Broken does that too, and Cheated actively tries to stop Contrarian from throwing it. Skeptic would probably lambast everyone for making things harder to plan and also sit in the corner while telling them to get him when they're ready to take this seriously

I love Broken. I love him so much. My buddy was did *dirty* in the old version. The Pristine Cut fleshed him out *so* much. He's easily my favorite voice now. What was once a nuisance at best and an enemy at worst is now an empathetic, world-wise individual. From the very beginning of this route, he's already empathizing with Fury. Acknowledging how much they've both hurt each other and fully submitting himself to all this torture. And why? So he can further understand Fury's plight. That's it. That's the reason. It's as simple as that, and it manages to resolve three timelines of violence. "I feel... small. Smaller than before." "But something is happening now. Something in us is liquifying. Something that started small, but keeps getting bigger." Broken as he may be, he's holding his psyche together so he can understand just why Fury's doing this. To make us feel what she felt. And he does just that without any resistance. She's in pain, and whatever Broken can't personally understand about that, he *wants* to. And he'll make sure he does. "Fighting the pain is just the same as wallowing in it. This doesn't have to be something where you win or lose. We just have to accept it. Listen to it." "You're right about one thing. It is torture. But it isn't pointless. The whole point is that it's torture." And he does that in a capacity that no one else could've been capable of. "It's okay to let go." "I'm going to stick around as long as you need me to." "It's okay. We're almost there." And he extends that experience and understanding to *everyone.* Whether that be the other voices who cant hold themselves together, the lost princess whos been taken apart so many times she doesn't know how to put herself back together, the narrator resigned to his and everyone else's fate, or, in the end... "So the world's gone, and she's gone with it. There's only one thing left for you to do here. You need to look at yourself. Whatever you see, it's going to be okay." ...even us, exhausted and traumatized. Even when in any other situation, he'd be one of the most panicked in front of that mirror. He knows that what we need is gentle, grounded comfort. And also special mention to; "I'm tired." "I know." which sent shivers down my spine.

He was also already like that in Wild. And he's like that in Cage too. Plus he's completely different if you get to Fury from Tower in that he's the first to go. He's realised the god he worshipped likely no longer exists, and because of that, he no longer has a purpose.

@reubensalter8125 and then there's Apotheosis' Paranoid route, where even his last stand against her is a display of his empathetic prowess. He doesn't wanna kill her, he wants *her* to understand how she made *him* feel. And he does it flawlessly.

Contrarian giving up while the narrator is counting up is so funny to me. Nothing has even happened, aside from the obvious organ unwinding that he doesn’t care about, the torture hasn’t really begun. He just gets bored and peaces out

@@CowMalicious9479 Tbf had he continued I think he'd would've not only tolerated it, but really enjoyed it, because even though it's painful, at least it's something. He'd probably remain uplifting through to the end and change all our explore options to more (possibly) sarcastic ones.

@@reubensalter8125 Maybe. Though, in Apotheosis it makes me feel like he probably wouldn't handle it too well. When we started getting torn and were in great pain, despite his curiosity and excitement to see what was on the other side, he couldn't handle the pain and wanted us to stop her. Sure, he still made a few more funny comments that made me laugh like, "My only comfort is that He's not here to watch us suffer. He would love that, wouldn't he?" So he'd definitely make the explore options more sarcastic and stuff like that. But Cold and Broken were able to handle it for a reason. Cold wasn't broken by the torture because he's unfeeling, and Broken could handle it because he was already, well, broken! Unfortunately, Contrarian doesn't have a good reason like that to be able to handle it, and I don't think curiosity would help him pull through. But that's just my little analysis of it. I could be wrong and you're free to perceive (Hehe) the situation however you like. Btw I very often see you in Slay the Princess comment sections. It's nice to finally talk to you! :D

It's really fascinating to me that the two routes where she lays slumped down occur when you have the voice of Broken or the Cold with you, almost as though that voice somehow infected her during that process. This route is definitely the most brutal, but it's also the most 'passionate' in that this is the route where the Princess is the most desperate to 'be with you' to some degree. The Fury is the result of her craving this connection with you that she realizes she won't get anymore because we're either too broken from what she did, or we're too cold; bored of her and desiring something else that she can't give. Extremely interesting look into a failing relationship.

@@LucasImpulse I think the defiant spark only applies to Tower, hence why Broken leaves early during that version. Here, we're either enduring it together in an attempt to find meaning through pain, or she's trying to find our courage, which ironically but unsurprisingly left out of boredom. 😂

Okay, Cold is such a badass, outclassing Contrarian, Hero, and Stubborn, and he isn’t nearly as affected as Broken is. The fact that LQ can affect the princess, the construct and themself with just their thoughts… Cold being able to detach from everything prevents you from being too connected to your body when it’s being torn to shreds. And he just does not care at all. “Do I still have to answer that?” What a badass.

I dunno, the fact that Contrarion decides to ignore logic and keep moving when we no longer have muscles, and even manages to push forward a final attack After BEING UNWOUND OUT OF EXISTENCE ENTIRELY, is pretty badass.

I don't necessarily hate the Narrator, but I love how petty Cold usually acts towards him, specially in the leave with Fury ending. In most routes, even if you have gone through the most painful, traumatizing shit, Narrator keeps droning on about us needing to slay the Princess no matter the costs unless we're too physically unable to do so. Here tho, Narrator gets a taste of his own bullshit, with Cold not giving two fucks about his well-being and making him go on till the very end because by all means, he's still on the clock. Better hop to it.

Other ways to get Broken: Go back upstairs for the blade or flee and then fight her unarmed. Turn to leave (blade or no blade) then die, fail to outrun her (if you talked her into breaking out of her chains) or choose "Okay team, what we thinking?" Fight her with blade then attempt to flee.

The fascinating thing about this route is just how similar the Cold and the Broken are despite coming from two completely different directions, somehow both coming around to empathize with the Fury and not just seeing what she's doing but why. Though I appreciate how the Broken very early sees buried pain in the violence early, and spends the route propping the Player up as much for her sake as the Player's.

Cold is more apathetic than empathetic but that's his real strength here. Plus he's still propping us up but is doing it out of sheer indifference. And he also sees the pain early too but only because we explicitly incited it as opposed to it being implied, like with leaving her. And on top of that, he outright says he likes her when we see her, which is hilarious 😂, but also helps us under his motivation.

9:27 Stubborn puts up a good point. When has the Princess provably lied? Most of the time she's actually pretty honest. The only time i can think of her lying is The Razor, and the two chapters after it, she's honest, if not a bit sarcastic

Plus he calls Razor's transformation "painful". And if you leave the Princess behind in Dragon he responds with a slight solemn "Nothing."
