The most valuble part on that Chevelle is the cross ram intake. I can't remember ever seeing one for a big block Chevy. Pretty goofy that someone put a double pumper and a vacuum secondary on it. I can't imagine that it ran very well. Probably doesn't even have a proper cam to work with the dual quad. You did well to get rid of the whole car and not mess with parting it out IMO. '64s are just not worth the big bucks.

I had one of those Edelbrock crossram intakes back in the early '70s, except mine was side-by-side, not offset like that. I had thought those offset carbs were original Chevrolet, and the side-by-side carbs Edelbrock aftermarket. I had that intake on a '65 Vette 327 with a '69 4-bolt main later model bottom end & solid lifter cam (remember those?), I think Hooker headers that curved out to meet the factory sidepipes, and in front of 3:08 gears. Between Rantoul, IL & Oil City, PA I could get about 20 MPG @ 80 MPH just cruising. I filled up with $0.19 regular gas a few times during a gas war & then was about empty when arriving home where I would fill up with Sunoco 260 for the weekend.

you are correct about the bbc 402 engine being factory bored 396 and Chevy did that and called them the 400 big block for passenger cars and trucks
@peteloomis845611 ай бұрын
GM did this because of the emissions standards and if the engine was less than 400 cubes it had to have catalytic converters and emissions charcoal canisters and leaner tuned carburetor and timing set back on them to detune for emissions and GM figured out that if they took the 396 which was actually closer to 402 in cubes and called it a 402 like some trucks were badged they were able to sell them without the emissions on them and skate by the emissions crap .
@savagenomore11 ай бұрын
@peteloomis8456 I'm not aware of any truck ever having a 402 badge, if they had the 402 engine the badge said 400, if you know of any please show me. I'm not saying they never did just saying I've never seen it but we learn new stuff all the time.

A bit of history Silas. This what I've read as a classic car buff. When Chevrolet installed the 396 big block into the 201 65 Chevelles as part of the Z16 Package, only one was a convertible. Many Bowtie fans consider it the Holy Grail of all the Chevys produced. The lone Z16 convertible was said to have been obtained by a top GM executive shortly after it was built. Unlike it's two door brothers, the convertible was never seen in public and it's whereabouts are not known to this day.
@tomhowe1510 Жыл бұрын
These z16s only came with the rarest L78 375 HP 396 made. 11 to 1 forged, square port heads, AND with the only 375 HP hydraulic cam that GM ever made. EVERY other 1965 396 was rated at 425 HP solid lifter. 1966 thru 70, they advertised L78 at 375 hp solid lifter, rated at a lower RPM, even tho it was exactly the same as the 425HP. Also the rare 1 year narrowed 12 bolt.

I restored a 64 SS Malibu back in the mid 80s, I bought it for $800. It was an original factory 327 with four speed floor shifter and factory in dash air not under dash. It was originally a white car with blue interior but I painted it red and put white interior in it. I had about $5k into it when I was done as the motor and tranny were good just needed interior redone, all paint and body some minor body work, all new rubber, complete front end rebuild and glass felts etc. It was pretty sweet when I was done but I ended up selling it for $3500 like a dummy. They didn't put big blocks in the Chevelle in 1964.

My grandfather on my mother's side had a general store and livestock auction business in Ivy, Iowa. He also sold Model T Fords, at least until the Ford reps found out he was trading livestock for Fords. He thenceforth sold Chevrolets. He always said that if what you're selling doesn't sell, RAISE THE PRICE. Apparently you aren't the first one to experience this phenomenon! Oh, and a sure fire way to not buy anything at a swap meet?? Don't bring a pocket full of cash!
