@@kookiethebear ok, I get it, but he obviously packed nightclubs and had respect of many in the business. What I don’t get is John Wayne? Yes, he is big and has a presence, but except for TrueGrit (which even had few moments) I don’t see his acting prowess; not even close to Brando, DiNero, or even Eastwood. Look at his early films, he just reads lines.

@@wayneriley7367 John Wayne is as important as baseball , hotdogs and Chevrolet to coin a phrase. You are correct he was no Brando or Gable but what he was to the vast majority of movie gowers was a larger than life representation of an American - didn't cheat , lie , steal .....etc . A true American hero of his day especially in the eyes of kids . Those others were better actors but he was the bigger star. And Don Rickles kicks comedy ass , the king of the one liner.

@@adrianotero7963 In school we learn who invented the phone but we don't normally learn who did the "Who's on First" joke. Most people probably wont know who invented the first bifocal lens. Doubt many younger people today even know John Wayne but I'm sure they know Clint Eastwood. There are plenty of new music stars that people bring up and I'm like "nope never heard them". I'm still amazed that Groups like Pink Floyd still sell shirts but, how many of those people wearing them could name more than 2 songs. Its a shame how much is lost over time. Nice to see that the internet at least has some hope to keep them around a bit longer.

My mother worked at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs at the drycleaners service counter there. Many celebrities stayed there when they were in town. One day, my mom brings me to work and has me sit in the lobby,I had no clue why. Next thing I know, she comes walking around a corner with,John Wayne, beside her. I had at 10 years old never seen a man that big in my life at that point. I had seen his movies and was a total fan,I couldn't believe who I was actually seeing. He comes up and stands in front of me and extends his hand, and we shake. I had never seen a mans hand that big,at 10,He was so much bigger in real life than anyone I had seen. He says, "How are you doing, young man,I hear you like Westerners,is that so?" I just stared at him wide-eyed and smiling and said,"You're John Wayne, you're the Duke,Mom,is he really John Wayne,Mom,it's the Duke!" He sat down and we talked,he asked me what movie of his I liked the most,I said "All of them sir, every one of them, sir". He laughed and got up and he shook my hand again and said"You're a good kid,I have to go,you have a nice day,and it was nice to meet you, young man". I said "Thank you sir,I'm having the best day of my life, you take care too sir!" And that was the best day of my life at 10,let me tell you,I shook the hand of the Duke, and he liked me!

What, exactly, is it about Wayne that makes him so great? He was an actor. Whatever was seen on screen was make believe. That was not the real person. I can never figure out how it is so many take what they see on the screen and come to believe they are seeing something real. I just don't understand how anyone could be that ignorant. 06:34 - Rickles asks 'Wayne', "Is your dog here?" Years before developing the 'John Wayne' persona, young Marion Morrison liked to hang around the fire station at Montrose, California. The firemen liked the kid who always had with him a dog named 'Duke' and that's how he got the nickname which stuck with him for life. I have my grandmother's 1924 Glendale High School annual which is signed 'Jack Wayne' and 'John Wayne' over the Marion Morrison captions. There were a few photos of him in it as he was Captain of the football team and on the drama squad.

Fun video, I had the pleasure of meeting "The Duke" when I was 16 years old. When I knocked on his door, he answered and he said in that voice "Well you know who I am who are you?" I was there to help set up a party his family was having. When I was done his wife gave me a crisp one hundred dollar bill. What a memory.

I was sad when John Wayne had died. I think if anyone could pick the exact time of your death he nailed it perfectly. He didn't get old enough to see him breaking down. It was still easy enough to remember who he really was. I hope that makes a little sense to some people. When I saw what happened with Kirk Douglas and Burt Reynolds that was just very sad. That dragged on for many many years. You never want to see someone pass on. I just think John Wayne nailed his last role in life right on the mark. Even in his very last movie about him dying he was still John Wayne.

Even today 50 years later I'm grinning and blushing, Wayne was such a HUGE star, so talented and charismatic. Typical the twatfer mafia is after him, because off the cuff humor has no context today. He was an amazing talent and huge heart of gold for everyone who knew and worked with him. Searchers, Sands of Iwo Jima, Red River, dozens more huge pictures, he's so damn good, they truly don't make stars like him, what a man... Rickles loves him, you can tell, I've never seen Rickles so nice to anyone, that's his act but out of deference he takes it easy, also John had been sick extended, surgeries and wasn't in best health anymore. God i loved him as a kid. He represents everything right with us.
