He’s right. I learned this lesson to when I moved across the country to pursue a dream of mine. People don’t talk about this because of our capitalistic society but sometimes, knowing when to quit will save you because it will allow you to be open to other options. I decided to move back to my hometown and pivot a bit. I got some gigs in the same sort of field, but a different position per say. Ended up being much better for my mental health and I could live better! And without the pivot I wouldn’t have known that I could be happy doing this other thing!

I think the first thing to look for in the three year rule is if it still makes you happy after all that time. What I've learned through my own journey is that failure will be your companion far more often than success or any kind of deal. If you have the grit to stick it through the failures, you still like what you're doing, even on the days you feel like a potato trying to talent, and at the end of the day it makes you happy and feel fulfilled even if you don't get paid a single cent, that's what matters. Oh for sure getting a big shiny YES, a following and making money helps, but if that's all you're chasing, you will burn out so quickly.

You helped me! I'm starting my journey to being a yoga instructor. Before this, I struggled to be an actor for a very long time. Like what you said, it was my dream for a very long time and it tangled up with my identity. That's why when something didn't go as I expected, it hurt to the core. How I see my yoga teaching career now is Yeah, it somehow sucks but I know I'm on my way to becoming a better teacher and more willing to learn and try out new methods.

Its such a funny coincidence that certain things come to you at a time in your life when you need to hear it and this video has come at one such time for me. I'm picking up Spanish as a business language so that I can open up more opportunities for myself and I have just started with my classes. Learning something new, something you have no context in is always so sucky in the start. So this was really helpful because I do have a concrete measure of success (giving international language exam) and if I apply whatever I have learnt from this video, then I know when I need to call it quits as opposed to doing it earlier on, like I have w many of my hobbies. This is a great video, thank you 💖 One thing I want to contribute to the idea of the 3-year rule is this: I got started with my astrology/tarot business in late 2017 and early 2018. That’s about 3.5 years, but it’s also been hampered by my struggle in undergrad. It’s slowed down my progress by a lot, but I am still receiving feedback that tells me that this is 100% worth pursuing even tho I have barely made an income from it beyond it being, like, a hobby. So for anybody who has other things going on in life that make it a little more difficult to tell after 3 years if you should quit... consider the external factors as well. If you’re working full time and exhausted, this isn’t a personal failing or a sign that you’re not good enough at your craft. 💖💖💖

You speak the truth and it totally resonates. I had an identity crisis last year after failing to make a career out of writing, at least as quickly as I felt I needed to. My identity was tied to being a good writer, and it was really shitty to get rejections and be underpaid on work that I didn’t feel passionate about. But then this year, I’ve started drawing. Which I’m not passionate about, but I’m “okay” at it. I’m designing stationary and stickers and selling them on Etsy. I’m posting about it on Instagram. It’s weird, because I never thought I would be a visual artist, I always knew I would be a writer, but because I’m not to tied to it, like you said I don’t feel the same pressure to be perfect or a certain style or whatever. I experiment and make mediocre stuff and don’t feel shitty when I do it, I feel proud of the “just okay” art that I make. And I’m actually starting to sell stuff and get positive reviews from strangers! Not a lot, but it’s happened, so I’m gonna give it the three years and see how far I get toward my idea of success (making a living wage on my art, selling things everyday, and still having free time). You’re great at these videos by the way, keep it up 💗

This was great. I started out in music too and i thought it was interesting that you said it was part of your identity which made it more difficult. Also there is the extra complications to work with people and deal with getting recording and production to sound right. Music is hard to be successful at. I've been an artist and pretty much dropped the music thing since, although i still think someday i will have time to make videos for the good songs - but its been so long, i figure no one will care. (But it's my legacy!) Now im worried noone cares about my art but I've switched it up a lot with subject matter and mediums and got confused between art and graphic design and which i want to do when. I am still trying to figure out how to get followers on social media and people to BUY art. You are way ahead of me on that. Great video - totally relateable. I also like "get your bad art out of the way so you can get to your good art"

Sometimes when you're good at something, there are still times when you suck at that same something. I'm a film composer, and I have to write what makes the director happy. And sometimes, I think the work I'm doing is awful, and I think I don't even have the right to call myself a composer. But other times, my work is really good and people compare to me to some of the greatest composers of our time (honestly, I really have no idea what I'm doing when I'm writing, I'm just hoping what I come up with is sorta okay). Becoming good at something is a windy, squiggly path of doing well and doing terribly.

When you are passionate and enjoy something so much it’s no chore no challenge to get good at it, I’m entirely self taught in music I’m naturally talented at it. The part where you failed was you were trying to create something for others or the radio. If you just loved making music and you made it for yourself you wouldn’t realise yourself getting better , also I work a day job to fund my music creation , wether I suck or not is up to nobody when art is subjective , I don’t want to make money nor have a career in music as it’s my pure love and joy and will never not be something I do , it’s as natural as breathing for me . Key is do something you love regardless of what others think or what you will gain.

Mmhmm, except if you DO entertain any notions of going pro at some point, you have to take that bull by the horns because it's basically an entire skill in it's own right. If you don't, what ends up happening is you turn into one of those old guys who you meet at open mic nights and bars who bore you to death about their self proclaimed glory days that never happened. If you truly just do it for your own amusement this is irrelevant of course.
