I bought this game the day it came out two years ago. It took me two tries, two hours both times, but I finally managed to beat it. I had so been hoping to find the true Secret of Monkey Island and here it is: a pirate theme park.

There's a huge problem from the very beginning: on Monkey Island 2, when little Guybrush and little LeChuck walk out of the underground tunnel, the couple ask them where they'd been and tell the boys they were worried because they were their parents. On this game, the couple acts as if they didn't know the boys at all.

@@CollapsingRealities I think you’re missing the entire point of the start. The two events are different distinct events that happened like 20-30 years apart, it’s a story telling device called mirroring in order to highlight an unreliable narrator, and Gilbert did a terrible job with Return.

@Bloodshade They're not different events; Return to Monkey Island is supposed to start right where LeChuck's Revenge ended. That ending can't be modified in spite of the time that has passed between the development of one game and another. It's a story and a key link is missing.

@CollapsingRealities they’re different events because it’s Boybrush replaying the events that Guybrush had told him before. The actual secret is that Guybrush got lost in the Pirates ride at an amusement park as a child, created a fictional story in his head about the experience, and decades later he returned and his son decided to experience the end of Guybrush’s story of being lost by trying to recreate it. Guybrush went on to create an attraction (at some point) based on the story he had created, and that’s what he’s been doing for the last few years/decades.

@Bloodshade Yours is an interpretation with which I disagree. After almost thirty years, I expected the third Monkey Island game to begin where the previous one ended because it's a story and it shouldn't contradict itself.

@ it’s the interpretation that lines up with the evidence provided in the game though, the original "Secret" was that Guybrush was in a theme park all a long. There's a plaque on the wall stating this. You’re saying there’s a huge problem in your interpretation because you’re assuming MI2 ends with Boybrush, but Gilbert never even stated an intent for a son to be a plot device back then - and he’s even on record saying he wanted to explore having Elaine be the protagonist. He got lost, stumbled into the back side of the pirate ride, invented a story while there. 1 and 2 both clue in they take place in childhood just based on what he says throughout the games, but in Return he’s clearly an adult. Therefore, the end of 2 couldn’t have been the same event as the start of Return, and that’s even reflected in the different deliveries of the lines

i think the ending of it showing the pasting of age to a new gen of adventurers, from the look of things this take place of that ending the end of the American Civil War before the FDA and all that was made and seeing they have Ferris Wheel in the background its the late 1890s, so ww1 is coming real soon.

I bought that game on iPad Pro 12,9 M2 in September 2023. I had no time to play it at this time ,now I have time and they want 9,99€ again . This happens always when I want enter the jungle on monkey island. Please fix that ,I don’t pay twice !

Thanks for uploading this! If I had bought the game, I would have been so disappointed. I appreciate the work that must have gone into this, and I do kind of like the idea of Guybrush being a dad, but it seems to have copied all the wrong bits of the original and left a weird, bitter aftertaste. I guess we should just be glad we got the first three games, and try not to raise up any more tired, twisted ghosts.

I really don't get why people are shitting on the art style so much. I think it has a lot of charm, and it'll certainly age quite a lot better than the 3d graphics. Plus, Monkey Island had so many different styles already, practically every game had a new one, why is it such a bother this time?

You know whats funny? This is supposed to be a closure for Gilbert, not for the players. He couldnt take away Elaines and Guybrushes marriage because people would hate that, but he did retcon monkey island 4 by not having herman toothrot be elaines granddad. So a little correction was made. Also I dont get why people shit on the divers representation here. Monkey island DID IT FIRST. You had an unquestioned female govenor, an unquestioned female swordmaster and loads of other strong characters. The voodoo lady is black too, but no one says she was added for diversity. Thats because she wasnt. None of them were. MI was ahead of its time and now that time has caught up, youre complaining. And dont tell me about realism and shit. Guybrush wouldve been abducted to become a lifelong swabbie in MI 1 if MI was "realistic".

guybrushed sounded the same, elaine sounded different, why does guybrush look sad and droopy not sleek, with a face of lack of motivation. where is THE stan, used ship dealer? austrailian corporation killer is here too, but sounded bad, and without his cane, the voodoo master should have had more makeup.
