. They informed us about that when we checked in. Maybe they also stopped the rides around that time, but that I didn't notice, as we were in front of the castle waiting for the countdown and fireworks.

Brickey, To give the "Jungle Cruise" more authentic jungle vegetation, country's would send "specimen" native plant's in the early years. Planted in the "African" section was a "Bushman's Poison," which provided venom for arrow tips of African hunters. Taro Plant's, stable diet of Asia. A sacred Bo Tree of India. A Rubber tree from Malaysia. Some native vegetation from South America. I wonder if those plants are still there? Cheers, Chris Perry.

I've known that Tom Sawyer's Island wasn't part of the State of Misery, 'cause I had so much fun on it in the 60's. And Disney wasn't the only company that worried about Y2K. But most of us computerists knew that it wasn't a big deal. The alligators were just there in anticipation of WDW, where it seems every little pond in Orlando has 'gators in it. Yeah, having them in the Magic Kingdom would be ok, but I used to see them walking to meetings in the drainage ditches when I worked there one or two weeks a year. Eh, I like animals. I have a degree in biology. But yeah, don't need prehistoric creatures that close. Hmm, the opposite of the "nobody dies in Disneyland" rumor. Disney turning an inconvenience into a marketing opportunity. But yeah, people are constantly going to important places (cathedrals, etc.) to have babies, 'cause then they'll be "blessed". Cool stories! Glad the 8888 guy is gone, too.

There were some minor issues with three major programming languages regarding Y2K. Largely what likely would happen would be everything would shut down. In otherwords, the clock would roll over to 1900. Not really a big deal. I was also an IT worker in that time period and, big surprise, the whole thing just turned out to be a big sales pitch by Microsoft to sell computers!

Kinda disappointing that you called Y2K an "urban legend" just because scads of people worked really hard to protect people physically and financially and were successful.

It would be awesome to be able to be able to say that you were born at Disneyland or at Walt Disney World.

Real alligators in the Jungle Cruise sounds more like something you would expect to be a Disney World problem. (unfortunately the emoji [Flag for Florida (US-FL)] isn't supported😭 , if it was I would have put it here.)

It's a good thing Missouri didn't take over Tom Sawyer island. Guests would have to sacrifice some of the freedoms California has to offer if they set foot there.

Yes. And Tom Sawyer Island is clearly in California yet some people today still believe the Missouri Urban Legend. So yeah it doesn’t matter what you tell some folks they are still going to see it the way they want see it was my point. Don’t want you thinking I’m a flat Earther 😂

“Is the world round…” isn’t a good analogy BECAUSE a round Earth has been proven since the Greek era.
@HeyBrickey
@HeyBrickey 4 ай бұрын
It is a good analogy because even though it’s been proven the Earth to be round, yet somehow some people still think it’s flat AND some people still think Tom Sawyer Island is a part of Missouri even though it’s a ridiculous notion and it’s been proven it’s not. Yet there are people that still swear by it not being a part of Disneyland. So the analogy is “it doesn’t matter how much proof you have, some people are going to believe what they want to believe” meaning you can have all the facts in the world, but if your perspective is not to listen to truth and believe what you want, then nobody can change your mind. It’s also meant to be sarcastic which is my mistake because half of the population doesn’t understand sarcasm and is just looking for a fight instead of a laugh.

I will not be surprised if Tiana's Bayou Adventure is "deeded" to the State of Louisiana much like Tom Sawyer Island is "part of " Missouri.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqm1qJZsjLiBjdE >> Timestamp from this video: I wonder is this from opening day of TSI? As that boat is sitting QUITE low... and from what I have seen/heard of that day is that they WAY overloaded the paddleboats and had them almost sink, or was that OPENING DAY opening day (aka when Disneyland actually opened, not just the island)
